  • From left to right: David Marks, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Mike Love and Brian Wilson. A super band.

  • I love them ♥ ♥ ♥

  • the greatest group

  • David was brought in as Al Jardine's replacement while he was in dental school

  • In the new book The Lost Beach Boy it says that this was an appearance on the Red Skelton show, and they were forced to wear "sailor suits". Murry Wilson also suggested that they choose an "adult" song for their second number so they could capture that audience segment also.

  • Very cool!

  • Much like Pete Best, It's never been clear about David's departure from the group. Some say he left after a fallout with Murry Wilson,(first manager and father of 3 founding memebers). Others say his folks took him out because he was falling behind in his schoolwork. There's even a story that the others fired David because he was too charming with the girls and hogging all thier attention.hmmm! but unlike Best, Marks has made good amends with his former bandmates and sometimes plays with them.

  • In an interview, David Marks said that he and Murry Wilson didn't get along. He said he didn't think he should have to carry his own equipment, which was a rule in the band. There was a story about Pete Best being fired from The Beatles because he was good-looking and the others were jealous of the attention he got from girls. But Sir George Martin said Best was fired because he couldn't keep a good beat, and would slow down and speed up too much--in other words, that he was a lousy drummer.

  • I guess I should not be surprised. The Beach Boys are great and this video proves that.

  • David Marks' post-BBs material with The Marksmen is actually quite good. He and Pete Best have a lot in common.

  • This clip does a great job of showing the two roots of the Beach Boys: 1950s rock 'n roll (e.g., Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry), sure, but also the 1950s men's singing groups, specifically the 4 Freshmen and the Hi-Los, singing jazz standards, of which Things We Did Last Summer is a beautiful example. The tune is by a real giant: Jules Styne.

  • Love those Beach Boys!!! FAR OUT!!

  • bring back the 60's and those beach songs including Beach Boys and Jan and Dean. The days when Ward Pally Austin would broadcast the old 2UW from the northern beaches of Sydney. Coca Cola beach balls, the old National transister radio. Magic days so my sister recalls.

  • 3.38 he has a camel toe haha

  • i like the beach boys, the thing that gets me about them is there music is fun and it jus seems like mates pissing about making music and having a laugh which is what it should be about

  • oh my gosh people really dance like the Peanut kids and snoopy. wow

  • JAN AND DEAN both could surf

  • From what I understand, David Marks was TOLD to quit. He was far too young to really handle touring and basically acted like a complete assole the entire tour, I guess like most young kids would fresh from their parents house, thrown out into the world, with little supervision. David Marks was still a year younger even than Dennis, and acted like a real spoiled jerk. It was a great relief to be rid of him. Al quit dental school and returned to the group. Good thing.

  • In his Book Brian Wilson said that he was planning to Fire David Marks and had secretly called Al Jardine from the Road to ask him to rejoin. When David & Murray Wilson (Brian's, Carl's & Dennnis's Father & Manager), kept harassing David, he said "You'd like for me to quit, wouldn't you!" and Murray said: "You heard him say it, he quit!" Yet unlike Pete Best who came out of The Beatles with nothing, David came out of it with something, in the 1980's he got Royalties of $300.000.00 Per Year.

  • Boy, they do a heck of a job at singing 4 Freshmen style.

  • It's amazing how sometimes he sings and his lips barely move. Also, I like the sort of spastic wiggly guy in the very beginning.

  • nice moves mike..

also never seen brian so happy lol

  • that singer looks like my grandfather and the singer of the who in the same person ajaja

  • Can someone please name them left to right? Thanks.

  • David Marks. Carl Wilson. Dennis Wilson. Mike Love. Brian Wilson.

  • love it <3

  • What a time, what a warm and wonderful time it was. How could it have gone so fast? I watched they guys do this, and they were sooo cool! We all wanted to be Dennis, and to sing like Brian. Wolfsky9

  • Amazing--and none of the guys but Dennis could actually surf!

But Jan & Dean did ride skateboards on "The T.A.M.I. Show," so we know they could, at least, "sidewalk surf."

My guess is Dick Dale did surf. I don't know about The Ventures, but I'd guess some of them. What do you think?

Me, I'm like Brian--I'll take a backyard swimming pool or just listen to surf music "in my room." Especially nowadays, with all the crap in the ocean (syringes, etc.) & seemingly-braver sharks coming inland more.

  • Actually, looking at them, except Dennis they are all either too skinny (Mike Love & Al Jardine) or incredibly out of shape--not at all the image of well-toned surfers. I suspect Brian and Carl were going more for the "Moby Dick" image.

But Glen Campbell and Bruce Johnston could have been surfers.

  • Actually, Al Jardine isn't in this clip--I don't know who the guy on the left is? This looks to me like Carl, Dennis, Mike and Bruce Johnston, with some other fill-in player, no Brian either.

Does anyone know who is the guy on the left?

  • The other guy is David Marks....he lived across the street from Brian, Carl and Dennis and was a good friend of Dennis Wilson. Al joined later, a good friend of Brian's, when David quit the group on tour in Philadelphia, that's when Al joined....David has a website...google "David Marks"....

  • David marks

  • Brian IS in the video. He's on the right, playing bass. From left to right: David Marks, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Mike Love, Brian Wilson.

  • those PANTS are wild!

  • I'm 21 yrs old and someway, somehow i like the beach boys and their music...idk it just has a good vibration in their music u knoe......

  • Nice to see the original lineup. But, didn't Chuck Berry write the tune? Worth noting:even Bo Diddley had a surfing album. Mighty gnarly tubes on Lake Michigan for sure.

  • ¡Excelentes!

  • The Blind Guardian remake is pretty cool too ^^ has aproximately the same sounding to it

  • Still beautiful, still the best.

  • wow david marks playing guitar

  • Wow, they were SO young. Technology is crazy. I just saw Mike and Dave in person yesterday and here they are on youtube 45 years ago.

  • Did they have any idea how ridiculous they'd look in 5 years?

  • why wasn't dennis on drums?, lol, & i love "Things We Did Last Summer", so jazzy & the harmonys are the best.

  • shake mike! LoL

and where can i get those shoes? LoL..

    how cute are they?

  • ...love the pants

  • why does brian look so differnt?

  • young and thin.

  • Absolutely incredible, the trousers are so cool, but yet so funny.

    Beach Boys forever

  • AHHHHHH!!! CALIFORNIA!! OLE SCHOOL!

  • Amazing how they were able to reproduce the exact same take found on the record! ;)

  • wheres the short guy al jardine,,,whos the dude on the left ,,hes not a beach boy

  • Check out "The Lost Beach Boy," a new book about David Marks who was an original member of the Beach Boys for the first few years. the book is full of interesting stories even the most ardent of BB fans has not heard!

  • So great !!!

  • didn't the marksmen do some surfing instrumental stuff?

  • Hey gazwsx12369, I think you made your point about Mike Love, you may be right you may be wrong, but its time to let it go my friend.

  • Sweet!

  • Gosh guys can't you see Mike Love does not have an ounce of talent in him! Why does he own the Beach Boys name now??? Yikes I pity youngsters who watch Beach Boys and think Mike Love's Beach Boys is The Beach Boys, hehehe. Would you guys believe he even brought in his son to join?? And I almost forgot, BRIAN WILSON is a Musical GOD!!!!

  • the dancing is just...

  • When I first watched this, I was in hysterics watching Mike move! He looks like what I would imagine a constipated Monkey would look like!! And their clothes... Those pants are too short to be pants and too long to be 3/4 pants

  • Goddamn they're young here

  • if u think they look young here just watch surfin safari one mans challange

  • wow thats dennis in the middle he looks so awkward there just standing and he doesnt look like he is enjoying himself but great song i like both but surfin usa is my favorite out of the 2 thanks for posting this though there r not many videos with David in them but i like al better but still thanks...

  • The Capitol engineer pulled down the fader so fast on that guitar solo and it bothered me my entire life! This year I got access to Capitol in Hollywood, and I mentioned it to them personally. I'm quite anal..

  • I saddens to see one of the founding members of the The Beach Boys, David Marks, not get the credit he deserved. David played on their first six albums, where his pictures on the album covers remain, yet received no gold records, and was not on the stage when the group was inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. No offense to Al Jardine, but to me, the original Beach Boys will always be Brian, Carl, Dennis, Mike, and David.

  • i just read about this performance in the new and GREAT book about David Marks. Although they had done some local and regional TV shows this was their first National show i believe from the Red Skeleton show. David Marks is Cool!!! What a great rhythm player too. He never got his due back then but this new book sets the record straight. Welcome back David.

  • For a time, both Jardine and David Marks toured with the Beach Boys, but continuing friction between Marks and Murray caused David to quit the band. He would go on to form his own group, David Marks and The Marksmen, which lasted only about a year before he joined Casey Kasem's group, Band Without A Name. Later, David worked as a studio musician with The Turtles before leaving show business.

I found this in on classicbandsdotcom.

  • Classic Beach Boys harmonizing. It hasn't happened again since! True talent.

  • Things We Did Last Summer !! A great performance!!!

  • Dennis looks weird just standing there like that.

  • the second song is great. perfect harmony!
