  • in both those places, I now live in Craigmillar and such a difference compared to the other so called respected areas of Edinburgh. People are evidently jealous that we have a beautiful art deco building that was refurbed and has not been vandalised despite everyone from outside the area saying/hoping it would just so they could say, Told you so!! Portobello in particular is full of wannabe posh people. A seaside town littered with dog shit on every pavement and graffiti everywhere you look

  • notice all the idiots commenting claiming to know so much when in reality the knowledge of this area is zilch!! I know a lot of people who have come from niddrie and they are the most decent and honest people I know, just a shame so many assume that everyone sponges of the social and shoots up on every street corner!! Far from the reality from what I recal, I grew up in East lothian, I moved out of my parents hose to Live in Leith, then I moved on to Portobello. found there to be more problems

  • @MrRag87 lived in craigmillar from 97 till 03. i left with a heavy heart . Even as a Glaswegian i was made to feel welcome. 5 minute walk from deprivation you have Craigmillar Castle, Views to die for and thank god yer alive! And now i'm down south in Stockport, a so- called affluent area of England.. Sir Alex and Wayne live a few miles from me , but it doesnt hold the riches i took from Niddrie. let it flourish

  • NIDDRIE ! Ewwww absolute minging place to live!

  • Most eh all the houses r done now n theyv cleans up craigmiller quite a bit ti it looks a million times Better :Dx

  • The William Hill is in rude health at least....

  • haha i stay in gilmerton n i love niddrie its minteed :E:E!

  • niddrie and broomhouse and wester hailes are nothing compared to drummy or the gorbles in glasgow

  • @liamchalmers Aw here we go...

  • Good video and soundtrack, I spent the first half of my life growing up there, and while it had a reputation as a hard place YNT etcI think if anything it made me learn a lot of coping skills and strategies that stood me in good stead for the rest of my life. I remember where I lived, saw it 2 years ago, it looked so small once they knocked the flats down. What a radge life it's been.Cheers J

  • I was a foreign tourist wandering into this place. I just thought that scenery was absolutely beautiful and want to go back to take as many pictures as possible.

Is the security really bad around there, and why are there so many derelict buildings in that area? I can't find much information on the internet. It's a big mystery to me.

  • haha you find it beautiful i hate the place, security should be ok cus msot of the people ahve left

  • @Guardian016 its been cleaned up now but avoid it at night just to be safe the houses are new but the people aren't

  • @Guardian016 Not too beautiful if you live there though.

  • Great video - I have great memories of Niddrie, Caigmillar & Greendykes - Like eveywhere else in the world some good people & some not so good people.

Niddrie was a great place to be brought up - Loads of kids/cousins to play with, countyside on your door-step, burns & woods to explore & always great chippies.

OK we were all pretty poor but we didn't know we were poor because we were all too busy enjoying our childhood - FREEDOM.

Good luck & thanks for taking the time to make the video.

  • I used to go through the tunnel to niddrie marischal school between 1951 to 54 .glad when i got back to Bingham Broadway where i lived till 1964 , T hen moved to sunny Queensland Australia . Now that was a very good move for sure . Duncan.

  • I like this. Whats the music?

  • i live there it was was the best place

  • slums are not slums to begin with, its the people who live there that make it that way,the houses could still be there in niddrie its the people who turned it in to a slum.

  • I was born here in 1966 - moved back to live with my grandparents for 4 years when i was 19 - cycled to work every day and was never attacked by kids but it was no playground. It was a dangerous part of Edinburgh but it's changed a great deal. You could go to almost any satellite town in scotland and find a 'niddrie' ... just like you could go to any circus and find a marty25123. Clown.

  • most of that has since been demolished, one thing i hate about people who say "get a job" is that they seem to forget that there AREN'T jobs for people who don't go to university anymore

  • I see an Adult learning centre in this video, pity nobody goes to it to learn about life, education, working etc., I can bet you that the Dole office is much busier!? And to think , the unemployment is at around 85% in Niddrie alone! SHAME SHAME SHAME!

Great Video though and I love the music!

  • great vid

  • Not been up that way for a while, are those flats torn down now? You are brave, driving through those parts of Niddrie, saying that it is daytime so not quite so bad...

  • @early1900s No bother driving through it. I walked through it for most of my life.

  • wit fukin pussies live there jst smash the wee cunts ull be fine

  • I was going to move here till i seen this video. Thanks to the person who uploaded this!!!. I am from fife and this is really upsetting to see that people used to and still do live this way.I live in england now and was going to move back to scotland.I was feeling homesick and now i just feel plain sick. What a dump. I feel sorry for the decent people caught up in all of that

  • Its was murder to cycle past there on my way to my work, kids would hit you with stone and try and steal your bike and there only about 5 6 7 8 years old. lol

  • this is an eye opening experience, i live in boness near falkirk, some people will say its a dive, others say its nice, like anywhere tho it has good & bad areas, ive heard about niddry tho, it'll b good 2 c it after the re-development,

out of curiosity, do any of u recall the trainspotting theme where renton overdoses and gets dragged out on2 the street, what area is that, i had no idea and my chick thinks its muirhouse

  • that scene where he overdoses wis filmed in maryhill glasgow not edinbra ;) look on flickr fur pics ;)

  • well the bit where he gets pulled outside and id lying waiting for an ambulance WAS filmed in Niddrie

  • lensbear is a fuckin rocket. nice video m8

  • Can anyone out there spell? I see some of you can but perhaps people get too caught up in their anger and outrage to take the time to both review and edit their comments before posting. Niddrie held some memories and not all were bad. Yes the people cause the problems, however a lack of amenities does them no favours, out of the city without money to interact with the rest of the world they can begin to feel like outcasts and therefore any problems that were there already can escalate.

  • welcome to loserville.what a fucking slum.people of niddrie want to be ashamed of thereselfs for turning there are into a fucking shitehole.ANIMALS

  • not everyone who lived there turned it into a shithole/

  • not everyone but enough people did.

  • @lensbear thats why trainspotting was set in Leith i spose?

  • What a fucking dump, I live in Aberdeen and there is no where near as bad as that there

  • the houses there are like the ones in stenhouse but in stenhouse theres basiclay no trouble

  • WE have very much the same sort of dereliction in Liverpool. Although, the houses/ estate in the film reveals how much green space you had between the properties!

  • There were houses there, they got knocked down/burned down a few years before the ones you see in the video.

  • thats the way it was when i lived and breathed the community.. simply cos i was made welcome.. i live in manchester now, made some cash.. i will retire to craigmillar

    or mibbes Porty lol

  • I really hope that you are right. Fingers crossed!

  • I have moved in here 3 years ago - got council house. I still do walk out after 8pm. In the late evenings you can meet groups of youth in high numbers such as 20 people. Lately buses from Fort Kinnaird were diverted to the city centre through Duddingston as on NMR war occupied with youngsters throwing stones at vehicles. I will just finish my PhD and run away ASAP... sad place...

  • When the kids are left to their own devices through social deprivation and other causes its no surprise that anti-social behaviour reigns, Im a bus driver whos lived in Niddrie for years, It is sad how the area has deteriorated but not that surprising, kids through stones all over the place, thats a fact of life, its not just Niddrie. Things WILL improve in the years ahead.

  • This is a brilliant video.

  • Cheers!

  • Y.N.T Forever..!!

  • I was born right there, Niddrie Mains Road...

It was so difficult growin up there, it was poverty stricken & every adult seemed to be an Alcoholic... I can't say I have many fond memories, only depressing ones & sad ones... But when you grow up you're so unaware of what you don't have... Niddrie will never change no matter what they do to it. When i was wee it was alcoholism, now it's Herion... It's sad...

  • Has the new build started? I havent been back to Scotland for a long time, its sad to see the place like that.

  • They have started building the new houses. The scheme is going to look totally different

  • Thats good, are you going to take some pictures of the new buildings, it would be good to see the difference, thanks GR

  • Ill do something once its done defo.!

  • there are no shite areas just shite people...

  • YNT all the way, they destroyed the buildings but not our memories. cunts.

this is a good tune, man. who is it?

  • Aye good point! The tune? Its Massive Attack, Black Milk

  • Grim. Just pure Grim.

  • thats a really creepy place, reminds me of chernobyl for some reason.

  • I lived in Niddrie Avenue in the early 80's...a lot of heroin and a lot of glue, I,m not suprised it's still vacant..the only people who get decent housing in Edinburgh are rich...it's getting worse not better.

  • And can someone please pm or comment the name of this song plz? its great

  • Yes! that's the Niddrie that I grew up in its a shame that those houses had to be demolished there was nothing wrong with them!

  • yuuh dinny even ken how much its empty until this video loikes but they r buildin stunnin hooses there (Y) lol yeesh im soo wantin ti moove inti yin

  • what ppl seem to forget as 2 meters across the road its all been done up n lookin gd so dont let this video tell it all go ursel and have a look loads of ppl still live in niddrie just not niddrie mains

  • niddrie is class and the ppl stick together am a ned and am proud of it and i wasnt deprived of anything my whole family are from niddrie. im not living there anymore but i would go bk any day xxxxxxxxxx

  • its nae as bad as wher ahm stayin now..easterhouse..fur 1 naebdy stays ther and the hooses are a differant type!...... less shite mair space between ehm!

  • lol n ware in easterhoose u fae ye speak lit yer fae fife ur sumthin

  • Ghetto. English cunts will be coming and thinking its chic like they did with scummy leith.

  • godforbiddrie - home of the deprived and the depraved niddrie bandits

  • i hope they only renovate the place instead of building the crappy new houses theyre building now

  • I was born in Niddrie and lived in the area until I was 17 and went to uni. Never had any trouble and I'm definitely not a ned! Sure, there's loads of dodgy characters, but the majority people are GOOD people. Hope it get's done up soon, they've been doing for bloody years and nothing has progressed!

  • I see me chumming my pal doing her paper round, were my granny would send me for milk.

The council used It as a waste bin!goverments !! good families had had to uproot. One of my other Pals who doesnt live there now either took her dad around In the car just a few months ago,she remem good times, his wasnt so good, every one has there own take, This place I grew up In really was the uni of life , One things gauranteed when you come fi there, youll never be a sloane alone.Good work.

  • used to live in Wauchope ave.. being a Weegie I expected to get a bit of grief. Never met so welcoming people in my life, so much so , I stayed for 7 years! people are brilliant..and what a fekkin view! what more can anyone want?

  • thats horrible although there are worse places like the strone in greenock or port glasgow or glasgow itself

  • niddre/craigmillar is the 3rd most deprived area in scotland accordoing to the scottish exec's report.

  • man, a true ghost town, i would be freaked out if i had to walk around there on my own

  • here m8 even if your wit only 1 person walkin around there ur still goin 2 get piked on

so i would advise 2 bring 6 folk who experienced gettin hit and hittin sum1, if u wanted to get 2 fort kinnaird which is on the other side

  • have u ever lived in niddrie 2hugohmfc?? coz if u havent then i guess u should shut up i lived there all my life and loved the place av moved away now but wont have a bad word to say.

  • aint this where the film "acid house" was filmed at? or at least the second part as the film was split into 3 parts

  • Just noticed your question. Ive only seen the Granton Star Cause from the Acid House but that's in Muirhouse and West Pilton. The football scenes were at Muirhouse Park (now completely gone and with new housing), the scene where Bob changes his T-shirt is at Pennywell and the Phone box is on Ferry Road Drive. Most of the setting are unrecognisable now.

  • Christ it looks desperate these days. I took a drive there a couple of weeks ago when i was back on holiday in Edinburgh, it all looks so strange now.

  • ha ha ha nid tramps

  • if they reopen Niddrie and get rid of the scum living there it would be fine

  • Mabye can be one of the dodgyist places in Edinburgh but i tell you something you couldnt get nicer people not all but the majority !

  • is it as rough as it is rundown?? oh and whats the song called? its a awsome vid tho

  • does anyone live there?? the vid is really good haunting. really does anyone live there cos it looks like no one has set foot in there in years. its not like easterhouse where i stay its more open ended. is it violent too

  • There is a couple of people still in the houses, although I think they have recently moved out. no wonder though really.

  • i live in Manchester now.. not a bad area btw.. would move back to Craigmillar in a fekkin hearbeat. can see ma auld boozer lol . the tavern.. OI! GAV? you watching this .. fone me mate.. Tommy. ps . congrats on the bairn mucker. .. stay oot the bookies! lol

  • good vid.. used to live next to the bingo hall .. lived in the area for 7 years.. moved to manchester a few years ago.. hope to visit my mates soon and see the changes made

  • Great music ..whats the track called ?

Used to work down there a few years back....

  • good vid, mind you its no gud spending millions on craigmillar and letting the neds and junkies back in!

  • I used to live there, and yes, it's a shit hole but you showed alot of the properties more than once, just going the other way down the road. Not quite sure who's benefit this video is for? Do you expect councillors to watch it and take notice?

  • Thanks for yer comments. The clips not for any councillor to take notice off, I dont care what they think of this. I lived there, my folks still live there and I have lots of memories of what the area looked liked and wanted to show those who have moved away from Niddrie what it looks like now. Simple as that. There are only 3 shots used again and thats because it was done on my mobile & I was running out of memory when I recorded it

  • I live in Niddrie along at the Hays, great video mate! come back in a few years and do a follow up! people will not believe the change!!

    Cheers.

  • what about pilton?

  • what about it? lol

  • YNT

  • the council are planning on demolishing the whole of niddrie to make way for some fancy este projects hopefully bigger and better flats

  • Superb video hope it dose not get removed again, It is important to remind us of Niddrie and what it ment to us, spare a thought for Edinburgh Council...

  • spare a THOUGHT? WHY.. I HAD TO MOVE FROM A PLACE I LOVE COZ ALL THE NEW HOUSES BEING BUILT WERE SOLD TO FOLK WHO QUED OUTSIDE THE DOCTORS WAITING FOR THEM TO BE RELEASED! REMEMBER THAT? THE OLD DOCS @ THE BOTTOM OF THE CASTLE BRAE

  • .....It was ment very much toung in cheek.

  • I used to have a friend who stayed in niddrie and it was always really dodgy full of junkies and neds one of the worst areas in Edinburgh.

  • Brilliant!! Its really haunting watching it. Do you think this would encourage action in the area? I wonder what the people who once lived there (or still are) would make of this.

  • looks like a town condemed land of the living dead

  • have seen some really bad stuff posted about Niddrie, but I have to say this film was great, loved the background music too. Really looks like a ghost town

  • good video of niddrie for a change good one mate daza mcv fi ynt

  • MP Gavin Strang recently complained about YouTube allowing a video shot in this area because it showed "irresponsible behaviour that leads to heartbreak and death" and then said "They should pull these videos immediately" and it magically vanished.

This is also an illustration of "irresponsible behaviour that leads to heartbreak and death".

    Please don't remove it.

  • OOPS. Correction:

Gavin Strang is the MP for the area but he wasn't the one who made the comments. For some reason Nigel Griffiths took it upon himself to do that.
