It's shocking that Yi Soon Shin isn't more widely known outside of Korea. Considering all of his handicaps too (jealous peers, politicians, etc.), he has done more with even less.
I'm pretty sure this part is an anachronism; the Turtle Ship was built with such careful planning, and even much testing, to fully ensure this not happening. There is even debate and speculation as to whether the ship was truly plated or if it only had the spikes, although a full scale turtle ship (with plates) was recreated and is functional
