They felt [Studio bosses] they couldn't deal with having a film that was going to cause religious controversy.' So they stripped key scenes & elements from the final edit just before release.
Bill Donohoe, of the Catholic League for Religious & Civil Rights, called on parents to boycott the film, which worked in the US, however the film still made an incredible $400 million worldwide.
I love this film and think that it's one of the most overlooked and underrated Fantasy films since 2000 (along with Stardust and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen). Visual effects were decent. Nicole Kidman was stunning and very beautiful villainess. Dakota Blue Richards and Daniel Craig were great too. Hope they'll make a sequel

The movie finished TOTALLY differently than the book! I was so surprised because the very end was exactly what made the book spectacular, however the movie itself was absolutely amazing!

WOW they pronounce "daemon" wrong. It's "daymun". Not "demon"! WOW that can be torn apart by the Church. Very bad move with all the controversy the religious community is stirring up.
"daymun" is how i pronounce it when i read the word, but in the second book, the subtle knife, will is taken aback when lyra tells him that pan is her daemon because he explains that in his world, demon is a bad spirit. so all in all, i think it is supposed to be pronounced 'demon'...doesn't stop me from saying 'daymun', tho. ;)
I agree, just because the books are about battling against religion it just makes them gain publicity and then people will read them more! I don't care what the Protestant and Baptist churches say, I love his dark materials!

I love the connection between the humans and their daemons. Such a deep connection is hard to come by in this horribly realistic world. It must be hard for some people to understand, the human-daemon bond.
Those who are convinced that daemons are evil: Have any of you bothered to notice that -in this movie- they are more or less what makes a person's life worth living? Having a daemon is what keeps you ALIVE. A daemon is your soul, your best friend, what could be called a 'lifemate'. These daemons are not out to destroy the world.

I really think the film wasn't bad. It was much better than I thought it would be. It's really worth watching, also for those who already read the book before.
I think that all the religious groups saying that you should not see the movie, is wrong. I mean, you cannot judge a movie based on a book. You have to read the book to get what he is trying to say, and then form your opinion. The movies leave so much out.

God doesn't die in this movie, he gets killed in the 3rd book. and atheism isn't worshiping satan, it is the belief that there is no God. Daemons are not the same as demons. This is even addressed in the second book.
They are simply your soul located outside your body...if it dies, you die and if you die it dies. It's not a familiar spirit.
There are some things in the book that may be morally ambiguous, but my morals are strong enough that a fantasy book can't change them.

See the thing is its based on a book, so if the book revolves around a child, which it does, then the movie would revolve around the child too. Crazy fucking idea i know.

it doesnt make any sence y they should be making a big deal bout it. it is stupid they did the same thing with harry potter and with homosexuals. just because its differnt and im christian and i dont have a problem with it u cant make somebody be somethin or make them change something they like they dont try to do that to us when we make our movies they dont make big deals bout it..gawsh grow the hell up!!!

*very amused* It's hilarious to see so many people arguing over a fantasy movie.
I love the connection between the humans and their daemons. Such a deep connection is hard to come by in this horribly realistic world. It must be hard for some people to understand, the human-daemon bond.

Those who are convinced that daemons are evil: Have any of you bothered to notice that -in this movie- they are more or less what makes a person's life worth living? Having a daemon is what keeps you ALIVE. A daemon is your soul, your best friend, what could be called a 'lifemate'. These daemons are not out to destroy the world.
And now I'm off to talk to my dragon lifemate... Farewell, O' non-imaginative, pitiful, daemon-less beings...

I think that all the religious groups saying that you should not see the movie, is wrong. I mean, you cannot judge a movie based on a book. You have to read the book to get what he is trying to say, and then form your opinion. The movies leave so much out.
By the way, I LOVE the books and want to see the movie so so so so bad.

I read book 1 and 2 and they where good! The first book isn't so atheist as the second but still. Woever saw the movie should have read the book cause its awsome!

God doesn't die in this movie, he gets killed in the 3rd book. and atheism isn't worshiping satan, it is the belief that there is no God. And yes this movie does promote that, im not saying that it wasn't a good movie because it was, i loved it. you really have to pay attention to notice. by the way, you all know that the guy who wrote this was an athiest.

Why are so many people hating on this movie?! I thought it was great, and you know what? I didn't notice ANYTHING like church or God or anything like that. I just saw it as a cool, fictional world out of someone's imagination, and that's all it is. How on EARTH does someone get 'God dies' from this movie?!

For those of you who haven't read the books, this description is pretty accurate. I think Pullman could have picked a less controversial word...but oh well.
Daemons are not the same as demons. This is even addressed in the second book.
They are simply your soul located outside your body...if it dies, you die and if you die it dies. It's not a familiar spirit.
There are some things in the book that may be morally ambiguous, but my morals are strong enough that a fantasy book can't change them.

That's right, the word Daemon is TOTALLY different from Demon. Even in computers, a deamon is a program that runs in the background in unix.
