I cried when I watched this, because I both feel sorry for and admire Brown. The way he dealt with the economic crisis was not condemned by the global community, quite the opposite, he was recognised by the Governments of europe as a great economist and a great leader through those times. I'm not a big follower of British politics, so I'm curious. I know that Gordon Brown wasn't really cut out for the responsibility and PR of PM from what I read (What with being a treasurer). He also appears to have royally fucked over the economy for years.

The UK banks had to be bailed out, and this is what has caused the deficit. General international opinion is that Brown did the right thing. Should he have done more to regulate the banks earlier? Sure. But do you honestly think a Tory (or UKIP) government would have had harsher banking regulations than Labour? Come on!

Brown was a complete and utter failure. In 1997, he inherited an economy that was virtually flawless. Whilst Chancellor, he spent extortionate amounts of money without a care in the world for its effect on the economy. When he finally becamse Prime Minister, he and Alastair Darling continued the approach that had been gradually destroying the economy for ten disastrous years. This was a huge contributor to the recession and it is therefore deceptive to blame the bankers for all that went wrong.

Why am I not surprised to see vitriol on this forum. I did not like all of Mr Brown's policies- I positively disliked some of them. He also made serious economic mistakes.

The raids lead to two civilian planes being bombed one of which was Pan Am 103. I cried when I watched this, because I both feel sorry for and admire Brown. The way he dealt with the economic crisis was not condemned by the global community, quite the opposite, he was recognised by the Governments of europe as a great economist and a great leader through those times. Unfortunately the public decided they would rather have a photoshopped, PR-friendly Cameron rather than the professional economist Brown to guide our country through the worst economic crisis since the 30s.

I'm not a big follower of British politics, so I'm curious. I know that Gordon Brown wasn't really cut out for the responsibility and PR of PM from what I read (What with being a treasurer). He also appears to have royally fucked over the economy for years.
But sometimes it sounds like the press harped on him just because he was an easy target, even on things not related to the economy or social issues.
This is just my opinion, I'm sure I'm wrong on very many regards.

The UK banks had to be bailed out, and this is what has caused the deficit. General international opinion is that Brown did the right thing. Should he have done more to regulate the banks earlier? Sure. But do you honestly think a Tory (or UKIP) government would have had harsher banking regulations than Labour? Come on!

@MultiWarfighter £4.8 trillion is the national debt or £80,000 per citizen if your including government debt, private debt, PFI liabilities and pension liabilities. This equates well over %100 of GDP up there with the likes of Greece and Ireland and we know what happened to them. The point being that one or more of the above components will default in the future, probably the one furthest in the future i.e pensions.... which one would you suggest ?

Brown was a complete and utter failure. In 1997, he inherited an economy that was virtually flawless. Whilst Chancellor, he spent extortionate amounts of money without a care in the world for its effect on the economy. When he finally becamse Prime Minister, he and Alastair Darling continued the approach that had been gradually destroying the economy for ten disastrous years. This was a huge contributor to the recession and it is therefore deceptive to blame the bankers for all that went wrong.

@flow789 -- I was hoping for Ed, too; because he's got the philosophy most likely to return to Labour's roots.
New Labour, IMO, was a failure and a betrayal of its original stick-up-for-the-little-guy philosophy. Corporatization brought the party short-term success and long-term failure... just like Clinton's triangulation here in the US.

Why am I not surprised to see vitriol on this forum. I did not like all of Mr Brown's policies- I positively disliked some of them. He also made serious economic mistakes.
But I think he deserves a lot more credit for the hard work he done on addressing poverty and debt in Africa. Racists here will say that is irrelevant. I disagree. Gordon Brown may not have been an outstanding PM, he made fundamental mistakes but im tired of people completely and irrationally demonising his name.

cont.... it was also Gordon Brown who helped bring in the National Minimum Wage- a good policy to those with a conscience. I don't like or support the Tories but I will support David Cameron if I think he makes the right decision- his stance on Lockerbie for example. This is one thing that puts me off British politics. People get so fiercely partisan that instead of opposing some policies they oppose all policies just for the sake of it. Call me what you will but I respected Gordon Brown.

The best thing would be to stop helping all these countries that after nearly 30 years are still no better off. When they were given independance by the Dutch, British and French they couldn't govern and a system of corruption spread.

At least Sir Anthony Eden was elected in his own right after immediately calling a General Election and increasing the number of Conservative MPs. Nobody ever wanted Autism Boy Brown as PM and he had no mandate to govern.

The consequences of this irresponsible behaviour will have dire consequences for us. As for his fiscal ineptitude. Well there is and will be plenty of literature published about this.
