People ask to be raped like people ask to be murdered. And people should be blamed like murder victims are blamed - oh wait! They're NOT. You can't blame a victim for a crime. You cannot say to someone "don't get raped" and expect it to be effective, just as you wouldn't tell someone "don't get murdered".
Of course blaming the victim would be excusing the the rapist and that in itself is a violation. However, excusing the victim for fostering actions that could otherwise be avoided would just be an equivalent error. Rapists should be held accountable and advise should be given on preventing the fostering of perversion if the endless pattern is to e halted forever.
I'm a girl, and as much as I would like to wear whatever I want, I don't. And I'm not saying I disagree completely with this video, but there are certain things I think were pretty ridiculous. They SHOULD be making a campaign to help people stay safe and avoid situations that could lead to harm. To say that we should teach men to not rape is ridiculous. Society obviously does NOT condone rape. What makes you think you're going to convince a rapist not to rape??
@kathywathy888 The prevailing attitude is still that women should be held responsible for being raped, if they weren't being completely careful in their dress and actions and who they associated with. No, society does not literally "condone" rape, but there's still this attitude that a victim could IN ANY WAY be the one at fault, and that is WRONG. Dead wrong. So many cases of rape go unreported because of this attitude; the victim thinks "I shouldn't have done that/worn that," cont.
@kathywathy888 when the idea should be "That rapist should be put to justice for hurting me, no matter what I chose to wear, or where I went, or what I did!"
@MissReige Not saying it's alright to rape but if they way a girl is dressed makes me want to rape her then isn't she partially to blame? like walkin around in a bad neighborhood covered in gold chains?
@Barrowaxe - Seriously?! So a person's right to their body doesn't count for anything? And if you wear a blue shirt and blue brings out the monster in me enough to beat you to a pulp, that's OK? Check your logic man.
So people do stupid things like walking home alone down dark alleyways, or thru bad neighbourhoods. So what? That doesn't excuse the rapist for wanting to violate a person in the worst possible way. Yes, rape is rarely about sex; it goes deeper than that. Anyway, no matter how stupid or thoughtless a person is, THEY DO NOT DESERVE TO BE RAPED, EVER. No-one deserves something like that, whether they be male or female, wearing a burka or wearing a bikini. NO. NOT EVER.
you're naive if you believe that your actions, and behaviors don't affect your environment. i mean you wouldn't walk into oakland wearing a white pointed hood screaming white power. YES people can walk anywhere and wear anything they choose without fear of harassment, ridicule, or assault. However, that is simply not the world we live in. I do believe this video is a bit ridiculous and a bit demeaning. A video that promoted awareness of your surroundings and situations would have been better.
@Ur0wnEg0@Ur0wnEg0 No, people CANNOT walk anywhere and wear anything they choose without fear of harassment, ridicule, or assault. That is why a campaign ad like this is great. We can CHANGE the world by changing attitudes. Being aware of one's own surroundings is important, but saying, "She's asking for it" just because she's showing skin is never okay - not in a dark alley, not in a well-lit area, not in a club, not in a mall. It's time to make that idea mainstream.
@Ur0wnEg0 You know what, I tried to type up this huge rant about how you're completely wrong
but I can't.
You're blaming victims for how they're dressed because you clearly don't understand that rape is not about sex.
It's about power. It's about hurting someone because you want to. You know there are cases of young children being raped and older people in their 60s, 70s, 80s, etc being raped? Are you going to say they had it coming to them because they "weren't aware" of their surroundings?
@Ur0wnEg0 So you're basically saying, "you were raped, it's your fault". You know what? You're disgusting, I won't even try to reason with you why what you said makes no sense.
@Ur0wnEg0 I get what your saying. In the same way a women can't dress provocatively without also asking to be raped, a can't man walk around in his designer suit with gold rings and watches without also asking to be mugged. Or a man that forgets to lock the car door and put the alarm on is asking for it to be stolen. Or a man that dresses like the situation form the Jersey Shore is asking to be slapped. Right? Blame the victim, the perpetrator shouldn't be blamed! The person did it to themselves
Okay. I think this is a great message, and I just want to get something out. I'm not dipping for pity.
When I told my friends what happened to me, many of them said that if it really happened, I wouldn't do my best to act normal or wear tank tops and other "revealing" clothes. They also said what he did doesn't count as rape and that I was putting a terrible burden on him for saying so.
Taken advantage of sexually against one's own will. Isn't that rape?
This is brilliant! Love it! It's sad that people actually think that rape victims ask for it ... what bullshit. Next thing you know people will be saying,
'That four year-old girl was just begging to be molested wasn't she?'.
I hope this gets shown in Australia! Or something similar.

@AngryActivist45 Yeah, shit like that pisses me off too. Like this one time, I forgot to lock my car. Somebody fucking stole it and now everyone I know is blaming me for forgetting to lock my car. Goddammit, I am a human being, I should be able to peacefully leave my car wherever I want without having to worry about some disgusting pig trying to steal it or blame me for leaving it so vulnerable.
@patrifiedy2k Yeah so like this one time, I forgot to put a lock on my genitals. Of course some douchebag immediately tried to break in, because everybody knows that a woman who hasn't made her body an impenetrable fortress is just asking for it. Seriously, how is locking a car the same thing as walking outside at night? At all? Do you think there are no good reasons for a woman to leave her house after dark? Whoops, I can't walk home from work because it's winter and gets dark at 5:00 p.m.
@patrifiedy2k Women aren't possessions. Women aren't cars or houses. They can't get stolen or broken into. Rape is a violent crime. How about "I was walking through the park at night because I took the wrong train home and needed to cross the park to get to my building. Then, out of nowhere, I was knifed and robbed. I'm a human being! I should be able to walk home at night without needing stitches after." The fact that you think this analogy is relevant to rape shows how sick our culture is.
It's very sad to say that ads like these are necessary. I hope this will get massive attention, and that other countries will follow with similar awareness raising. Thanks for this.
@rockyPants4000 Do you think if all the woman going to nightclubs wear trousers instead of skirts, no one will get raped? That if no women dare drink or have fun when they're out, no one will get raped? That's nonsense. Rapists won't stop being sexual predators even if all women walk around sober wearing baggy pants 100% of the time - and in the meantime, woman suddenly lose the right to live their lives bc somehow it becomes their responsibility to avoid rape.
@RedZolah Sorry to interject. I do agree with you on that dressing moderately would not completely reduce the risk of rape however I do believe that it would still reduce it. Ideally, yes, a woman should be able to walk home by herself at night without fear of being raped but realistically, there will always be people like this and if women don't want to be victims, they should take the necessary precautions.
I don't want to be mugged so when I walk in public, I keep my valuables hidden.
@Cesariono A woman is not a piece of property and your comparison is not only wrong, but horribly misogynistic and offensive. Men need to be taught not to rape, period.
@Cesariono and yet people are still mugged every day, even with valuables carefully concealed. Just like women are still raped every day, even fully covered. Get over yourself, you dick.
@RedZolah Furthermore, the majority of rapes are committed by someone the woman/girl knew. The sad fact is that the Western world has a culture of rape, perpetuated by ignorance of the issue and an unwillingness to breach the subject in public settings and classrooms. It's not some guy in a mask jumping out of the bushes and raping women. It's neighbors, friends, family and co-workers, in a macho-man, chauvinistic and entirely more sly and subtle manner. After parties, after dates, and so on.
@AngryActivist45 Well put! I live in a pretty safe neighbourhood, and I take walks all the time. It's how I relax. The other day I was stopped by a taxi driver who offered me a free ride to wherever I was going, I told him no thanks, I wanted to enjoy the day. He got so confused, almost irate, as too why I would risk being attacked. I've taking these walks in the same route for *years*. Sure there's always a chance I could get attacked, but it would never be my fault.
It's the same kind of attitude towards white people who are attacked in ghettos. "Well, if you're dumb enough to do that, than there's no one to blame but yourself." That shit pisses me off. White people are human beings. They should be able to walk peacefully where they please, when they please, without having to worry about some violent maniac trying to attack them or blame them.
Lol, women and their "rights". It's too bad we live in the real world where violence happens.
@anonymous8261631 Yep. Cos a woman going outside with any part of her skin showing, talking to a strange man, daring to have fun and a drink act like, you know, an adult person who has a right to a life? That TOTALLY the same as a white person walking into a ghetto. Right? Stupid women, thinking they have the right to walk about like men! They're totally BEGGING to get violently assaulted, and they probably like it.
Anyone unwilling to talk about this without resulting to 'the victim has no way to help mitigate some of the risk' is silly.... this video in point, the guy notices her because of the skirt. I'm not saying she is asking for it, but unfortunately like muggers, burglars and murderers, theres always been rape and rapists. I think it prudent to be aware of risk, without the 'nothing to do with me, stop the rapist' line.
@skitzee2k Right. So what can women do to mitigate the risk? Not wear short skirts. Maybe not low cut tops either? Perhaps we shouldn't drink, and not talk to strange men. And not walk outside alone? Hmmm...strange how that sounds like living in Iran. Maybe you think women should put on a Burka? Except incidence of rape and violence against women in Iran is HIGHER than in the UK...so maybe you're full of shit.
I love this and now aspire to move to Scotland. Why is America so close-minded that we don't get PSA's like this? Are American women so oppressed that they don't deserve it?
This is such a good video but the worst thing is that this is actually a problem! It's really horrifying that people genuinley believe women ask to be raped. What is wrong with society when we need to point out that this isn't acceptable? Isn't it common sense? ¬¬
@rockyPants4000 People get raped in their own homes in broad daylight while completely sober and covered from neck to toe. The CONTRIBUTING FACTORs you're thinking of aren't factors at all but worthless excuses people use to put the blame on the victim. They make no difference whatsoever in the likelihood of rape and women know it. Blame the criminal for the crime.
There really ought to be a "LOVE" or "EFFING TRUTH" button. I really wish that we could see ads like this all over, especially in those countries that like to pat themselves on the back for getting a C- in treating women like people.
It's sad that not blaming women for the choices of their assailants is a novel concept.
I love this, a great message with a little bit of humor thrown in. I'm surprised by the attitude that still exists towards victims of sexual assault and rape, even subtly. There's a great article I came across that proves a point that really bothers me: "Society teaches 'Don't get raped' rather than 'Don't rape'. Further more why is this attitude just towards women? It's infuriating(I've known people of both sexes who have had this experience) to see such a discrepancy.
It makes me so upset to hear things like "She shouldn't have done this or that, it wouldn't have happened." Sure, maybe it was a bad decision to walk alone at night or wear skimpy clothes, but women should not have to worry about being attacked in the first place!
Good commercial, but I think rapists are the type of people who just don't give a shit.
Seriously, if you're willing to rape a woman, are you really going to be persuaded by a TV advertisement?
I mean, nothing would please me more than for this to be effective, but I just don't see it working. I don't think the type of people this is aimed towards are the type of people who would listen.
I still think they should air it though, even if there is a small chance that it's effective.
@fidgetingfinch It's intention is to challenge woman-blaming attitudes surrounding rape. These things then hopefully have knock effects in the way society as a whole perceives the crime.
@rockyPants4000 How about we 'protect' women from rape by forcing them to wear full body coverings or stay inside all the time, or 'they totally deserved it, they were stupid! Being attractive in public!'
Rape is the ONLY CRIME that can be defended using the victim's mannerisms, they way they dress or act. No one's going to blame a victim for being murdered just or robbed or car jacked. Think about it.
Anyways, love this commercial, wish it aired where I live.
@rockyPants4000 IT'S NOT MY FAULT I STOLE YOUR MONEY. YOU WERE WALKING AROUND IN THE NICE PART OF TOWN AND YOU WERE DRESSED SO NICELY. SO I KNEW YOU PROBABLY HAD MONEY TO SPARE. HELL, YOU'VE PROBABLY EVEN LET YOUR FRIENDS BORROW IT, SO WHY WOULD YOU MIND IF SOMEONE JUST TOOK YOUR MONEY WITHOUT YOUR CONSENT?
SORRY I COULDN’T HELP BUT STEAL YOUR CAR WHEN YOU LEFT IT OUT YOU SHOULDN’T HAVE LEFT IT OUT IN THE OPEN LIKE THAT AND MADE IT LOOK SO NICE. I CAN’T HELP IT IT’S INSTINCT. IT’S YOUR FAULT.
@rockyPants4000 Yeah, because wearing a skirt around other human beings is obviously comparable to drinking from a crocodiles waterhole. The only contributing factor in a rape is the rapist. Humans are not crocodiles.
@rockyPants4000 If men are the ones committing rape in most cases, why should women take precautions? They're not the ones at fault. Maybe men shouldn't get drunk or go out at night.
Women (and everyone else) have the right to dress as they see fit and not get assaulted. Saying certain acts such as wearing skimpy clothes/walking alone at night are contributing factors of rape is a bit naïve as it assumes men are programmed to be violent/lustful and prone to succumb to the dangers of a woman’s beauty. You are making dangerous assumptions of male sexuality-assumptions that inherently degrade women.
you are stuck in an ignorant phase that most people struggle with. yes while it is a reality that certain behaviors might encourage others to do bad things, things should NOT be that way and the only way things are going to change is if WE BRING IT TO THE ATTENTION of people like you who think this way. There is NO EXCUSE for rape ever! There is no one who EVER asks to be raped, and there is NEVER an excuse to force someone against their will. That is the true message.
@rockyPants4000 Rape is a manifestation of a desire for control and power, not sex. And if you're implying that women ought to tone down their sexuality, that's absurd, especially in a context like this one where it is entirely appropriate.
@courantdere yeah it fucking is. NO girl wakes up in the morning hoping that her body will be violated. no one. no girl wants to forced upon. no girl dresses to be raped. for people to say "well look at her? shes dressed like a slut, she was asking for it" is unnactable. men need to prosectured and charged no mater what the girl was wearing. that skirt has sequens. why is it vulgar. is it too short? she looks like shes 20 something. the skirt isnt the point of the add. the words are...
It's to tell men not to rape! Hello? Women can wear whatever they want, but that doesn't mean they deserved to be sexually harassed. It doesn't matter if you think the girl was being a tease or not, that doesn't give anyone the right to rape her!
It is never the fault of the victim. It is ONLY ALWAYS the fault of the rapist, no matter what.
@courantdere I think the message was pretty clear. It's to show people that saying a woman was at fault for her rape is WRONG, because a lot of people do say things like "She was asking to get raped, because of how she dressed." which is sickening.
@taiilahh Absolutely. She may or may not have been wearing it to be attractive to people she wants a consensual encounter with, but definitely not a non consensual one.
@igortube Rapists (and even everyday people) see a a woman's "provocative" clothing as consent for sex. Rape is about sex; it is about using sex as a tool for abuse, as power, as violence, etc.
Um... I thought that no one still believed that people still engaged in victim blaming. And anyway, it doesn't seem like rape is a serious problem in Scotland with only 27 people being convicted in 2000. It seems like the money could be better spent to to combat murders of which there were 109 in Scotland in 2006 to 2007. Not only does Scotland have the second highest murder rate in western Europe(behind Finland) but it also has the fastest growing one.
If you go to the website, it says only 3% of actual rapes are reported actually lead to conviction. It is estimated that about 99% of rapes occurring worldwide are never reported at all. Visit the website and see for yourself.
I have a hard time imagining tht there were only 27 rapes in scotland in 2000. Seems to me the real problem is getting prosecutors take this seriously, no?
@TheFenceandtheJug Rape often goes unreported. Law enforcement officials agree that the actual number is much, much higher than the reported number, and higher still than the conviction number, since rape is so hard to prosecute.
@inb4pwnage Are you crazy? Maybe in a perfect world, but in this world not everyone realizes that rape is to be blamed on the perpetrator not the victim. It's absurd, but that's rape culture for you. Do you think they'd make this huge campaign for something so unnecessary? Victim blaming is prevalent ALL AROUND THE WORLD (just look at the reactions to the Polanski case over the years!!)
Are you aware of the issue of victim blaming? The point of this ad is to communicate to rape victims, and idiots like you, that it's never the fault of the victim. People have the right to dress as they like, without the risk of sexual violence, and that's what this ad is talking about.
Rape victims are often told they were 'asking for it' when they wear short skirts, or have a drink, when we should be blaming the rapists for their abusive behaviour.
"She's asking for it" would imply that she wanted to have sex, not be raped. It's impossible to "ask" to be raped, because rape implies a lack of consent.
@FOADgamers It could imply that, but in today's rape culture, it really is about harrassment. The sex she is asking for is a fantasy men dredge up in their minds. It's a way of explaining rape, by saying that whether she really wants to have sex or not, her clothes consent for her anyway.
@FOADgamers "She's asking for it" is a turn of phrase that suggests that by merit of body language, dress, etc, a woman is asking for sex from the men around her. Not that she's actually, with her big girl words, "asked" for sex.
This is not "grammar nazism", you're just being purposefully obtuse. "She's asking for it" is an idiom, and a widely recognized one at that.
Of course! Its so much better to blame the victim... it's not like LADY GAGA doesn't dress provocatavely eh? and she's voted number one role model this year...

@Cesariono instead of telling women to "take necessary precautions" why don't we teach soceity "do not rape."
And I say this as a male.
WolfenNights 7 months ago 16

Sure there's always a chance I could get attacked, but it would never be my fault.
leavingnormal88 9 months ago
@leavingnormal88 Exactly. And who want's to live a life of fear. Staying inside day after day being afraid of what's outside isn't living.
TheFemaleIcelander 9 months ago
It's the same kind of attitude towards white people who are attacked in ghettos. "Well, if you're dumb enough to do that, than there's no one to blame but yourself." That shit pisses me off. White people are human beings. They should be able to walk peacefully where they please, when they please, without having to worry about some violent maniac trying to attack them or blame them.
Lol, women and their "rights". It's too bad we live in the real world where violence happens.
anonymous8261631 9 months ago
@anonymous8261631 Yep. Cos a woman going outside with any part of her skin showing, talking to a strange man, daring to have fun and a drink act like, you know, an adult person who has a right to a life? That TOTALLY the same as a white person walking into a ghetto. Right? Stupid women, thinking they have the right to walk about like men! They're totally BEGGING to get violently assaulted, and they probably like it.
RedZolah 9 months ago 16
Anyone unwilling to talk about this without resulting to 'the victim has no way to help mitigate some of the risk' is silly.... this video in point, the guy notices her because of the skirt. I'm not saying she is asking for it, but unfortunately like muggers, burglars and murderers, theres always been rape and rapists. I think it prudent to be aware of risk, without the 'nothing to do with me, stop the rapist' line.
skitzee2k 9 months ago
@skitzee2k Right. So what can women do to mitigate the risk? Not wear short skirts. Maybe not low cut tops either? Perhaps we shouldn't drink, and not talk to strange men. And not walk outside alone? Hmmm...strange how that sounds like living in Iran. Maybe you think women should put on a Burka? Except incidence of rape and violence against women in Iran is HIGHER than in the UK...so maybe you're full of shit.

MaddyOps 1 year ago 355
I love this, a great message with a little bit of humor thrown in. I'm surprised by the attitude that still exists towards victims of sexual assault and rape, even subtly. There's a great article I came across that proves a point that really bothers me: "Society teaches 'Don't get raped' rather than 'Don't rape'. Further more why is this attitude just towards women? It's infuriating(I've known people of both sexes who have had this experience) to see such a discrepancy.

@rockyPants4000
MsJellybeanmachine 1 year ago 18
@rockyPants4000
you are stuck in an ignorant phase that most people struggle with. yes while it is a reality that certain behaviors might encourage others to do bad things, things should NOT be that way and the only way things are going to change is if WE BRING IT TO THE ATTENTION of people like you who think this way. There is NO EXCUSE for rape ever! There is no one who EVER asks to be raped, and there is NEVER an excuse to force someone against their will. That is the true message.
maidensnowflake 1 year ago 5
@rockyPants4000 Rape is a manifestation of a desire for control and power, not sex. And if you're implying that women ought to tone down their sexuality, that's absurd, especially in a context like this one where it is entirely appropriate.

Seriously what's the point, to sell more vulgar skirts ?
If the goal is have girls be more cock-teasing every year, well good luck with that.
I doubt it's an ad to convince judges so condemn criminals, is it. Is it to convince raped girls it wasn't their fault ?
courantdere 1 year ago
@courantdere yeah it fucking is. NO girl wakes up in the morning hoping that her body will be violated. no one. no girl wants to forced upon. no girl dresses to be raped. for people to say "well look at her? shes dressed like a slut, she was asking for it" is unnactable. men need to prosectured and charged no mater what the girl was wearing. that skirt has sequens. why is it vulgar. is it too short? she looks like shes 20 something. the skirt isnt the point of the add. the words are...
xoxmeghanoxo 1 year ago
@courantdere
Iishieboo 1 year ago 13
@courantdere I think the message was pretty clear. It's to show people that saying a woman was at fault for her rape is WRONG, because a lot of people do say things like "She was asking to get raped, because of how she dressed." which is sickening.
taiilahh 1 year ago 11

igortube 1 year ago
@igortube Rapists (and even everyday people) see a a woman's "provocative" clothing as consent for sex. Rape is about sex; it is about using sex as a tool for abuse, as power, as violence, etc.

it does not say "rape me."
but it does say "I'm a whore!"
pantsuck10 1 year ago
TheFenceandtheJug 1 year ago
@TheFenceandtheJug
If you go to the website, it says only 3% of actual rapes are reported actually lead to conviction. It is estimated that about 99% of rapes occurring worldwide are never reported at all. Visit the website and see for yourself.
CorianderCivar 1 year ago 2
@TheFenceandtheJug Maybe "only 27 convicted" *is* the problem?
I have a hard time imagining tht there were only 27 rapes in scotland in 2000. Seems to me the real problem is getting prosecutors take this seriously, no?
MyLatestEscape 1 year ago 6
@TheFenceandtheJug Rape often goes unreported. Law enforcement officials agree that the actual number is much, much higher than the reported number, and higher still than the conviction number, since rape is so hard to prosecute.

inb4pwnage 1 year ago
@inb4pwnage Are you crazy? Maybe in a perfect world, but in this world not everyone realizes that rape is to be blamed on the perpetrator not the victim. It's absurd, but that's rape culture for you. Do you think they'd make this huge campaign for something so unnecessary? Victim blaming is prevalent ALL AROUND THE WORLD (just look at the reactions to the Polanski case over the years!!)
CorianderCivar 1 year ago 3
@inb4pwnage Way to miss the point.
Are you aware of the issue of victim blaming? The point of this ad is to communicate to rape victims, and idiots like you, that it's never the fault of the victim. People have the right to dress as they like, without the risk of sexual violence, and that's what this ad is talking about.
Rape victims are often told they were 'asking for it' when they wear short skirts, or have a drink, when we should be blaming the rapists for their abusive behaviour.
w00t64 1 year ago 10
"She's asking for it" would imply that she wanted to have sex, not be raped. It's impossible to "ask" to be raped, because rape implies a lack of consent.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a grammar Nazi.
FOADgamers 1 year ago
@FOADgamers It could imply that, but in today's rape culture, it really is about harrassment. The sex she is asking for is a fantasy men dredge up in their minds. It's a way of explaining rape, by saying that whether she really wants to have sex or not, her clothes consent for her anyway.
CorianderCivar 1 year ago 7
@FOADgamers "She's asking for it" is a turn of phrase that suggests that by merit of body language, dress, etc, a woman is asking for sex from the men around her. Not that she's actually, with her big girl words, "asked" for sex.
This is not "grammar nazism", you're just being purposefully obtuse. "She's asking for it" is an idiom, and a widely recognized one at that.
