  • @GodofAnotherWorId yeaapp got it :D i just heard it from some film if i remember :P

  • @GodofAnotherWorId what's the name of the song ??? sooo familiar but i cant think of its name

  • What's the song name? PLEASE :D

    I LOVE LINUX!

  • @JesusLovesHim

Oasis - Wonderwall. (by Philarmonic Orchestra)

  • I Love Os X , Love Linux and Love the song :) but hate Microsoft

  • I love gentoo linux :)

  • I'll restate my argument again.

I'm not saying Ubuntu is a piece of crap. I'm saying the end product you get with Gentoo is better. Yes it requires more work, yes it requires more time. But the Operating System you get in the end will run faster in general. It is worth the time IF you want a faster OS.

If you just want it to "work", then it probably doesn't matter. Unless you require a setup that Ubuntu doesn't provide (ie: if you require a different kernel, older or newer).

  • @kaega2 And all I am saying is that the boost you get from gentoo is trivial, especially compared to the extra time is requires.

  • "Compiling is also a long process for normal programs...yet how much faster or smaller does it really make things? Not enough to make much of a difference at all in my opinion."

Again supporting my argument that you're just guessing, giving your opinion. Makes me believe you've only compiled "normal programs", which is where compiling is least effective. For someone who seems so impatient, have you really compiled your own OS? More likely you stated you have to win an argument.

  • @kaega2 Wow you are seriously immature. I don't agree with you therefor I must be lying?

And again with this guessing shit?? Really???? I stated how much of a difference it makes....because I know.... and you take that to mean I don't know....wow....English must not be your first language. "Guessing" is not the same word as "opinion". If you can't even understand simple sentences like that I can understand why you are having such a hard time arguing your case. Your post is a total cop-out.

  • For those of your watching this debate, Nextstopearth isn't completely wrong. But it makes it sound like you're going to do several times more work to get a performance boost that's not noticeable. And although it does take several hours to install Gentoo, most of that time the computer is doing it's own thing, and you can go do something else. Hell, you can even use your computer while in the middle of the install (ie: listen to music, browse the internet)

  • I want my linux back so I can change my background :(

  • I wish I had more room to comment :(

  • Oasis - wonderwall :D

  • What do you think about this ? - I need your feedback…

    youtube.com/watch?v=48saXiJE9Mg

  • I've just finishing building my custom kernel in Gentoo. What a mission! Next job is to emerge KDE, etc. Hopefully it will be as quick or quicker than my Mint partition otherwise it'll get the chop and will try Arch again. Arch gave me NVIDIA issues last time I tried it though (pacman -syu broke it)

  • can someone tell me the songname ?

its awesome but i forgot it :/

  • @IEFMC wonderwall

  • I love the instrumental version of this song! Where did u get it?

  • i want the image you have for your desktop, do you still have it? can you upload it for me please? or can you provide the source link. ty.

    ps, nothing beats gnome.

  • im more of a linux mint 9 use but gentoo looks nice

  • Ubuntu and Gentoo doesn't the same. I've used Ubuntu for 2 years. But I want to have much more control over the system. I am using notify-osd, grub2 and other "cool" stuff in gentoo and I feel no difficulties using them. But both are great distributions. Gentoo brings me an opportunity to change everything. Ubuntu is not so elegant inside as Gentoo. So my choice is Gentoo ;)

  • Why would you use something like gentoo when you could use something like ubuntu that has all of this stuff either out of the box or ready to install from a repo? Is it just curiosity?

  • @Nextstopearth Why would you use something like Ubuntu which comes preinstalled with a bunch of crap that you have to uninstall, then re-configure to your liking when you could just install and configure things exactly as you want from Gentoo's repo?

  • @Ormaaj You DON'T have to uninstall things. And if you did, it is as quick as can be. However with something like gentoo, after you finish the project of installing it(as opposed to a distro that automates all that tedium), you would have to set up lots of stuff that would have already been done on something like ubuntu. I like them both, I was just wondering what benefit people see for their extra effort on gentoo

  • @Nextstopearth The benefit is optimization. Ubuntu will never run as efficiently as Gentoo. The reason being when you compile code you can specify it to your hardware.

When you use Ubuntu, the OS and programs are compiled with ALL supported features. This is done because the distributor has no way of telling what hardware you're using when they precompile the OS.

Pre-compiled programs are bloated and take up more resources than is needed. This is the true reason you use Gentoo.

  • @kaega2 You can still compile programs for ubuntu if you so choose. Compiling is also a long process for normal programs...yet how much faster or smaller does it really make things? Not enough to make much of a difference at all in my opinion. Maybe gentoo runs faster than ubuntu....but again....not so that it would ever make much difference to me. Certainly not worth the trouble. Thats just my opinion.

  • @Nextstopearth Comparing compiling a program to compiling an entire OS is like comparing a user that installs their own video card to a user who builds their own computer.

If you compile just a few programs, but not the OS those programs run on? You're not going to get much of an increase. Compile the hundreds of thousands of programs that are always running on your computer, makes a BIG difference. And the "trouble" you encounter depends only on your skill, and doesn't change the end product.

  • @kaega2 I wasn't comparing them, you brought up both programs and OS...

And who the hell is going to sit around compiling hundreds of thousands of programs? Do you realize how long that would take? And that is the "trouble" I was talking about....time. I don't care how skillful you are, that shit takes time whether you fuck up or not. Time that doesn't need to be wasted.

  • @Nextstopearth I will say lastly, you don't compile all those programs individually. Most of them are compiles in a string automatically. So you would choose to compile one program, and the dependancies (which will also be compiles) would come up.

Everything you do changed, or installed different. And just like how Ubuntu can compile a program if you want, Gentoo can install a Binary package if you want. I typically do this with OpenOffice.

  • @Nextstopearth A great example of this is your linux kernel. An OS kernel is always fully loaded into memory. The bigger your kernel, the more memory your kernel takes up. Ubuntu supports a wide range of features in the kernel, including: Firewire, LTP, dial up modems, etc... All those things increase the memory taken from the kernel alone, even if you don't use them! In Gentoo if you don't use the firewire ports, or don't have Firewire ports, you can just remove them from the kernel.

  • @kaega2 That sounds like something that may have mattered in the 80's or early 90's when memory was scarce. But today when most even cheap computers have several gigabytes of memory, counting the kilobytes in your kernel is not worth your time.

  • @Nextstopearth Lol, you're just guessing. I'm speaking from the point of view of someone who has used both OS's. The speed is quite a difference. Maybe when you're just viewing e-mail and surfing youtube you don't need that extra speed. But when you actually use your computer the time you make up far outweighs the time you took to install it.

And you did compare them. You said "You can still compile programs in Ubuntu" in response to my comment on precompiled OS's.

  • @kaega2 First of all...that wasn't a comparison... like I already mentioned, you brought them both up, so I addressed both. I was talking about compiling programs on both OSs, I have no idea how you got from that a comparison of program and OS compilations.

You really shouldn't make immature assumptions and accusations. I have used both operating systems and plenty of other similar ones, compiled their kernels and programs for them. Just saying "Lol you're just guessing" doesn't help your case

  • @Nextstopearth Dude, I said Gentoo was better because you can compile the OS, and you said "You can still compile programs in Ubuntu". You state this in response to me saying the OS is better because it is compiled on your machine, as if being able to compile your individual programs makes it all better. You compared compiling an OS to compile some programs. If you weren't making that comparison, what was the point of that sentence. So you're saying it wasn't a comparison and you agree?

  • @kaega2 Obviously you don't agree, and that sentence was to state the "same" function was in Gentoo in comparison. Notice that word there, 'comparison'.

The reason I say you are just guessing is because of the way you word things. Such as "That sounds like"; that right there tells everyone you don't really know, that's just your interpretation of what you think you know.

  • @kaega2 Wow. Your exact quote

"When you use Ubuntu, the OS and PROGRAMS are compiled with.... "

And saying you can compile things on ubuntu isn't a comparison, it is a fact.

And me saying "it sounds like" means it sounds like one of the many things that would have mattered then....because it does...not because I don't really know if it does..but because I know that it does..So you couldn't have gotten that more wrong.

You can compile ubuntu on your machine anyway so your point there is moot.

  • omg that fucking rules!!!! :DDDD

  • Gentoo is amazing! :)

  • @TheHornyDevill Gentoo is too much work for not enough boost in performance. Just use something like Arch Linux. Arch is much better.

  • @67576856666478964567 Yes it is to much work, and that is why i use sabayon :) also gentoo has much better performance than arch!

  • @TheHornyDevill

Gentoo is only faster than Arch if you have a piece of shit computer with old hardware. To the naked eye, Arch is just as fast as Gentoo and is less hassle. Gentoo is not worth the effort and is only for Linux hobbyists and not general computer enthusiasts, if that makes sense.

Gentoo is becoming more and more obsolete as hardware technology increases.

  • @67576856666478964567

Gentoo is for those who wants to have the most flexible tools working with OS. I am not absolutely for one distributive. May be I'll switch in the next to Arch or Sabayon or Ubuntu O_O.

But for now Gentoo gives me all I need. I have no problems with it for 1 year. I am spending max 1 hour a week to check my gentoo. I am using ~x86 (whole 1 year), the latest ck-sources (.config isn't changed for 3-4 months). I have bluetooth, wi-fi and other beauties and feel no problems

  • @67576856666478964567 hey what you said makes me think quite a bit. I wanted to eventually graduate to Gentoo....It's a long way because i've been using ubuntu for only a year. The only other distro i'm extremely interested in is Arch. Anyway, maybe gentoo is not worth my time unless i'm a hobbyist like you said. I still would like enough control of my OS though.

  • Gentoo and Arch are similar in many ways. As hardware gets better, compilation from source becomes less of an issue thus eliminating essentially the only reason one might want to avoid Gentoo. I use Gentoo because it's so hassle-free to maintain and customize. Unless you need to configure a kernel for completely new hardware, installing is very fast and versatile. You can put it together in a chroot from an existing install, tar it up, and copy it over to a new machine in no time.

  • @67576856666478964567 Do you still have to manage dependencies manually on arch??

  • @Nextstopearth

LOL, no. Gentoo still does this? Jesus Christ, this isn't 1999.

  • @67576856666478964567 No, Gentoo does not.

  • ive installed arch which wasnt that hard, but ive always had problems with gentoo which sucks because i want to try it out, ill try it again but i plan on migrating to sabayon next :P btw i love the instrumental version of wonderwall.

  • I'll recommend you to start with Ubuntu and then to choose something another.

  • hey i want to switch to linux, can you recomend me witch one should i switch too.

  • @777heyman Linux Mint or Ubuntu for new Linux users.

  • amazing!!!!

  • i'm trying to install gentoo on mac OS. It's not easy for me. Any suggestions. or can I just install it on VMware? How to do that?

  • @donedonedoneding Gentoo is not for newbie and it's hard to install. Try Mandriva or Yellow Dog. And for run on Vmware, try BIG LINUX or (K)Ubuntu.

  • i'm trying to install gentoo on mac OS. It's not easy for me. Any suggestions. or can I just install it on VMware? How to do that?

  • Nice viedo.

  • I have a question. Do games for Windows OS work on Linux? Please reply.

  • if you have wine, they can work.

  • song?

  • wonderwall by oasis. instrumental only

  • does this work fro old slow pcs

  • dude I have to say, you have a really nice desktop, I'm jealous.

  • 3:57 - 4:04

what is this effect and where it is ?? i see it for the first time, its great...

    please ???

  • Alt+Tab

  • Comment removed

  • No! It's goruping window effect!

  • Is Gentoo Linux for experts on linux?

  • I'd like to say that Gentoo is for those who wants to have max rights and control of your system. There is no special distro for experts as I know. There are experts in each distro community. :) I know one man using Mandriva and he knows a lot about linux. So, experts are presented in each community. :)

  • thanks

  • @DragonionS For experts is Gentoo minimal without gnome or KDE....Or Backtrack linux :) Gentoo is Linux Windows 7 ultimate :)

  • uhuhu I love gentoo sooooo much x3

but for new users I would recommend getting ubuntu first.

On gentoo you gotta compile everything by yourself which may be troublesome to new users.

  • So you cant do .deb?

  • @LoveandEqualityToAll

    Nope :)

    cd ~/directory

    ./configure

    make

    make install

  • Thank you :)

  • I love gentoo.

  • woot instrumental of wonderwall

  • im using linux mint 8 and i think its better than windows xp which is what i had on my computer a few days ago

  • yah, im still on windows, cause linux so hard to me :( why its all on commands? i dont have time to learn them :( im not geek, i just would like to use linux instead of windows, i work with graphics apps, linux would be ok for me, cause i tired of getting viruses and system bugs in windows.

  • Windows and linux are different in their concept and the user experience differs a lot.

But I'll give you advice to try Ubuntu, OpenSuSe or Mandriva. A lot of people like to use them. :)

I am not only for Gentoo. I am for the most suited way for each person. Everyone chooses the most useful for him.

I've installed on one of partitions new Ubuntu 9.10 and got everything working great - 3d video, wifi and so on. ))

  • thanx for reply, i installed ubuntu carmic , its verry ok about then compiz fusion, i exided how stable it is. but for some reason, higher quality video files for me plays slower at full screen as in windows. why its like that? can that be fixed easy somehow?

  • Try to enable Xv mode. Then the perfomance of video should be the same or similar as in Windows.

In SMPlayer or similar program go to preferences and set video output through Xv.

Then in Compiz options enable Video playback support. It should help you. :)

  • try ubuntu, im simple student and i founded linux easyer than windows, everything is simple and clear, just take time to get use to, about the commands - you dont need to know them cuz you can simply copy paste all of them from the web :) just dont believe in what win fanatics say... simply try to use it more often and you will stick to linux :) everyone who try them for longer time fall in love with them

  • thanx, im using now ubuntu for a while, i customized, installed cairo-dock, compiz manager, and linux now very beautiful, just i still have 2 things that dont let me enjoy linux as good as windows, 1 - video players lags little, video shows sometimes by short freezes, and: 2 - sound quality is lower then windows, you see in windows i use srs wow sound filter that clears sound for better quality, and i would love to have same clear sound in linux :) cant you help me with this?

  • Video lags are connected with video drivers. :) You can have ATI, Nvidia or something else. If you have some questions about Ubuntu you can ask on ubuntu forum and you'll get help from hundreds of Ubuntu users. :) There are a lot of manuals. Every problem is somewhat specific.

  • Try Linux Mint 7 or 8.

It has flash installed out of the box etc... I didn't need to go into the terminal once while using Linux Mint.

And even if you have to use the Terminal, it's not that hard. When using Ubuntu, I needed to install some stuff... I checked forums and just copy pasted commands. Worked like a charm.

Try Linux Mint, you might like it a lot.

  • YES!

  • Thanks. I am preparing new movie. :) If there will be enough free time it will be soon. :)

  • Fucking awesome!!!!! I use Gentoo too, but I haven't enough patience to build something like that. You rule, dude.

  • So...Whats the difference between this and ubuntu?

  • If you are asking about differences between Gentoo and Ubuntu - search in Google about emerge, source-based distros, speed and total free in working with linux in Gentoo. (about Ubuntu I think you are already confident).

On my video I've showed what I've made with my Gentoo. But for now it is old. :) I have configured a lot of new things.

  • Sure! Linux can be run on all Mac :)

  • can linux run on mac?

  • Yes it can. Just check the forums to see if your Mac model is well supported.

  • Aaaah sweet!,

Atm I'm installing gnome on gentoo kernel 2.6.30-r6

The desktop looks awesome though...very nice :)

  • Thanks! :) I'll make soon a new video. :)

  • I want the background and music as well!

  • the usual questions "Hey what's the title of the background music?" =)

another, "Hey where can I get that wallpaper?"

  • Now I can't tell it. Open compiz-fusion configuration manager and read, test, try and you'll find something special for yourself. :)

  • what's ur configuration ? video poster

  • Офегительно ))

  • Спасибо! :-) Я выложу еще один ролик с новым видением так сказать))

  • In Linux some people enjoy Openbox or Awesome WM etc and I am using sometimes Awesome wm too. :) So, it is better to have more then less ;) We can choose what we need and thats great!

  • I am using such effects, as making the windows transparent to see the information from the other window; I am using grouping and tabbing of the windows because it is very useful sometimes. I also enjoy wobby windows because it looks for me much better than the standart view.

Fire and water effects are not useful and take 30% of CPU power and they are really useless. For real using there are many nice effects and i am sure I am not alone with this idea.

But linux is the country of oppotunities

  • This is impressive!

But do you really need this graphical rubbish?

The only thing you can really use is the switching between workspaces. The rest is absolutely useless!

  • whats the difference between ubuntu and gentoo?

  • Gentoo is source based and flexible distro.

  • Beautiful video...

Could you tell me the name of the background of the wood wall that appears when you use the cube pluggin??

    Thkx...

  • It doesn't matter to follow Mac style or not. The only thing I've took from Mac idea - dock. But it is comfortable for me.

I have my linux without reinstallation for 6 month. The problem is in the person who is installing the Gentoo. If you are looking for easy way like Windows XP - go to Ubuntu or Mandriva or openSuSe. Gentoo is for those who knows what they want. :)

Besides, for now I am not using AWN or Cairo-dock and I've switched to KDE 4. :) It is not so critical what DE to use...

  • im not sure what c# (c sharp) but i suppose you mean c++ which you can use on all linux distros but not to compile to the kernel as c++ is for windows... fag

  • NO.

    C# != C++

C# is a programming language of the real world, like java and C++.

Linux is not the real world. everyone runs windows.

  • wake up to the real world already!

  • I have it's called windows.

  • And why you make it look like a Mac?, i've been trying to look for a good Gentoo video, and find one and looks like mac.

  • Thanks!

  • Great Video :)

  • :) There really a lot of features but I showed only those I use every day. :)

  • Nice video. Where are the rest? ;)

  • That's Wonderwall. The song of Oasis but in my video I used The Royal Philarmonic Orchestra instrumental version. ;)

    P.S. Thanks for comment!

  • dang this looks so awesome, great vid. btw whats the name of this song?

  • what theme/backgrounds are you using?

  • Thanks :)

  • Great video! Thumbs up!

  • good stuff, seems quite polished :) also, gotta admit you got a good taste for colors and design :)

nado i mne tak poprobovat', prikolnoe delo :D

  • Do you mean Compiz-Fusion effects or video editor's effects? :)

  • It is realy amazing!

This moving windows, and desktop spesial effects is realy cool.

Like drops of rain, and text in fire, wwooow!

    Soundtrack is rockZ too!

Let Vista, or some XP's effects kissed GNU\linux in his powerful ass ->> (_!_)
