what is the point of doing a 'review' if you don't know the first thing about the product - just clicking through the interface and describing what you see is not a review
@Linux4UnMe Well - maybe knowing a little about the product you're reviewing? Giving some specific details? Why someone would use it? What alternatives are there? What makes this better/worse? All the time being entertaining while doing so.
@ajw10800 "a little about the product" "Giving some specific details" "Why someone would use it" "What makes this better/worse" "All the time being entertaining"
I think you've just described all the videos Linux4UnMe has posted on YouTube.
@farturas81 If it's a 32 bit laptop, I recommend checking out Zorin OS Lite - it's an LXDE environment designed to be lightweight, and fast. It can mimic the look of Windows 2000 or Mac OSX.
@animefreak873 Sure. First, what is your current operating system? Is it Mac or Windows? Are you using Wubi Installer? Oh, and is it a very old computer?
@animefreak873 There could be something wrong with the installer file on the CD...when you put the CD in it should say "Scan CD" Scan it.
If that doesn't work go to Google and type in Wubi. When Wubi loads it will show options. The default is Ubuntu, uncheck that and click Xubuntu. You should be good then.
i switched from Windows to Ubuntu when 9.10 Karmic Koala came out and i loved and still love that release, but since it's no longer supported for some time already i've decided to try the new Unity, cuz it looked really nice but in my point of view they just found out how to make a simple thing complicated, i haven't been using ubuntu that long but in my opinion the Unity is in the ease of use term step back, no more Ubuntu, welcome Xubuntu
@Linux4UnMe i have tried Xubuntu yesterday and i was really suprised by the release... it's intuitive, easy to use, clear and meanwhile still nice to look at, i was hesitating about installing the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS but Xubuntu won :)
I like GNOME2 . I don't really like GNOME3, KDE, Unity , LXDE, XFCE, or any other Desktop environment . Sad they are killing GNOME2 :( Linus Torvalds says Gnome 3 is an "Unholy mess." Funny thing is I think GNOME3 is better than Unity .
@Linux4UnMe Well it said I need to install video drivers to enjoy all Unix has to offer, and I have but I see no difference. Hehe I fucked up my PC so hard, get this, after installing Xubuntu my Vista started working badly, so i decided to re install it, although my disk is not boot, so i started booting from what Vista still could run but it got stuck on 20% so I canceled it and after canceling I manually closed PC with a button, and now it asks for a key which I don't have any solution please?
@ProfessionalGam3rz: The thing about dual-booting with Windows and Linux is that Windows will wipe out the Linux bootloader. The way I go about dual-booting is to install Windows first and then install Linux. The Linux bootloader overwrites the MBR and the windows installation is (usually) detected by GRUB (bootloader). If you need anymore help feel free to message me. Hope this helps.
@LTS1287 so what u r saying is that if that if Windows is installed first and then u install linux GRUB will take over the Master Boot Record right? And if you install linux first and then Windows the MBR takes over GRUB right?
@Ferrari512codalunga: Basically, yes. Whichever OS installs last will be the last to write to the MBR. You can, however, continue using the windows bootloader to boot up linux. You don't have to use GRUB. I would recommend using GRUB, though.
@Ferrari512codalunga: That's exactly right. Remember that dual booting isn't the only option. You have the option of running one or the other in a virtual machine. You will see performance hits, though.
Just so you folks no, DO NOT install XFCE on Ubuntu. Or anything on ubuntu. Just do the actually xubuntu install. Otherwise you'll have glitches out the ass.
Anyway I'm gonna switch to Xubuntu next LTS release, mainly because Gnome 3(both unity and shell) are just shitty. Yes they are 'good' and fast and I wouldnt mind having them installed along side something else, but having them forced on us is a major turn off for me as I like classic desktops. XFCE is closest to gnome 2 so I picked it
I am switching to because Ubuntu are forcing Unity on its uses. I was a Ubuntu user for 4 years and last two stable releases were spot on but now they just want to create something that looks likes a Phone/tablet OS and don't even get me started on that dock on the left hand side they are forcing on us users. I think Unity is going to backfire on them. Xubuntu looks good and yes Gnome 2 rocked.
unity has the right idea with the vertical screenspace saving , layout designed around widescreen monitors. The way it handles maximize with indicator, title and menubar integrated is brilliant .
the dock concept started on the side (NeXT). its' the rightful place. I have a Mac and have done the same. on the mac the've made a seperate mode for fullscreen apps, but the efficient maximize means you get similar benefit across all programs.
@MrStephen182 - agree there, i frequently use a lighter setup on slow machines for linux, e.g fluxbox, so i'll aree with you it should be possible to toggle the dock. And actually I'm going back to the old taskbar +desktop thumbnails idea too. I think Unity's defaults are still good, he user who wants something more specific can easily move to it.
Ah OK, I didn't know that. I'm using PClinuxOS LXDE at the moment. I only briefly tried Ubuntu 10.04, 11.04 and 11.10. I'm totally new in the world of Linux, but I did knew about the session change :)
i am attempting to put this on a old computer that i have that had windows 95 on it and it woulnt boot a live cd (duh) and i am attempting to install it with the alternate installer, idk if it will work it only has 64MB of RAM, and a 500MHz cpu
@LlednarWerdna if it does boot at all it will run like shit, go with lubuntu, its still not going to be great but i had it running on a win 98 era laptop. a slower P III but more ram, idealed about 70-80mb ram so you'll be hitting the swap to do anything.
Thank you for the review. I like XFCE, however, thunar hangs when there are multiple NTFS drives, at least in my case. I've tried it with Arch Linux only to find the same thing. Something to do with gvfs, gdm or xdm + thunar for which I haven't found a solution.
"zoo buntu"...I love it. But if you want to put it on a machine with, say 733mhz, 256mb...you should load xubuntu on a faster machine, then remove the hard drive and put it in the lower specs machine. Course, you'll have to do that again every 6 months...I was unable to "upgrade" my lower specs machine any other way.
not sure myself... i'm only an occasional user of xfce... maybe somebody else can answer that question better than me... I know lxde is super smooth like you said though :)
The Dock is actually not default on normal Xfce Installs and the dock that's showing up is just the Xfce panel with a few tweaks so that's why it's not as feature packed and doesn't work in some ways.
I put this on my web box and i love it. The Xfce is much better. I seems to run just as smooth as lubuntu to me. I like the like the task manager and the dock combo myself. I like have the regular task manager so i know what's open
@iwanteveryting I'm not talking about Canocical. More about the productive linux user. I'm actually glad they are trying to grab more of the main stream market. I hope they succeed.
