I'd never teach a student loops and rolls until they are comfortable with hovering in all orientations. Then teach autos because there is no point in progressing into forward flight if you can't land successfully when you engine fails. Each lesson should be a building block to the next lesson.
1. Tail in hover
2. Nose in hover
3. Left and right side in hover.
4. Stationary Autorotations, start low and progressively build altitude.
I just recently bought CV and started practicing. I'm able to to hover for now (after couple of days). Should I complete the whole practice routine with CV or buy a heli and practice simultaneously on it?
Dude your vids on rc heli's are the best on youtube. I've watched a ton of them and never get bored half way through unlike most other peoples vids...keep up the good work and you're helping me learn a lot!
Hey NightFlyer - do you have a video showing how one installs one of those 'training kits' onto helicopters? I have a new 4CH 2.4Ghz Esky Co-Comanche and bought the training kit which came with no instructions for assembly or use with that aircraft..
I have a Dynam 6 ch USB transmitter with Clearview Sim and want to know what channel to set the upper left toggle switch to(5 ch Gyro)? same for the upper right knob on my transmitter(Gear/Pit). and finally the (mix) toggle switch? I have my settings set up now as Throttle (reverse) Z axis, Rudder Z rotation, Alieron X axis, Elevator Y axis, Idle up Y rotation, and theottle hold X rotaion. not sure if they are correct because I cannot fly inverted? Please set me straight. Thanks alot.
I got the clearview sim and it has helped me a lot already and it's only been a couple of days. I crashed A LOT at first and nearly gave up but i am getting better. Thanks Mr. Herbert!
really nice Video,I need help? I just purchase a Heli form exheli and i try to put the cd that come with it do I can practice and it dosen't work. How could i fix the problem.thank you
which sim would you say is better? im not to worried about the $ but i just want the best flight physics. i was thinking about getting the realflight g5 because of its online pilot vs. pilot and its in cockpit viewpoint plus the remote is a mock-up of the futaba 6ex. any advice?
Just wanna say 2 you Dave that i´m so thankful that you have inspired me to getting into this absolutely mega great hobby. Thx a million man and please keep the awesome work up with your supergreat videos. Marry xmas to you and all other r/c helipilots out there.
I recognize that field ! I have crashed there many times.
Thanks again, another great video. You are my inspiration...old engineer guy asking what can I do for fun and NOT get killed doing it. I gave up fast bikes a long time ago.
@wkialyleiam I know this was months ago and you may have found your answer since, but I saw what you are wanting to know in how to videos by sokal11, search sokal11 Basic Flight Theory and sokal11 Coordinated Turns. I would have posted the links, but it would not allow me.
As always a good video! It's nice to see you display the sticks in clear view. You've shown it before using a real radio, but it's not the same as seeing it done on the same screen so one can just watch few times and really pay attention to the stick movements. Thx a bunch!
If you ever get time to do some slow circles and figure 8 flying with sticks visible it would be great. Altitude control while transitioning turn/turn or turn/straight is a huge challenge to me, so is flying slow.. :)
Yes and no. It is same version that you keep once you purchase, but it requires a license key to stay working for more than the minute or 2 initially enabled.
Hi i just buyid a Peonix Rc simulator and i noticed that ur able to nightfly on it and its really cool but this summer ive been flying my airplanes and i need to get to fly my honeybee king 2 more and the pheonix sim has taht model in there so i will be training all winter so this really helps me thank you
the left stick is used for the throttle and collective pitch on 3d hellis but for coaxial or non-3d hellis its just used for trottle and the collective pitch is fixed, thats moving the stick up and down. moving it left and right works the tail rotor and makes the nose of the heli rotate left and right or clockwise and counter clockwise. the right stick is used for the cyclic, pushing it up will make the nose drop down and the heli will start flying foward, pulling it back will make the tail drop
i forgot to explain cyclic too...cyclic is only controlled by the right stick and pivots the swash plate foward and back and left and right. Now for the collective pitch, on most 3d hellis it is separate from the throttle and the throttle is controlled by the throttle trim and the motors will stay one speed now on some 3d hellis they are combined so the left stick will work the collective and the throttle....now to explain collective more detailed....
the collective pitch means the swash plate is being pushed up and down, the whole plate not just pivoting like the cyclic does, and that makes the rotor blades twist and creates more or less thrust or more or less wind, if you've ever seen a 3d heli sit on the ground with the motors at full throttle then it shoots up in the sky all of a sudden, that is what the collective pitch does, at 0 pitch or no collectiv pitch the rotors are completly level and wont create any wind, pushing up on the left
stick will give the rotors pitch and will start to blow downward and create thrust and the heli will start to lift off, the more you push it upwards, the more thrust is created and the faster and higher the heli will travel...hope all of that helps, sorry my comments are so long, just trying to help you the best i can
and pulling back on the right stick will make the heli go backwards, moving the stick left and right will make the heli dip to the left and right and slid sideways left and right. hope these 2 comments helps you specmaster1...i have a blade cx2 its a 4 channel..its broke now so yea i cant fly very well yet lol but i love it and i love your vids too nightflyyer
@SpecMaster1 sorry this is so late but you are almost spot on...you prolly know it all by now though lol, but the left stick is correct...up and down controls throttle which makes it go up and down and fly faster or slower...and if its a 6 channel 3d heli it also controls the pitch of the main rotor blades...more pitch aka (twisting of the blades) creates more lift and less pitch eguals less lift or more and less wind from the rotors...and left stick left and right points the nose of the heli to
@SpecMaster1 the left and right...and the right stick up and down controls cyclic making the heli fly foward and backward...and left and right on the right stick makes it slide sideways left and right, i havnt flown my heli in a while but they are extremely fun once you learn it but also really challenging and can be expensive, i would suggest starting with a small 4 channel coaxial, like the blade cx2 or 3 then work your way up and using a simulator if possible
Dave as always your video's are informative and extremely helpfull. I will try to find the clearview sim down here in Australia and as you say practice, practice, practice.
Thanks Dave that was great and the information you provided will help me so much i will be learning to fly my heli off this video i will keep you posted and post a response video so others can see how well it works.....AWESOME job keep up the good work..
Great vid as always, 2 things I wanna mention, one thing that is great to add to the first "hover lesson" is to try to hover the heli with the tail facing towards, left, right and away from you, alot harder to hover with the tail facing away from you.
And the other thing is for all of you beginners out there, even if you master flying your heli in the sim it's way harder in real life, nervs and gravity are your worst enemy, and the fysics are sadly not even remotely the same. Instructor recomended
this is perfect. a all in one video to getting started with heli. This is just what i needed. now i think i might go ahead and get me a a coaxi to learn with .. Great stuff. 5 stars friend
love the video love the tips I'm still practicing everyday on my simulator tite hovering and pin point landings are still very frustrating for me i do better in the sim because i don't panic and worry about destroying my machine like i do in real life lol but hey ill get it down one of these days.for now i just practice some hovers and lil short circles in real if i panic i just set her down and take a breather lol
Dave is right, don't fly if you can't hover 100% on the sim. I spent many thousands of hours on the sim before flying. I have a Blade 400 3D, HBCP2, Typhoon 2 3D, Pitts Bipe, and and an F-35 EDF and I have NEVER crashed. I was self taught (minus watching Dave and his 9 heli tips). Its all discipline. If you can't do it on the sim, CONSISTENTLY, then you will not do it in real life. Flying heli's is not as expensive if you do your homework! Great vid as always!!!!
This is a great video thank you. I actually am starting out this way to. I have that exact same control and clear view I got. I have moved onto another flying sim called aerofly it's really good also. Also have tried realfly. I love them all and so far i haven't moved onto the real thing.
Dave, you were lucky to have your intructor. Now we are lucky to have you !
I've been watching your videos way before I even got my first coaxial. Now I'm in singlerotors, in begining, but I can say the progress hasn't been as painful as it has been for some, and I belive biggest reason is having your videos and guides as a support !!!
The bigger the heli, often the better, i started out on a blade400, after flying on sims on/off for 3 years (at friends house, demoshows etc.) realflight is way easier than real life, you are mot nervous and it doesent affect you mentally at all, real life is very much harder, i way that from my own experience. You will crash, i die, but so what $70 for å crash is nothing. An msr is harder to fly ås it is tiny, get å 50 nitro if you really are in for it ;)
Nice tutorial mr. herbert. that is going to help me a lot when i start flying more complicated rc heli modles. you make everything look much easier than it really is but i guess that is from years and years of practice. anyway nice video as usual.
you get two short cuts, clearview and clearview1 and if you start clearview1 it works LOT faster. Java didn't work on my comp first, but after latest updates or something, it works great now. Same goes to Heli-X, now it works too.
A truly great video, nicely done, explained, good quality nice and calm,!
PERFECT this video is ideal for me, i just learned to hover my belt cp and now i can try to fly side to side, (indoors, because the weather is crap here)
i have a software thing for you if you ever need to record applications, it's called FRAPS and it records the things that you are doing, it's real good too, it's what i use for my video game videos
great video. I myself hold the sticks opposite though. just because I dont want my thumb slipping off the cyclic . and I also learned that way. If I were to switch... there would most likely be a crash. great video again and five stars. love the tips and keep up the great work.
Thank you for the video.

5. Left and right slides, forward and back slides (optionally add stationary slow pirouettes here in both directions)
6. Upright figure 8 circuits
7. Inverted tail in hover
8. Inverted nose in hover
9. Inverted left and right side in hover
10. Backwards upright figure 8's
11. Forward inverted figure 8's
12. Backward inverted figure 8's
(Always have a bailout plan, know which way to add collective upright or inverted)
Thanks for taking the time to make helpful videos...

the Left stick controls: when moving up and down, it controls the throttle; when moving left and right, it controls the rotation (yaw).

1. You used the word cylic (or something like that), what does that mean?

i have a software thing for you if you ever need to record applications, it's called FRAPS and it records the things that you are doing, it's real good too, it's what i use for my video game videos

great video. I myself hold the sticks opposite though. just because I dont want my thumb slipping off the cyclic . and I also learned that way. If I were to switch... there would most likely be a crash. great video again and five stars. love the tips and keep up the great work.
