it brought tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat. This video captures the link between our consumption and this plastic soup that will out-live us all and all of our children and grandchildren
Zero population growth for about 40 years would really help things a lot but too bad humans are procreating machines with no empathy for any creatures other than their own kind.
By the way, this is the nicest video on youtube... because it actually talks about the world and where it is now. I subscribed to you because you are the one of the very few people who understand this world. :)
the human can think, and with this capability, we are still superior to any animal, every animal a capability that we can fly Sprachreise us to the example. Tiren because we can learn from them are a marvel of nature !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! therefore we must protect them at the supermarket and the fabric tüte benutzen.jetz we can change something else but in 100 years no longer stops in this sense because consumption !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow. Just when I thought I couldn't feel more despondent about the shambles we have made of the environment, I find this....and just imagine what is happening in along the coast with the BP spill. Actually, I can't imagine. Beautiful pairing of music and image. I think I'll go cry for a bit.
You've helped strengthen my occasionally lackadaisical resolve to "decommission" the destructive aspects of my own existence, and for that I thank you.
I am deeply moved by this video. There is no god who will save this world. This is Bronze Age thinking. Only we can make the change. I feel bad about how I contributed to this mess. I have been changed. Thank you to all those who contributed to this message.
Very profound! As an enviro volunteer/activist, I'd like to see a call to action at the end. It is sad and provoking, but a lot of people might think this is mexico or china, not us, and if they do realize it is us, they don't have a clue as to how they can help... it all looks so helpless. I would add some text identifying the locations and a statement that over 1.5 million marine creatures die yearly by ingesting our debris and "Say No to Plastics" Nicely done with the clips and music.
This is all the evidence you need to support the mandatory use of oxydegradable plastics which will degrade and disintegrate harmlessly. (Yes they do exist - search for "d2w" )
thanks for making this film. i just came back from the grocery, not having bought yogurt because the only choice was plastic. but that's a feel good approach. it has to be no plastic, at all. I live near the atlantic ocean and the beaches are full of plastic bits. there's no place that hasn't been contaminated. this is insane.
It is horribly ironic that when I was a kid I used to see those "Use plastic, save a tree" commercials. Now it's almost come full swing, use paper, save a tree. All I know is, it's one really crappy problem that doesn't get enough attention, like obesity.
Perhaps this is one of the things God could forsee man doing when he regretted making us in our mortal human form; Did he see us destrying his creation? We are destroying the world that God created for us and scarry as it is, within most of our earthly lifetimes and those of our children. We are creating a a dead world that I hope not only God can save us from.
@3nygel fortunately we've been gifted with the capability to reflect and reform. The problem may be that when a group gets too big, it can no longer organize itself. That may be the case with human beings. Not sure. I do know this: that faith must be restored in govt, because it is only with our govts that substantial change will be made.
This is your best video ever. Excellent work. I try to grocery shop with this in mind. Like I don't buy products with plastic packaging whenever possible. I buy powdered laundry detergent because it comes in a cardboard box. I hate plastic cups silverware etc. It's almost impossible though. Again, my hats off to you. Great job!
@BillyJHoward your efforts are appreciated, and thanks. it's really hard not to buy food packaged in plastic. our entire food distribution system (and most of our goods) is sheathed in slick plastic.... it's almost impossible to avoid. and that's why i made this video.
@Ruttikers all of the shots in this video were either shot by me or collected from youtube, but the shot you're referring to was taken from a short film about the life of a plastic bag. If you search "futurestates plastic bag" you'll find it.
I honestly cried when I watched this. It sucks that we've come so far in so many fields, and yet our earth is still suffering. And it sucks that I feel so helpless.
@iamacyborg haha. hey, I may be a self-proclaimed enviro-fascist, but envirofascism doesnt involve violence! but let me ask you, what might be a good solution?
@Plomomedia I'm not sure... this is not something I have studied. I think videos like this one help. I don't know who is doing the dumping or why the plastic is being placed into the ocean rather than landfills.
@iamacyborg there's no way to measure if a video like this helps, but I do believe that emotional communication, as this video attempts, is important. who is doing the dumping? 80 % of the plastic in the ocean comes from land. so, it somehow gets blown out to sea. if we didnt make everything out of plastic, we wouldnt have to worry about it ending up in the wrong place.
@Plomomedia I have to agree with that statement. Less plastic means less dumping, and for what plastic is justified in use (like in the computer you're using) - make sure it is properly disposed of.
@iamacyborg yea, i mean, I dont deny that i rely on goods made of plastic, like my computer, my camera, my videotapes, etc. But i'm not buying one of each and throwing them out daily. The amount of plastic spent on stuff we use for mere seconds is incredible. that would qualify as "low hanging fruit" - unfortunately the guardians of said fruit are the petrochemical lobbyists, and their financial interests would have the status quo in place, at any environmental or biological expense.
@Plomomedia Yes, I was not saying that you were hypocritical.
When you say petrochemical lobbyists, do you mean they lobby for laws and regulations that encourage the use of plastic? Or, do they simply prevent bans against plastic from being passed?
@iamacyborg i couldnt name one petrochemical lobbyist, except maybe Dow Chemical. they're one of the biggest. I mean they lobby to keep the status quo in place. Science knows that the amount of plastic we're throwing into the ocean and into landfills is ridiculously unsustainable, but those who lobby for the plastics industry usually cite plastic's benefits and tout recyclability and downplay their environmental impacts.
@iamacyborg for ex, when a proposal was made by a local official of the city of Boston to do something about the styrofoam cups at Dunkin Donuts locations, a spokesperson for Dunkin Donuts came out naturally against it, citing that the environmental impact of styrofoam is "unknown" and that there is no reasonable alternative to disposable styrofoam cups right now. its fucking bullshit is what it is. so to answer your question, yes they encourage the use of plastic, and try to prevent bans
@Plomomedia I think that communication is the only way to effect meaningful change. If you just try to pass a law, people will resent being forced and will evade it when they can. The more draconian the laws, the more harm is done since people will associate environmentalism with fascism.
If they make the decision themselves and littering is equated with other anti-social behavior, they will monitor their own behavior in addition to exerting social pressure on their peers.
@acromel yep. hawaii and midway island, which is not far from hawaii, out in the middle of nowhere (the dead baby albatrosses at the beginning were from midway)
