  • when she was young.. haha..

  • dear laura mam,

i'm glad that you sing a samouth song. however, there can be no reconciliation with the barbaric atrocious mass-murderous khmer rouge. they must be punished. there was no reconciliation with hitler & the nazi. any nazi member that survived the war & was captured was punished. there can be no reconciliation with the barbaric atrocious mass-murderous khmer rouge. they must be punished.

  • This is one of my favorite Khmer songs ever! So I actually scrolled through all 325 comments looking to see if anyone had requested the guitar chords for this song and unfortunately, no one has yet. Thus, I was wondering if I could trouble you for these chords. If you could post this up or send it to my Youtube email, I would greatly appreciate it! It's my goal to learn how to play this song so that I can play it for my folks and shock them with my Khmer vocabulary skills! Thanks a bunch.

You are also very pretty! I hope you can take this compliment from a very sincere woman who knows how to appreciate quality music and people--as well as other things in life, of course! I hope you will make it big in the music industry--if someday you'd like to become a singer. Thanks for sharing!

  • Thank you so much! I am hoping to make Khmer music soon and I hope that I can release it in Cambodia soon. I of course appreciate your sincerity!

  • A lot to say on da Khmer rouge topic of course.. whit out a doubt, But still....the revolutionary is over. What been done cannot be undone. Blame them all u want punished them all u want. Hated will lead to more hated, it's hard to forgive n forget , But life must go on.. We're in a new Era now.

Fosho U born as khmer u will always be khmer is in yah blood =]

  • A crime that was committed no matter how long ago is still a crime, and the (living) person who's proven in court to have committed it will be punished according to law, no matter how long ago he/she has committed it.

For example, the world at the very present time is still bringing Nazi war criminals to justice, although the crimes were committed more than 60 years ago.

Otherwise, people will murder, run away, hide, 30 years later come back, and are forgiven. Do you want this scenario?

  • Oh OMG Really what yr U grad @ Creekstah? Nahh one of mai boi show me this vid and he told me u go to creek. His sister might know u or seen u around whatever..

  • Very good indeed. I'm quite amazed that you speak Khmer with the Phnom Penh accent and furthermore you can sing a hit Samouth song, even though you have probably grown up in the US, and even most likely you were born there.

However I have a point of disagreement with you relating to politics. The Khmer Rouge must be punished. Reconciliation can occur only after they're punished. If they're not punished, a genocide by the Khmers against the Khmers will likely happen again.

  • dear soriya i absolutely agree that the khmer rouge should be punished. my only concern is that we will become emotionally frozen by trauma even after punishing them. i would like for justice and reconciliation, both must be achieved hand in hand, not one or the other.

and yes i was born in the states, but i think my heart remains khmer. its a strange thing. =)

  • Dear LauraMamMusic,

We essentially have the same view that the Khmer Rouge must be punished first and then reconciliation with them is possible and may even be desirable.

However I do not think that we will become emotionally frozen by trauma after punishing them. I think we au contraire will be satisfied and will attain as sense of closure, the closure to the sufferings inflicted to us during their regime and/or to the loss of our past livelihoods and/or to the loss of our relatives.

  • laura dear,

it's not a strange thing that your heart remains khmer. your parents speak only khmer 2 you since you started 2 learn 2 speak. grown up, you master the khmer language. plus your parents are from cambodia, or srok khmer. so you consciously or sub-consciously have the feelin' that you're a khmer. thus your heart is khmer.

  • U look like you when to Silver Creek or sume..I love all Sinsamuth song very Classic..nice voice..

  • who dis!? i did go to silver creek!

  • This just occured to me. Maybe the song is about a girl whose name is Chiang Mai and not the city in Northern Thailand.

  • gurl u can really sing in khmer ur really good

  • haha "look here" lolz at her expression

  • What make a person Khmer is not their skin color. I'm light skin and people think I am Filipino or Mexican. My father is dark skin. What make us Khmer is our shared experiences, beliefs and cultures and our love of our people and country.

  • rthany,

it's strange that people think you're filipino, bcoz filipinos arent known 2b light-skinned.

i've had different experience from you. here in canada people always think i'm a chinese, & i always tell them i'm from cambodia.

  • Laura, you sing beautifully in both English and Khmer. What you sing about is so true.

  • very nice song and great singer. keep it up pls

  • wow u dont look khmer but u can sing it.

  • khmergirl415 darlin',

she aint look khmer bcoz she aint khmer. she's a mixed-raced khmer-plus-chinese-or-vietnamese-or-all-3 cambodian.

i feel compassion 4 you that you aint aware that there are light-skinned cambodians, in cambodia as well as overseas.

Cambodia is the country and cambodian is the pplz and khmer is the fukn language...dont believe me ask ur fukn parents....if yall parents is 100%cambodian..The pplz that live in the jungle call khmerRouge..!!!

  • lilxasianx,

you fuckin' asshole, i discussed about the distinction between the words

"khmer" & "cambodian" with regard to people, not about what the language of cambodia is.

you fuckin' putz, take an ESL (english as a second language) course before

CHESS BONTECH BONTUOCH THVEU REUK EHNG KRO-AN BEUR!!

    d'ohh!! fuck!!

  • Hey girl, why u use many fucks around here like a whole? You're so embarrassing since you are Cambodian too. Stop living your life like this, girl.

  • ishouldhaveknowu, 1/4

she can't be both khmer & cambodian.

khmer: refers 2 the aboriginals of cambodia (if we ignore the phnorngs, the hmongs, the morns, etc). they're

    dark-skinned. "khmer" refers 2 a race.

cambodian: refers 2 the citizens of cambodia, who may be khmers, or mixed-raced khmer + chinese or vietnamese or all 3, or chinese, or vietnamese, or chams. "cambodian" refers 2 citizenship, or relationship 2 cambodia (eg, if you live in

  • Yes I knew all of this. Why you have to write a long explanation like this? No need. In the world, no one can claim that he/she is not mixed, unless they live in a jungle of an unknown place. And no need to be a pure Khmer though since we can't choose who we're gonna be before we were born. And no need to talk about who is pure or not pure here. Don't get me wrong what I said. Anyway, what I need to come here is to listen to a pretty girl speaking English and singing Khmer song well. That's it.

  • ishoulfhaveknowu,

    i see. ok.

  • ishouldhaveknowu, 2/4

canada but you're from cambodia then you can claim 2b a cambodian even if you aint have cambodian citizenship, or if you were born in the us but your parents came from cambodia then you can claim 2b a cambodian even if you aint have cambodian citizenship).

no khmer is light-skinned. if you're light-skinned then you're a mixed-raced or a chinese or a vietnamese. laura mam is undoubtedly cambodian, by the

  • ishouldhaveknowu, 3/4

    above definition. since she's

    light-skinned, she can't be a (pure) khmer. i believe she's a mixed-raced.

sin si samouth, ruos serey sothea, kung som oeun, kim nova, etc, were of the mixed-raced stock. even cambodia's present king is of the mixed-raced heritage.

warnin' 2 khmer ultra-nationalists who're readin' this post: the above discussion aint compare races, aint claim that this race is better than

  • ishouldhaveknowu, 4/4

that race or that that racial group is more intelligent than this racial group.

  • Good!!! sister. I am so proud of you....

  • Is she khmer?

  • puppy12109,

no she's not khmer, she's cambodian.

  • She is both Khmer and Cambodian. LOL {:D

  • ishouldhaveknowu,

    see posts ishouldhaveknowu, 1/4 thru 2 4/4.

  • What is the translation of "Cambodian" from english to khmer?

  • utosom,

the translation of "cambodian" from english 2 khmer is as follows:

    - noun: ni-ak kampuchea, choon poorlrot kampuchea,

    - adjective: ney (roorboss, ompi) prortess kampuchea, ney (roorboss, ompi) choon poorlrot kampuchea.

the difference between "cambodian" & "khmer" is the same as that between "american" & english". note: the percent inter-racial marriage between the khmers & other ethnics in cambodia is higher than that between the english & other ethnics in the us.

  • remark:

samouth & sothea themselves werent pure khmers. they were mixed khmer+... .

  • I never heard a Cambodian asking me like "Neak chea choon poorlrot kampuchea?" but "Neak chea Khmer dai?"

  • utosom,

    strict official meanings:

"khmer" refers 2 the aboriginals of cambodia,

"cambodian" refers to the citizens of cambodia, includin' the khmers, the mixed-raced, the ethnic chinese, vietnamese, chams, etc, or their descendants livin' abroad.

loose official & unofficial meaning of "khmer": citizen of cambodia, same as "cambodian".

in everyday life conversations, "khmer" means "cambodian".

the distinction between "khmer" & "cambodian" isnt yet realized by most cambodians.

  • the cambodian & the ant

in the khmer rouge regime, the life of a cambodian human being was like that of an ant.

how do you feel after you kill an ant??

it's the same feelin' that the khmer rouge had after they killed a cambodian human being.

true, in the murderous barbaric shameless khmer rouge regime, lives of human beings were just like those of ants. could be killed EASILY any time the khmer rouge wanted 2.

    > however i think its time for the khmer

    > people to change a narrative of blame,

    > and start a narrative of forgiveness and

    > reconciliation.

    honey, if you mean

  • C 2/5 --- laura mam,

the blame on another nation or other nations, then i agree with you. however, if you mean the blame on the khmer rouge, then i'm sorry i have 2 disagree with you. the khmer rouge carried out the massacre by their very own hands. & every rational logical person includin' me knows that they did it out of their hatred against the cambodian people, not by any order from any other nation. it's simply inconceivable illogical irrational 2 think that

  • C 3/5 --- laura mam,

they were so silly that they carried out the order of foreigners 2 commit a genocide against their OWN people.

as 4 forgiveness, if you mean forgiveness 4 the khmer rouge leaders, sorry sweetheart, they cant be forgiven. we cant even forgive a person who murders a person, we'll send him/her 2 jail, so how can we forgive a bunch of murderous barbarians who murdered 2 million innocent people!! besides, if we forgive them, a genocide, by

  • C 4/5 --- laura mam,

whatever khmer faction, is more likely 2 happen again than if we dont forgive them.

as 4 reconciliation, there cant be any reconciliation with the khmer rouge now as they as a political & military force are already gone. there are only some of their leaders now still alive who're sittin' in jail in phnom penh awaitin' trials of their crimes against humanity.

now 4 the reconciliation with the khmer rouge supporters. a reconciliation among

  • C 5/5 -- laura mam,

2 or more parties is possible only if the party or parties who did wrong admiited their guilt, ask 4 forgiveness, & promise they wont do it again. the khmer rouge supporters aint do any of these. thus there cant be any reconciliation with them.

    > At least for my parents, reading about

    > the genocides helped them understand

    > and heal. I think reading could help all

    > of us.

my sympathy 4 your parents if they went thru the reign of terror of the khmer rouge.

  • i saw somewhere on the internet the followin':

the khmer rouge ordered sin si samouth 2 write & sing a song 2 glorify their war victory over lon nol. he complied. after singin' the song, he was arrested, his tongue was cut off, & he died of a slow painful death.

what do you think about it if it's true??

  • B 1/5 -- laura mam,

    laura honey,

    > ... but yes mao ze dong killed many

    > chinese in the great purge because of

    > the same nationalist idea of "purifying

    > the nation."

mao ze dong didnt kill indiscriminately. he killed only those who opposed him, or who were suspected of opposin' him, or who were a member of the group at the top of the hierarchy of the "ancient regime" or of a section of it (eg provincial) & who were considered by him

  • dear pkving,

regardless of how we differ in opinion on certain details of these historical atrocities, i think it is fair to say both of us agree that all of these events were sick. And innocent people died and suffered for stupid reasons. however i think its time for the khmer people to change a narrative of blame, and start a narrative of forgiveness and reconciliation.

At least for my parents, reading about the genocides helped them understand and heal. I think reading could help all of us.

  • dear laura,

please see posts C ... -- laura mam.

  • B 2/5 -- laura mam,

    as "incorrectable". tha's not genocide.

pol pot killed indiscriminately. every1, repeat every1, whether they were a cabinet minister or a begger in the "ancient regime", whether they opposed him or not under his regime, was 2b killed. that's genocide.

    > another good example is Indonesia's

    > Suharto genocide in 1965-1975.

like the case of mao ze dong, the case of suharto wasnt a genocide.

    > if you want good

sweetheart, i aint need 2 read any literature about the bloody genocide by the khmer rouge against their OWN people the cambodian people. i was there, altho

  • B 4/5 -- laura mam,

i was still young then. i experienced it myself 1st-hand.

    ======================

the khmer rouge mocked education by sayin' "eylov niss keu "sach-nha kheunh" min mehn "sach-nha batt" teh" when they forced people 2 work in the fields, & by appointin' illiterate people 2 positions of power, which of course helped them in their genocide of the cambodian people, bcoz most illiterate people killed without a 2nd

  • B 5/5 -- laura mam,

    thought b4 killin'.

people who've never lived under the khmer rouge regime aint know how hateful how mockin' how atrocious how cruel how murderous they were. such people should consult with those who've lived under the khmer rouge regime 2 find out the truth about the khmer rouge.

  • laura dear,

    > however, pol pot's ideology was based on

dear, please give an example of a leader in the entire world outside of cambodia & in the entire world history who committed a genocide against his/her OWN people because he/she responded 2 the abuse of other nations on his/her nation.

  • mao ze dong and the great purge. =)

  • niluos,

    see posts B 1/5 -- laura mam and B 2/5 -- laura mam.

  • sorry accidentally replied on my brother's account but yes mao ze dong killed many chinese in the great purge because of the same nationalist idea of "purifying the nation." another good example is Indonesia's Suharto genocide in 1965-1975.if you want good literature on genocide that has great answers for your great questions, i would definitely recommend Samantha Powers' "A Problem From Hell". It is an in depth account of many genocides and mass murders like these.

  • (A 1/9 B -- laura mam,)

    laura dear,

    if:

pol pot's ideology was based on

nationalist reactions to 100 years of

french colonial abuse, US governmental abuse, and Vietnamese paranoia,

then why did he mass-murder the cambodian people?? why why why????????????

why didnt he mass-murder the french or the americans or the vietnamese?? why why why????????????

  • A 2/9 -- laura mam,

also went thru exactly the same situations. why didnt the communist laotians commit a genocide agaisnt their OWN people the laotian people??

    > And I absolutely agree with you that Khmers

    > should realize we are not in any way purer

    > than others, but we should also have enough

    > pride to not abuse each other and our

the khmers not only aint have pride to not abuse each other & their country, they even have pride to commit a genocide against

  • A 3/9 -- laura mam,

    their OWN people.

    > What I want to promote is the fact that we

    > need to stop a blaming narrative.

some khmers now blame vietnam 4 orderin' the khmer rouge 2 commit the genocide. they're 2 stupid 2 realize that by blamin' another nation on the genocide they stupidly declare that the khmers are so idiotic that they follow the order of foreigners 2 commit a genocide against their own people. they're 2 silly 2 understand that by blamin' other people

  • A 4/9 -- laura mam,

4 everythin' bad they've done they'll never be able 2 learn from their past mistakes & thus will never be able 2 correct anythin', & hence they'll likely 2 commit a genocide against their OWN people again.

    > The Khmer Rouge did not hate Khmers, they

  • A 5/9 -- laura mam,

khmer rouge even killed the socialist & communist cambodian intellectuals returnin' from france 2 cambodia in an attempt 2 help them re-build the country. repeat, the khmer rouge hate every cambodian who hadnt lived under their rule b4 17 apr 1975.

    > I am not giving them lenience, their

  • A 6/9 -- laura mam,

just 4 a short time of only about 4 months, i already realized how hateful they were against the cambodian people. the reason is absolutely simple: hatred. why didnt the communist laotians kill their brothers & sisters??

    > Israel-GAZA conflict is the same in that they are fixated on BLAMING.

    > What we al need is forgiveness.

sorry sweetheart, the atrocity, cruelty, & crime of the khmer rouge were so extensive that they (the khmer rouge) cant be forgiven. besides killin', they did the followin':

    - they brole up families, husband, wife, & children were each forced 2 go to different far-away places 2 work in the fields

    - there were no hospitals, if you had just fever then you died

    - there was no money for use by the

    population

    - there was no communication among the population: no travel, no post office, forget about the telephone

    - they forced people 2 work hard in the fields 12 or more hours a day & yet they starved them

    - no romance was allowed

    - no hospital, no school of any level, no post office, no market, no shops, no radios, no tv's, no nothin'

    - there was only 1 punishment: death

    etc

  • khmerflower,

good good. let's forget about it. good 4 you that you also were about 2 initiate it.

sweetheart, after all, we all just want all cambodians 2 unite, whether they're light-skinned or dark-skinned or mixed or pure khmer.

  • GO GIRL!

  • dear friends. please stop fighting about nationalist issues like this. the reason i said inter-southeast asian unity is because nationalist issues like the ones we are all fighting about are what caused the cambodian genocide, vietnam war, and the preah vihear thai-khmer racism. let us face the facts: before french colonization, there were no such things as borders. we had kings and kingdoms based on mandalas, which are circular kingdoms that stretched outward, no borders. please lets stop hate.

  • laura mam,

honey, i'm sorry i have 2 beg 2 differ from you on this 1 point: the cause of the cambodian genocide.

the cambodian genocide was NOT caused by anythin' other than the khmer rouge's hatred against the cambodian people.

ok ok i agree with you on all other points.

  • dear pkving,

if it's alright with you i would like to open a healthy forum of discussion in this issue for the reconciliation of khmer generations. i agree that the atrocities of the khmer rouge are based on their radical interpretation of communism. however, pol pot's ideology was based on nationalist reactions to 100 years of french colonial abuse, US governmental abuse, and Vietnamese paranoia.

  • What i want to point out is that before the colonial creation of borders in indochina, people although ethnically divided were loyal to kings not nations. This explains Khmer Surin in Thailand and Thai-Laos. Yes we have a different history with the vietnamese, but the point is nationalism is made up. And I absolutely agree with you that Khmers should realize we are not in any way purer than others, but we should also have enough pride to not abuse each other and our country.

  • What I want to promote is the fact that we need to stop a blaming narrative. The Khmer Rouge did not hate Khmers, they hated exploitation. I am not giving them lenience, their solution of killing brothers and sisters was unjustified and extremist, but you cannot say their reasons are that simple. Israel-GAZA conflict is the same in that they are fixated on BLAMING. What we al need is forgiveness. In essence, you and I are arguing for the same thing and I commend you for speaking for unity.

  • laura mam,

please see posts A -- laura mam

  • laura dear,

please give an example of a leader in the entire world outside of cambodia & in the entire world history who committed a genocide against his/her OWN people because he/she responded 2 the abuse of other nations on his/her nation.

  • hey laura your talented i wish there where more girls in north carolina liked you someone i can related to...

  • A 1/3 -- khmerflower,

i think your mom is honest, perhaps she knows some thai woman, & she saw that laura mam looks like the thai woman, so she thought laura is a thai. the fact that the song is "bophar chhiang mai" simply re-inforced her thought. this is only my theory. now, your mom's thought about laura is no big deal. so we can forget about it.

honey, please dont be sad that your skin is dark. it's the inside that counts. besides, remember the khmer

  • A 2/3 -- khmerflower,

expression "srey sror-ehm srorss"!! "kuor aui sneha"!! d'ohh!! there are many oldies songs, most by sin si samouth, alone or in a duet, that decribe a man's love 4 "srey sror-ehm", or even 4 "srey khmao"!! d'ohh!!

in cambodia in the past, many cambodia's chinese men married dark-skinned pure khmer women. that was bcoz, by tradition, pure khmer women were faithful, honest, lovin', carin', accommodatin'. their dark skin was no obstacle. it's the inside that
