I fell for this scam too. I bought 4 newly listed 1Tb portable hard drive from eBay then the auction disappeared. I had to rised a dispute through Paypal as item not received. Then a few days later Paypal received a tracking number and was forwarded to me. The package arrived and a family member signed it. When I opened it all I got was a cheap fake coin. I had to changed my dispute to item as not described and had to return it with tracking number in order for Paypal to refund me.
I had this exact same thing happen to me. This is apparently a common scam where everyone makes money but you. Luckily, because it is so common and so ridiculous, PayPal is aware of it. In my case, all I had to do was call them and explain "I'm the victim of the 'Coin Scam' - I bought an (item) off of ebay, and then much later I received a package with a fake coin in it." Three minutes later they had refunded the money in my account with some sincere apologies. Hope nobody else falls prey to it
@FraserGoodTimes You're lucky that Paypal refunded you without a fuss. I had to return an empty envelope to get a tracking number and reported this to the police to get a crime number and still have to chase after Paypal after 5 days to refund me. These scams still on going in eBay.
I fall into this same scam, the same person continues to defraud ebay and paypal and they do nothing
I ordered some hard drives from a seller on ebay, instead of the drives I received a fake one U.S. Dollar 1865 Coin. According to PayPal I have to send this back to the seller So They Can my refund process is Being scammed.
But the freight is more expensive than the paid product, give people give up claim
It's not a complete fraud.
It is a hard disk.

Most Hard drives aren't made in China, they are made in Thailand, hence the horribly high prices after the Thai floods.

That really isn't even a funny fraud either...

The scam seems especially prevalent around Christmas time; obviously when demand for these kind of goods soars.

this happened to me a few weeks ago, i started a claim on ebay and it asked me to post the item back for a refund....
which i did not do as it would cost a fortune to send a worthless coin back to china ....
so i exclated my claim and i got my full refund without sending anything back :) glad to see ebay are working in the buyers favor
