Every time I go to Tampa to visit family I go to Lowry Park Zoo. I only go to look at the manatees. I stay at the manatee area while my family goes and looks at everything else at the zoo.

Louisiana has a growing manatee population. Lake Pontchartrain, in the New Orleans area, is actually a large brackish water lagoon connected to the Gulf of Mexico. Every summer, more and more manatees are making a home in the lake as well as bottlenose dolphins and an occasional sea turtle. When the weather gets colder they return to the Gulf, but since it's pretty hot most of the year here the sightings are becoming more frequent.

Cayman is actually doing pretty well. Eating solids and growing. We do have quite a few baby manatees right now. They are all orphans who have lost mom. We do have a release coming up. It is a baby that we brought into the zoo as an orphan. He was successfully raised to a healthy teen, and is now heading back home!
