Does anyone know of an address where I can write to Ms Grimes? I would love to send a letter or e mail to her either to her directly or through an agency. She did tell a very, scary ghost story that she said her grandfather told her as a child. I'd like to find out more. It was a creeper. Can anyone help?
This aired opposite "Star Trek"....so I guess in some alternate universe "Star Trek" was canceled after three episodes and audiences known as 'Grimmies' were treated years later to "The Tammy Grimes Motion Picture" and "Tammy Grimes - The Next Generation" .... ;)
@pretorious700 She had the most annoying voice on Earth, and of all people, CBS chose her to replace E.G. Marshall on CBS Radio Mystery Theater. I couldn't hear her, understand her, and HATED her.
2:15 -- How could the likes of George Axelrod, of ALL people, be involved in the creation of such piffle? Was 1966 a bad year for him, what with this and Lord Love a Duck?
Strange that Tammy Grimes became famous with this phony British accent. She was born in Massachusetts. Today, no star could get away with that. If someone was that phony they would be exposed and derided for it.
There is something about Tammy Grimes that grates on me. I know it's her voice, but she just doesn't seem to have what it takes to register a pulse in me. She replaced E.G. Marshall on CBS Radio Mystery Theater, and the show was soon to be canceled. There is something about her I just have a hard time with. Does anyone else feel this way?
It is interesting to see footage from shows that were on when I was a newborn. The obscure programs like this are more fun to watch than endless repeats of Lucy.
This show was only cancelled after three weeks, which was pretty unusual back then. Most shows back then were cancelled after thirteen weeks if they did'n't work out. Nowadays, they're yanked off the air after one or two episdes for the same reason.
Tammy Grimies is also the mother of Amanda Plummer, the actress. She was her daughter by Christopher Plummer of "The Sound of Music" fame.
Heavens to Murgatroid! I recall seeing an episode of this show as a kid of age 10 (in it, Tammy was able to get a jackpot each time she played a slot machine due to having a magnet in her purse - or some such silliness). Always thought Ms Grimes was a VERY attractive lady & talented actress. One can certainly see a resemblence in the daughter (Amanda) she had with her ex-husband, Christopher Plummer. THANKS for posting! But how or why did British Tammy have an American uncle & brother?
I meant to say her British accent doesn't match the American accents of her relatives on the show. I know she was born in Boston. Sorry about the confusion. THANKS for your comment. Too bad MGM didn't let Tammy recreate her original Broadway role in the movie version of "The Unsinkable Molly Brown".
Once The Tammy Grimes Show was cancelled, ABC needed a quick fix for the vacant timeslot, so they turned to a nighttime version of one of their most popular daytime game shows: The Dating Game. Dating's evening version proved to be much more successful than the four-week sitcom it replaced, so the network soon added a nighttime edition of The Newlywed Game to its prime-time schedule. Both games would have respectable runs in prime-time, and later in evening syndication.
You really want to talk irony, Tammy Grimes was first offered the part of Samantha in "Bewitched." (She turned it down because, as she said, "This girl has all these magic powers and she isn't stopping wars?")
@mergendeiler You got that right. All we seem to get on TV these days are trashy so-called reality shows or tired hour long crime shows. How many Law & Orders or CSI's do we need anyway? I find it very hard to find anything worthwhile to watch on TV anymore. The Middle was the only really good new TV show from last season.
When this show premiered in the Fall of 1966, ABC had decided to promote Tammy Grimes, Marlo Thomas (whose show "That Girl" had premiered that year) and Elizabeth Montgomery of "Bewitched" as "The Sweethearts of ABC" - Tammy Grimes' show lasted for four forgettable weeks, "That Girl" lasted five seasons, and Elizabeth Montgomery's "Bewitched" lasted from 1964 to 1972--
There's no nice way to say this, but I'm gonna say it anyway so I apologize in advance to whoever it offends: Even tho Tammy has an interesting voice, I always had a hard time looking at her. Good grief...what a huge nose!
Executive Producer William Dozier came out of this four week bomb pretty nicely--just a little while after this was yanked, he helped put together the wildly successful "Batman". Grimes' show, I've read, was scheduled against "My Three Sons" on CBS, and "Star Trek" on NBC.
Batman had already been on the air nine months when when "Tammy" came and went in September '66. Exec producer Dozier is almost always mentioned in connection with this show, but almost NEVER creator...George Axelrod?? This is the brainchild of the same man responsible for Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter and Seven Year Itch? I had no idea. I guess respect for Mr. Axelrod keeps his involvement with this fiasco on the dl.
You're rightt. Dozier, in early '66, PRIOR to Batman, wanted Grimes to star in "Bewitched" (then titled "I Married a Witch"). It was after she turned down the role that went to Liz Montgomery that he went on to the Batman project. Batman debuted in early '66 (January, I'm guessing?), while Grimes' show didn't come along until September. Axelrod probably isn't mentioned as much by TV lovers because, according to your info, he was more involved with the movie side of things than Dozier.
Tammy Grimes was the original choice to play Samantha Stephens in "Bewitched" - once "Bewitched" was a phenominal success, ABC decided to give her a try with her own kooky comedy - sadly, this show only lasted four weeks!
What's even more ironic is, Dick Sargent, who played Tammy Grimes' twin brother, was the FIRST choice to play Darrin Stephens on "Bewitched", but he was under contract to Universal studios at the time- - Luckily for him, and unfortunate for Dick York, that when York was unable to stay on the show, Sargent was able to fit the role and keep the show going into the 70s---
My memory of this shows consists entirely of the opening "In Color" cartoon. It got a lot of press for being cancelled so quickly-it was SO unusual for a network to pull a show after just four episodes back then- but I can see why ABC did it here.
The reason this aired was because executive producer William Dozier was also the executive producer of "BATMAN"; in 1966, ABC was willing to buy anything he produced because "BATMAN" was such a roaring hit for the network, and they wanted more of that "Dozier magic". However, opposite CBS' "MY THREE SONS" and NBC's "STAR TREK"- plus some highly negative reviews- it indeed vanished after four weeks [TV GUIDE later printed a post-mortem article on the series].
This was the very first episode that aired ["Officer's Mess"- September 8, 1966], and is a black & white print; those were often sent out to those affiliates who didn't carry the show at its scheduled time [Thursdays, 8:30-9pm(et)] and/or didn't have "color facilities". Particpating sponsors include The Drackett Company {Behold}...
