  • Who wrote this song? My dad and grandfather loved the Rangers Quartet. My grandfather was privileged to hear them sing live many years ago.

  • I see big chief and doy Ott but who iare the two between big Chief and Devnver??

  • @kyldy That's Hovie and Jake before he got his toupee.

Seriously, this is the Rangers Quartet, not the Statesmen. Standing: Arnold Hyles (bass), Walter Leverette (baritone), Vernon Hyles (lead), and Denver Crumpler (tenor). Seated: Doy Ott (piano).

  • It that Doy Ott on Piano?

  • There was only one Denver Crumpler ! Sherrill Neilson tried but "Crump" was my favorite Statesmen Tenor. Sometimes I could hear reflections of the "Inkspots" another one of my Dad's favorites as well as mine. The Statesmen had it all-class and musical integrity.

  • Oh, my goodness. He was so thin. You just don't think of thin people having diabetes. Think for the info.

  • I see that Denver passed a way at age 42. What happened? I was a little girl about 9yrs. old the first time he was at the Ryman. He sang "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling". I've never forgotten.

  • @GRANNIEBEXAR He passed away from diabetic shock if I remember correctly.

  • @statesmenfan According to Hovie, Denver died from a congestive heart problem no one was aware of at the time. He gives testament to that and the Godley man that Denver was on one of the Gaither tapes. I was privledged to know him for the years he was with the Rangers. He set the standard for Tenors throughout gospel music. He was a diabetic.

  • You can't get any better singing than that !

  • I needed a Denver fix today....makes me happy to hear that remarkable voice!

  • Have to have Denver fix every once in a while....loved him and his singing!

  • Can't believe that no one singer of gospel music has ever done it like Denver did! I have been listening for 61 years and there are no takers overall that can match him!

  • Thank you for your reply medunn1976. Denver had an absolutely beautiful voice. I have listened many hours to him, singing with the Statesmen. Lord I want to go to heaven is my favorite. I know you are indeed happy being related to such a singer. God be with you.

  • Every time I here a cut that Crumpler is on that I haven't heard before, I get blown away!! The guy was awesome!

  • Were the Rangers before the Statesmen?

    Thank you for any responce.

  • Denver Crumpler was my Great Uncle, and the Rangers were before the Statesmen. He died at age 42 while with the Statesmen.

  • Denver Crumpler was my mother's 2nd cousin. His dad and mother's granddad were brothers...

  • I never knew Uncle Denver's father, but his mother used to stay with us quite often. In fact, in between the Rangers (where he was robbed) and the Statesment, Uncle Denver and his family stayed at our house for three months. I have seen him use a hand saw to make music. Grandma Penny was very proud of him, as were we.

  • @Musiciloveable Yes, for several years. They were in a head on collision that killed several and left Arnold Hyles injured for life.

  • My favorite tenor is Denver...Hi is.....beyond the words....thanks for posting!God bless you!!!

  • my mother was 8 years younger than your uncle Denver but she said she loved to hear him and his brother Otto sing. Denver was my grandmothers (myrtie crumpler stewart) 1st cousin..so what would she be to you.. Denver would have been our 3rd cousin. my mother is 89 years old.

  • What a tenor singer! I'm so thankful for YouTube otherwise I would never have known what a singer Crumpler is.

  • Well, Denver's magic is still working! Thanks again for posting these treasures from the past, friend.

  • Thank you everso much for this posting.

    It was truly wonderful

You can hear sounds that influenced the early Statesmen in thier stylings

  • This was a real blessing .

  • I remember Arnold Hyles singing " On the Jerico Road" on the local radio station and he was my dad's next favorite bass after Bill Lyles. Saw him on stage when in a wheelchair and he could still put down some low notes!

  • Lovely to hear Denver singing again...I can remember when he died, our whole family was extremely upset. Lived in Memphis then and my family was in love with the Statesmen...just as good with the Rangers!
