  • replace the guides, chain and cam chain tensioner

  • I deff know that noise, timing chain guide, been there done that, not too bad, not too fun really either.

  • @cliffd66

That was it alright, a broken guide all fixed now

  • I had the same thing on my 84 22r timing chain guards were chewed by the chain...

time for a tune up baby.

  • YO!! sometimes when you tighten the valve cover down to much, it amps. the valve noise. and that is what I would check,,, the valves. The exhaust should be at0.012 and intake at 0.008. good luck

  • Check piston and rings

  • Timing chain guides are plastic and the weak point upgrade if you can to LC Engineering's Dual row chain kit they have not only stouter chains but guides to. Also don't forget to put mellings Timing chain/valve assembly lube and zinc additive to your oil or it'll gauld

  • I wish people who do not know what they are talking about would quit commenting.

This video is 2 years old.

It was an obvious timing chain problem, these engines will run quite some time with the chain slapping but it will eventually either jump time or the chain will break and bend a valve.

If driven for a very long time the chain can eat through the backside of the water pump and dump all the coolant into the engine oil = wiped bearings and overheated engine.

  • @MrHurricaneFloyd True that, same thing happened to me. BUT most of the noise from a timeing chain is made on start up. very noticable......

  • Yeah its your timing belt, its broke the guides, youll probably need to get a new timing cover eventually the chain will either break or wear into the water jacket

  • your shit is fucked...

  • @xgamesboss

Thnx for the comment ,it realy helps

  • @DISRUPTOR40 That's a hilarious response. You have a great sense of humor! Did you ever find out what was wrong with the engine? Thanks. sincerely, JAMES.

  • toyotaminis . com

  • go here, they have lots of technical advice!!

    i am " 22r _ all _ motor! " on the forum...

  • THE POSITION OF THE TIMING COVER BOLTS REALLY MATTER!! just my .02 cents, go here, they have lots of technical advice!!

  • when you replace the timing chain also check to make sure that the oil is getting to the tensioner cause your oil pressure keeps the chain tight that was the problem with my timing chain going bad

  • Pretty nice comment.. this really hurts me , i just want to be friendly with people and have answers to my problem with my truck, still have a nice day my friend

  • @sarzamineiran

you wont come here insulting me , if you dont like the video dont watch it and go elsewhere

  • Respond to this video... rod bearings are out

  • timing chain guides were , now fixed thnk you

  • @DISRUPTOR40

Thanks for the update. I feel like people always hear a 22R or RE and go 'rod knock' when it's just that valve noise they all have. Everyone who knows these motors knows how they sound, and besides It's half as fast as it would be if it was rod knock, but people are always chiming in and saying 'rod knock' anyway.

You get the steel backed guides?

  • sound like timing chain

  • i just got me the whole timing chain kit from lcengineering, with the metal guides, i could got the dual row conversion

  • i iam replacing min on my 92 right noe. that is without a doubt a timing chain. address before chain eats through the case into the cooling passage and your motor oil turns brown. it probably has an abnormaly loud, clunky, hard start where all the slack is on the drivers side of the chain until it picks up enough rpms to slack out.

  • broken guides or tensioner is work out and fully compressed. had this problem with my 85 celica gts

  • check timing chain and the guide on the top right hand side. hey that rhymes:)

  • hey bro, this is your timing chain slapping around against the timing chain cover. i had this problem and i had to fix it. fix it before the chain breaks. also, the slapping chain will bore a hole on the an internal water jacket, then you will start losing coolant for no aparent reason. it's going to your oil. don't over heat that engine. they're good engines. have that chain and tensioner, ghides sprokets etc replaced, any questions LET ME know

  • all of the ttr/re devolope spots on the valve seates with over time make it impossible to adjust the tick out. it dose not effect the power of the truck or if it dose a unnoticeble amount

  • yep its the timing chain

  • Make sure to check ur valve guides mine was making that same noise and it had to guides broken and a really bad timing cover and some of the valves were bent dont skimp out cus itll screw you over in the long run

  • Ya def. the timing chain. Mine was doing the same then I bought a new chain and 6 hours of work and it ran like a dream

  • I just finished replacing the timing chain on my 84 22r. Made the exact same noise and when i pulled the timing cover off, found the right (straight) guide was broken . Caught it early enough that it didnt wear into anything, but there are obvious rub marks. If you have this noise, replace the chain right away.

  • That's what I have heard the timing chain...I have a 88 22re and its starting to get water in the oil...is it because of the worn timming cap or it it over something else???thinking about ordering a kit with new chain and cover...

  • its because you wore a hole in your block by not replacing the chain and now coolant and oil are mixing

  • the only one thats right is dirtman2609 the rest of you stop faking, it you dont know, its okay

  • swap a 1jz

  • tensioner is gone and chain its wearing into your water pump if it wears tru you got to pull your motor and replace rod and main bearings... hidden bolt is located under distributor gear

  • You need to get the timing chain and guides and tensioner replaced if you don't the chain will wear a hole in the timing cover and you'll have to get another timing cover if you do it your self there is a 10 mm bolt in the head the has to be removed in wich in tales you to take the valve cover off and remove that 10mm bolt out of the head it's in the front of the head it will be covered with oil then you can take the rest apart

  • @dirtman2609 this guy knows what hes talking about

  • timing chain , guides , tensioner .

  • Timing chain, carefull you drive it to long like that. If the belt is too loose it can wear a hole in the block, then you will need to get it aluminum welded.

  • How many miles, what kind of oil, oil filter, how many oil changes a year etc?

  • yeah timing chain guide is worn, dude sorry my first was bad.i have same engine.like them but not i much power, for off roading u have to go just 4 low!!

  • EXHAUST MANIFOLD is done, that gasket, that is it!!

  • demolishionc4 yo what happen how did you know the engine went bad the same thing happen to mine water went into the oil but i fix all of it got the new chain, guides, and cover but it starts fine has a good idel but when i take off no power and the exhaust gets cherry red i cant figure out what's going on the cadalic converter is not plugged ether thanks any help please i been out of work for 3 week im about to give up

  • ya my buddy just had that problem he went n got a new timing i recomend gatting the set with all metal parst instead of plastic they may make a bit of more noise but they last a lot longer its worth the extra money. if u take care of these engines thwy WILL NOT die.

  • Hi guys!! I need a little advice here too.. I was removing my thermostat and one of the bolts broke and got stuck in there. My question is.. Is the lower thermostat housing, part of the block or is it a separate part? (i just gave up trying to remove that broken bolt) Thank you!!

  • yes timing chain, been through this, get a cheap kit off ebay for a 100 bucks, go to the autoparts store and get a new water pump and oil pump, 6 hours later your 22re will be in yota heaven!

  • yep timing chain guide is broke and chain is slapping timing cover. I recommend buying the steel guides off internet and replace everything. I dont think you need to replace your oil pump, i didnt and it works fine.

  • thats your timing chain get that done soon or it will ruine your motor will cost a couple of hundred bucks plus while your at it have your vales lapped to save having to get it done again

  • what do you consider a "real truck'??

  • yea replace the timing chain guide quick, mine did that and i didnt pay any attention to it and the dam chain cut through the cover into the water pump and ruined the engine..

  • is this a pickup?

  • Yes Xtend cab 4X4 1992 and it was the timing chain slapping on the cover due to broken guides

  • thanks man, mine 1984 22r carb. has the same sound except it goes off and on, but it is starting to be more constant, I am gonna have a mech. change the timing chain etc. before it brakes my block , I figure I could get in there and mess with no problem but if I mess somthing than no mechanic is gonna wanna jump in and help so I rather hire somedody. I hope this is the only thing wrong.

  • Did that guy say rod bearing? That is a t chain slappin the cover

  • definitely a tcahin.

i did mine myself, was a fun experience

  • That is the timing chain. These older 22RE motors had plastic timing chain guides that would wear out over time and start rattleing against the side of the timing cover. If left to do this very long, it can eat through the timing cover into a coolant passage that runs through the timing cover.

  • This is a great piece of advice. But, if not the the timing tensioner, then it could be a valve or rod bearing

  • I'd pull the valve cover and take a look. its not that hard to do. If you have a metric ratchet tool kit and few other things, its not that hard.. considering the valve cover is only held up by 12mm nuts and stuff.

  • its a rod bearing

  • I had one chevy once... thats why i have a Toyota now.......:)

  • i second that! ; )

  • they don't understand the only weak point of the 22RE is just the timing chain guide. the guides last about 80k miles, around there give or take 10k, if you consider that "Weak".

Go back to 1994, 145lb ft in a inline four was definitely quite a bit... especially with 2valves per cylinder and a SOHC.

  • 145lb ft in an inline four is still great coinsidering its only an 8 valve! everyone nowdays trys to compare it to there dohc engines which isnt even fair comparing a 2 v per cylinder engine to a 4-8 v per cylinder.... total alples and oranges your so right...

  • Bingo. 145lb in a inline four is considered alot back in 1993.

  • @DISRUPTOR40 thats right!

  • @airborneman5 why would he want to buy a pile of shit?

  • my '91 pickup did the same noise when idling. it was my timing chain slapping around so i think its the same problem you got going.. its a simple yet difficult job but it can be done in your own garage if you have tools and are familar with the engine. all thats needs to be replaced are- timing chain, chain guides(check for original broken plastic guides in the oil pan), the chain tensioner, and all gaskets and seals need to be replaced.

  • check ur valves and timing chain

  • valve adjustment is what I would say, and if your valves are fine then maybe your head is bad or just valve train is noisy, and for the mechanic 5 degrees retarded would be seen after car is put into base timing and you would see the harmonic balencer at 5 degrees, if not in base timing you reading are squed to what the computer decides is best timing for current conditions.

  • It was timing chain guide broken thats all, nothing more ,its all fixed now and works great , but thanx for reply and suggestions

  • @DISRUPTOR40

plastic guides ehh thats why alot of people make or find aluminum ones stay ontop of changing the plastic ones then u never really have a problem and easy enough to change

  • Chain+guides+lifters+valves+get started....

  • fuck dude that shit sounds like your timing chain..

  • i have the same problem right now check your main bearing

  • bro do the lifters as they sound worn then after that you can idjust the deszy for the elictrec timing AND MAKE SHORE THAT THE SPARK PLUGS R THE RIGHT TYPE

    GOOD LUCK...

  • You need a match several match stick and a gallon of petrol.

    Procedure:

    1. Pour all the petrol out of the container over the noisy engine.

    2. Keep a distance from the engine.

    3. Light the match stick.

    4. If match stick went out repeat step 3.

    5.If match stick is lit.

6.Throw the match stick into the engine.

    VIOLA... problem solved.

    Waaaaaaaaaaaah... ha ha ha ha...

  • its definitely that guides the same shit happened to mine

  • great! now i know whats wrong with mine! its the timing chain! mine does that too! does that mean i have to replace the timing chain or else bad news? how easy is it to replace the timing chain?

  • Read all the comments below ,should answer all your questions, and by the way i bought a timing chain kit at Rock Auto com for about 50 $ but i had it installed by a mech. Its a pretty big job if you dont know where your going. Its also the perfect time to put a new water pump ( for about 25$)

  • sounds like your tension er is taking a shit its easy to replace.

  • TC... Do it...

  • as far bottom end taking boost i've heard of people pushing around the low twenties.

I've got the 22rte, bottom end is the same but different pistons, head volume is smaller. lower compression motor 7.3:1, where yours is like 9.5:1

i swapped to a CT26 turbo and push 10psi of boost right now.

  • did not understand NOTHING you said but thx for the reply

  • Put new metal guides in, also when you change the chain and guides take off the oil pan. You will find pieces of your guides broken in small pieces and blocking your pickup screen on your pickup tube. Low oil press = no good.

  • that's definitely your timing chain....what you're hearing is the chain slappin on the guides.....

  • Yeah , i got it fixed , actually it was the chain slapping in the timing cover, it was half way through it after 2 years of letting it go .

    Thx for the comment

  • dose anyone know what the valve lash is on these motors and how much boost can they hold on a stock bottom end

  • it's amazing how much abuse that little motor can take and still run!

  • That is the timing chain going bad, it stretches after a while and the guides wear down.

  • yea...timing chain.. mine did the same thing!

  • that sound like your timing chain tensoner has gone bad or the guides. my 92 just did the same thing, same noise and it was a broken guide and a bad tensoner. this caused chain lag which it was rubbin against the timing chain cover makin that rattling noise. not a very hard procedure just remember when you put it back together your timing mark for distributer is 5 degrees retarded

  • that was it, a broken guide , i rode it like that for almost 2 years . The chain was half way into the timing cover. Its a verry big job for me , but all went well

  • I'm a professional mechanic and am building one of these engines right now. I was wondering what you meant by the timing mark being 5 degrees retarded? Do you mean the ignition timing should be set at 5 degrees?(as per manual) or is the timing mark on the cover at the crank 5 degrees out? or is it something else?

  • Timing thats all it was , runs great now

  • my guess is that it would most likely be the valves tapping... i just fixed mine because it was doing the same thing.. i would rev it up and it would sound fine but at idle i could hear it. it is also possible that it could be the timing chain...

  • no theres no camshaft bearings on these motors. i was talkin main and rod bearings. ud know if they were bad, it would me knockin all the time, worse under load. if u think its just valve noise thats normal for them. just make sure they've been set to right clearance and checked after running the engine.

  • Just had my Timing chain kit installed with new water pump, but now whenever i put the truck under good acceleration and especially if i am a little under the speed for a higher gear, i get that knocking or some sort of valve noise , which wouldnt happen withe the older chain ??? If anyone knows what could be the prob. Note that when im reving the engine in neutral at high Rpm it sounds perfect .

  • dude how r ur bearings after that? my guides went out on the freeway just b4 i got home n i drove it home (stupid) and lost oil pressure n it died. so im just finishing up rebuilding the whole thing n had to turn the crank. LC Engineering is a good company to get OE and performance parts from, including the metal backed guides kit. hehe. little pricey tho. good luck.

  • Do you mean camshaft bearings ? im no expert , got all my timing chain kit and WP done by a mechanic.I still went with the plastic guides , i figured the original ones went for 235 000Km , should be good for another 200. The only thong now is when i put some tork or hard acceleration , the engine clicks or does some sort of valve noise, especially when in higher gear at slow speed . Any Ideas ? Never did it with the old chain in it ??

Btw got all my parts at Rock Auto, was very satisfied.

  • Should have went to placentia auto supply. Any way sounds like your timming is off I think the sound you are hearing is pinging when you use 87 octane (crap)gas or The timming is to far advanced so under load you hear that noise.

  • UPDATE. Thx for all the comments , it was very helpfull , i had a full timing chain kit install 2 days ago and a new water pump, and all is well now with no more slapping noise. I rode my truck like what you eared on the video for 2 full years and the mechanic told me the chain cover was 50% worn in. These covers are pretty tough but im glad i had it done before going through it. Once again thx for the help

  • definately a timing chain issue.. be carefull, or it will wear through the front cover and fill your crank case with antifreeze.. if it already has i may have one for you to buy

  • timing chain, be carful or you'll wear a hole in the timing cover.

  • I drove mine for 2 years like that. It's fixed now.

  • 22RE can't get metal t-chain guides unless they are custom. Broken guides cause chain to separate from Cam gear on the way around and smack the inside of the timing cover, opposite to water journal. Eventually, soon, it wears through and coolant mixed with your oil and you'll end up with brown goo everywhere, including intake; and coat your cooling system with oily coolant. Also tappets could be adjusted, or lash, .008in .012ex. You may never get the valves quiet, some 22REs clatter forever.

  • Go to LC engineering or DOA Toyota. LC has anything you want.T-chain kits w/metal guides $199-up.

  • dude u need to get ur facts right, manufacture has metal backed guides its nothing custom. they've had that as the fix for this problem forever.

  • Sounds like alittle valve rattle to me try enigne cleaner in it OR check timing.

  • oh ya ive built many of the wonderful 22re's get a new timing chain with METAL guides not plastic

  • I agree with every one else its timing chain slap fix it before it breaks and your 22re will love you for another 100k

  • timing chain slap.........

  • yeah i got the exact same problem, didn't really think it was too big a deal till i saw this thanks for posting!

  • I'm about GD done with this UTube comment Bull shit. Where'd my 1st comment go? Interspace?

These motors are so damn built they wont tell you whats wrong till they break. Get on a reputable forum, this is not the place to ask. Change the guides out with the steel ones, get the tension side at least. Most of all learn to read. If you don't have an owners manual GET ONE! REad the part it says when to REplace shit, then replace it and it will NEVER DIE!

    FUCK!

  • OK, 1st off don't come to places like this for expert advise. Get yer damn self on a Toyota forum. I hate mud is the one I use. Second off I see this time and time and time and time and time again. Look in your glove box, pull the little thing out that says "Owners Manual" read the little part were it says at blah miles replace blah. The US has had it so good with all the other disposable cars that people ALWAYS run these motors till something breaks and they stop.

  • Calm down Punk, if your tired of seing these videos, then DONT watch and go elswere on another site

    have a good day anyway

  • holy fuck this guy is annoying

  • srry i ment that f0okutubeguy

  • el tensor de la cadena del tiempo el mio anda si y le vale madre

  • timing guides broken

  • Change the timing chain before it breaks and really screws someting up.

  • Change the timing chain before it breaks and really screws someting up.

  • your timing chain is slapping. they need to be replaced every 100k on most 4 cylinders. I have a 93' i just put on in. It sounded just like that. The heat shield would never vibrate that quickly and sound like that. I just took mine off because it was loose but i never would rattle like that

  • Can a timing chain be slapping on and off like that depending on the rpm ? By the way it sounds worst when the temperature is cold

  • Sounds like a loose heat shield rattling, especially considering how the sound cuts in and out instantly above/below 2100RPM. How many miles? I have a '92 as well, but only 111K on mine...

  • I even took the heat shield off to make sure it was not that, still was rattling. Its a 92 with 225,000 Km

  • Okay; hope it's nothing too serious. The Toyota "R"-series is a robust motor; good luck!
