I think TTGL takes way more from Gaiking:Legend of DaikuuMaryu than any other anime - Gurren-Lagann looks like a repainted gaiking with extra accessories and the whole Dai-Gurren Brigade part feels a lot like the Gaiking anime as whole, with a giant robo-base even.

Most important, Gaiking did a giga drill breaker once.

And PS: G-Stone energy is a BLATANT homage to Getter Rays (G = Getter).

I base my opinions of "unbeatable" on 3 things:

"Power to Size Ratio" - Shin Emperor's powerful, sure, but make Shin Getter the same size and increase output equally, Emperor would get butt raped.

"Speed" - For unit and attacks. Ideon can wipe out Reality? Great. Sadly for it, it is slow in every facet and it's attacks take a while to charge. Easy food.

"Defense" - Includes Regeneration. If it can be ripped apart, it ain't winning crud if speed's low.

Putting these 3 things together, you end up with generally the same 3 guaranteed mechs, and one theoretical mech based on guesses based on Fan-theorem.

Shin Getter (Small but extremely powerful, can infinitely revive itself and it's pilots, quite fast too)

Getter-Powered Mazinkaiser (SRW F Final): Although slower, it's defensive and offensive capabilities are off scale. See Shin Getter.

Turn A Gundam: If you've seen the official info on it's full abilities, it literally is a God-tier mech, especially for it's size. Although it's weaponry is lacking in comparison, who cares when you can shoot a beam and it always hits the pilot of a suit and ignores the suit itself.

Genesic GaoGaiGar: This one's iffy depending on the theory that G-Stone is a Concentrated source of Getter Rays. If that's true, then GGGG has pilot-regeneration like the other 3.

There's a difference between ripping something off and paying homage to it. TTGL was a love song to the entire super robot genre; of course there are elements pulled from other shows, that's half the point.

TTGL is far from the best series ever or even the best super robot series ever but it's an excellent piece of work with an uplifting and extremely cathartic "we can do anything" message that I really wish more shows would emulate.

Also, that badguy was terrorizing the whole damn universe, and large enough that it could throw entire galaxies around like frisbees. Show a little respect for that, zengar would have trouble cutting that, since it's MUCH larger than his blade.

As for regular GL's drills VS Zengar's collosal blade...Unawesome beings can NOT comprehend the results.

The logistics of that would be tricky. Both sides are fueled by pure justice badassery. The winner would be the one who gets to be the "good guy", and the only time one side could even be called sort of evil is if we had Alpha Gaiden Sanger or Wodan involved. Which means Gurren Lagann would win.

But really, if they did meet, there's absolutely no way they wouldn't immediately recognize each other as heroes and team up to dispense some sword-drilling justice on a common foe.

Technically, even though his name is and always has been Sanger (with two dots over the A which I'm too lazy to figure out how to type), it is pronounced "Zenger" due to the way German phonetics work, hence why the Japanese say "Zengaa" (they've always pronounced "er" sounds as "aa"). His last name confuses me, though. Its official spelling is "Zonvolt", but it doesn't use German phonetics at all...
