@wren01ful Hee hee the reason isn't meant for elementary school kids. Basically you cancel out your number. So if your number was 7, you are doubling it to 14, adding 10 to it. If you keep 14 and 10 seperate (algebra allows you to do this with what is known as the distributive property) , and then divide both numbers by 2, you get 7 and 5. Now you subtract your original number, and 7-7=0. 0+5=5. This is why it works!
