It's not that Lezak won the race, it's that the idiot from France lost the race. It's almost as if he was paid off. My 12 year old knows not to swim on the ropes and give drag to the opposition. The US team should have given the Frenchman a 5th gold medal as part of the US team.

Lezak didn't save the race, the idiot from France lost the race. This is like saying whoever won the British Open against Jean Van de Velde won the open when in actuallity, Van de Velde lost the US Open. The 100 Free Gold Medalist swam that race as stupidly as someone could possibly do. Had he swum on the other lane marker, France would have won the relay by over a body length's lead.
The US team should have given one of their gold medals to the Frenchman.

I saw that when the olympics was on tv and i started to shake when i saw it. I never thought lezak could take that up. When i swam 4x50 meter with my swimming team i took in 1 secound and i was really happy to take in that much.
it isn't too difficult to understand, when lezak hit the water he was already behind bernard and was able to ride in his wake. In swimming, if you can position yourself into someone elses wake it not only makes the race easier on you (likw swimming in a current), it makes the race more difficult on the opponent because it feels like he is being pulled back. Lezak rode Bernards wave all the way up to the point where he could unleash the extra effort saved up from riding Bernard to take the win.
Nothing in all my years of swimming has being in someones wake ever helped anyone, especially in a sprint. From what understand, if anything, the wake would have been more detrimental to Lezak.

sorry but it was not a body length and a half, it was maybe half a body length. and the third swimmer for the French was on fire.. so no matter who swam that third leg(with the exception of Lezak), they would have lost the lead....
the descriptions of that race in this video could not have been more mundane.
if you're going to explain how, explain how. splits aren't how. the how is because bernard tightened up when he saw lezak catching him. thus the more bernard tightened up, the slower he went, and the more lezak went faster because he saw how well he was doing. the psychology behind it was how...not this so much.
lezak went in half a second behind and by the first 50, he was .8 almost a full second behind. At this point bernard had to be feeling great. Lezak did not make a move until the last 15 meters. He sat on bernards wave all the way until that last 15 meters with a great finish. To take nothing away from lezak, i think it was the greatest and most perfect swim i have ever witnessed.
yeah, i'm saying that lezak just made a great move. bernard probably figured that since he was already ahead--sprinting the start and making his move then would make lezak feel like crap. in a sprint, it's usually the first guy to make a move that wins. but lezak made his move at exactly the right time--when bernard was starting to get tired. and then the rest of it's already been explained. it's interesting how you can get into someone's head in a race if you swim it correctly.

if you're going to explain how, explain how. splits aren't how. the how is because bernard tightened up when he saw lezak catching him. thus the more bernard tightened up, the slower he went, and the more lezak went faster because he saw how well he was doing. the psychology behind it was how...not this so much.

putting the video aside,
lezak went in half a second behind and by the first 50, he was .8 almost a full second behind. At this point bernard had to be feeling great. Lezak did not make a move until the last 15 meters. He sat on bernards wave all the way until that last 15 meters with a great finish. To take nothing away from lezak, i think it was the greatest and most perfect swim i have ever witnessed.

yeah, i'm saying that lezak just made a great move. bernard probably figured that since he was already ahead--sprinting the start and making his move then would make lezak feel like crap. in a sprint, it's usually the first guy to make a move that wins. but lezak made his move at exactly the right time--when bernard was starting to get tired. and then the rest of it's already been explained. it's interesting how you can get into someone's head in a race if you swim it correctly.

EU countries got 72 gold to USA's 36.Thats not counting the recent countries from central and eastern europe.Britain+Germany alone got 35 gold and together they only half the population of the USA.And then theres Russia.Whole of Europe got over 100 gold to USA's 36.And I'm not from Europe.

Think of this more, We do not fund these Olympics as much as other countries do, we play baseball, football, and golf. Thats our main source of idealism. Swimming, Running, Track sports are completely UNDERFUNDED, so its amazing that we won so many Golds this year.

The populations of Germany,Britain,Italy and France does not even equal that of USA?And yes, the USA does fund swimming,athletetics etc.Ever heard of the NCAA system and the like?In other countries people go to university for an education,in USA you go to uni for sport - your education system subsidises your sport.And real football in Europe is 3756867473473438 times more popular than athletics and swimming. Typical. This commentator failed to mention that Sullivan set (at the time) a world record in the 100m free (leadoff swimmers can do that in relays) of 47.24 (later lowered to 47.05 by Sullivan in the semis of the individual).If it was an American who set the world record im sure this commentator would have spent 16 hours talking about it.
