Isn't one of the things judged in Karate tournies control? It was a good punch with solid impact, but it seemed like a flash knockout rather than the sort of commited puch I learned in my (brief) experience with Karate.
You think Kyoshi wouldn't knock your ass out by barely touching you? You have a lot to learn about Kobayashi grasshopper. He's lucky Kyoshi didn't kill him.
everyone here keeps explaining it as if he affected the spinal cord.from what i see i beg to differ.from what it looks like to me it was a blow to the aorta valve (1 of 2) that gives direct blood supply to the brain. notice after the impact his hand slides behind his head showing he applied force through that target AND the KEY POINT, if he was concussed he would of went limp immediately.notice it took him a second to drop cold.blood supply was momentarily cut off, i bet he went fuzzy and all
well, that's kind of missleading...im sure not just any straight punch will do.
this guy does karate...im sure that has something to do with it. I don't do shorinryu but at least in shotokan we're taught to use internal contractions to generate power.
i'm sure shorin ryu also has some sort of small undetectable techniques that aids in power generation.
but damn, that was a pretty nicely timed attack to jodan.
A concussive knockout from an impact to the head occurs when a force is significant enough to jar the head and neck in a way that causes the head to snap fast enough to make the brain slam up against the walls of the skull. In order to prevent further damage, your brain will turn you off.
Here, you see an example of the pressure point behind the ear being exploited. It looks as though the KO'd man was hit behind his left ear. If you feel back there, you don't have as much cranial density.
Yes it's illegal, which is why the crowd didn't seem pleased. But this clip shows you the effectiveness nonetheless. And the punch may not have looked hard, but when you're hitting to an area like the back of the head, you don't need much force to do a lot of damage.
That looked like a ridge hand to the back of the head! I have been with Sensei Stolsmark for about 14 years. He is a great teacher, great guy and a hell of a great fighter. I wouldn't train with anyone else. Love the business card on the trophy at the end!! ha
Gold medal on the line, the USA team hadn't won much that day. My coach encouraged me to fight hard. Although I was awarded the championship, some Italian character whined and they gave "Sleepy" the Gold Medal. I put my business card in his trophy cup after he woke up. -Neil Stolsmark
it is disaster!

not the most commited punch, but solid none the less. good punch!

Indeed, no respect at all...
Anyways,
If I were to take someone out I would either kick him in the groin OR punch the throat.
Punching knockout points is hard and it's basically the only thing you can do when having to deal with ''rules''

Where is the respect and traditional demeanor ...
