  • Thanks for posting this great video of a classic classy rifle. I really enjoy your imformative videos as they are very well done.

  • I have a question. I've seen a SMLE No1 MkIII with 2 holes drilled in a straight line (with an imprint line into the wood of something mounted on it) in the woordwork behind the rear sight aperature, above the chamber. Was this standard on a SMLE or signs of a modification? Been looking for WWI era sniper rifles to check the scope mounting (if any) but no luck so far. It's a 1911 BSA with a WW2 bolt (firing pin safety is a flat not a round one).

  • Where do you think they sell scopes for this rifle? And are they hard to mount?

  • and people wonder why we love guns...... Look at the craftmanship, look at the wood the metal! omg *drools*

  • Cant find those scope mounts need them for my no1 mk3 help me

  • you cannot use clips with scope? it gets in the way?

  • LMAO! I have to know the vegemite story! I've seen a few of your videos and just have to know what this is all about!?! lol

  • Hey Jolly, I have an Ishapore No1 Mk 3 that I just got two days ago ( first Lee Enfield ) and the bolt seems to be a bit hard to cock ( or the last bit of travel in the bolt that cocks the rifle is difficult. also she doesn't feed very nicely :( do you know why this might be? thanks for your help.

  • love the rifle...nice to see it with an origional scope for once pretty rare...as u well know lol. pretty good deal getting it from your friend as well. check out my channel for my ww2 stuff british mainly...no guns yet

  • Thats a bloody nice rifle mate.

  • @1gusmoose

Trying to figure out what "bloody" is used as? Is it used to emphasize something? Like by saying "Blood nice" you mean "REALLY nice"??

  • @TheMango121 Pretty much. Aussie slang ftw.

  • nice rifle. would you no where anyone might buy 1

  • You're a really lucky guy having that gun...

  • Ahhhh I have to laugh at all the aussie talk comments. You from NSW or Victoria Jolly Green Slug??

  • Comment removed

  • which is the enfield with the peep sight, i just saw one in the store, great vid by the way

  • @ortmaster Most likely a No. 4 Mk I.

  • @LTWW2 which year is that

  • @ortmaster No. 4 Mk I's were made from 1939 until the 1950s, with variations and improvements such as the No. 4 Mk I* and the No. 4 Mk 2.

  • Excellent piece of history and good looking. It seems like you will make a good custodian for that piece.

    I enjoyed the video.

  • I am having a problem loading the stripper clip for my lee enfield. Can you describe to me how the bullets are to be stacked correctly. I cannot seem to make them slide down

  • ahhh, you are SOOO lucky being given that, would be REALLY nice seeing you put some rounds through it, if you ever shoot it?

  • Dude that is a beauty, classic lines. Kinda like a timeless European motorcar. My mosin-nagant is waaaay uglier.

  • Christ sakes.. EVERY time I come looking for cool older gun videos I always seem to find one of yours lol. You have some very nice weapons sir. I am definitely jealous. I believe the appropriate response for me to give in Aussie terms would be "ooo buggah!"

  • what's with the vegemite jar?

  • @queensalnd what? you some kind of marmite guy?

  • If that gun could talk.Wonder how meny german or japs that it sent to the grave?I always wonder that with my old army guns that I have. This being a sniper rifle someone saw in the scope a face that that the shooter aimed at on pulling the triger.WOW.

  • would you do a shooting video of this rifle as i want to by 1 myself 1 day

  • Say Jolly green

Im looking at a series 4 mk 1 1943 canadian production

its missing a couple of bits, can you tell me weather the canadian made 303 had a bayonet and adjustable rear sight.

  • @andrsmi596 You actually found a Longbranch No. 4? Damn I've been trying to find one of those for a couple months now and I live *in* Canada for christ sakes lol. Longbranch Arsenal No. 4's would have had the same adjustable rear sight as the Birmingham Small Arms and Royal Ordinance Factory models made in the UK, and a shorter spike bayonet that you will often hear referred to as the pigsticker.

  • The Lee-Enfield action was the inspiration for the the US M1 Garand action. Mr. Garand tinkered with a number of foreign weapons in the 20-30s. He observed that the Lee-Enfield action had the required short bolt throw needed and he combined this action design with the gas system invented in Czechoslovakia. In adopting the Enfield design action he turned the locking system around (lugs in front) and switched to a free floating firing pin struck by a hammer external to the bolt (ala US BAR).

  • The mount is offset. The scope is actually centered over the bore- no parallax issues. On the M1C and M1D WWI German mauser sniper scopes the scope itself was offset to the left. This arrangement facilitated the en-bloc clip loading. The snipers using this weapon system were trained to adjust for the offset of the scope. THEY WOULD AIM the scope "center of aim" (cross haires , german post reticle etc) an inch and a half to the left of the intended "point of impact".

  • Jollygreen...pardon my ignorance, but are you folks still permitted to own personal weapons in Australia? I hope you are still permitted to own your nice SMLE.

  • @Harry44Callahan2

    Absolutely.

There isn't a TOTAL weapons ban, but gun control is much stricter. He probably needs licenses for all his weapons, as they're not heirlooms.

  • i always thought enfields were ugly but flawless in thier function. yours is absolutely beautiful. do you know where i can find instructions on dissassembling the bolt?

  • @jamesrobertmey I work alot with the .22 No8 Lee Enfield, which is basically a smaller scale No.4 with a few changes.

Look for a manual on the internet there are a large numbers, or message me saying how far you've got and i might be able to help you along.

  • I like that even better than the No4t great vid 5*

  • how come the scope doesnt get in the way of using a stripper clip to load the rifle

  • because the big black box in front of the trigger...thats err a "magazine"

  • ok then what about a kar 98 or springfield 1903 with a scope how do you load those because those dont have deatactable magazines

  • A stripper clip is for ease sake, to load in 5 or 10 rounds quickly. The internal magazine on a mosin, kar, springfield acts as a normal magazine, with a spring that pushes the rounds up. The strip holds the 5 rounds together is discarded (or put back in your pocket!) after the rounds go in.

With scope mounts all you need to do is load them in one at a time and there is no problem.

Some scope mounts are also mounted on the side of the rifle, so they dont interfer with loading.

  • ok this is off topic sorta but what about a m1 garand which has to use a clip to load and if you mount a scope above the breech then is the scope off to the side? if so then wouldnt that interfere with accuracy?

  • Yes the garand was side mounted, off the left side of the breech.

It doesnt matter where a scope is situated. It is mostly for comfort and practicaitly that scopes are above the breech, so you cheek and eye is bascilly on the same level as the stock.

To sight the rifle in you use the elevation and wind adjustment dials.

For eg...its a left hand mount, set a target up at 100m, keep changing the dials till you get on target constantlly and that is your particular your zero.

  • You note down how many clicks/turns of the scope you made, and whatever they are thats your 100m elevation, then if you want to shoot 200m, wind the elevaiton up till your on target...lets say 10 clicks, so 10 turns of the scope=100m. You have to do this for every rifle... every scope and set up is different, some scope mounts are higher, lower, forward, backwards, left, right. You have to find out where they go.

  • so for a garand you would have to change adjust the windage and elevation while on the other hand lets just use for example a m14 you only have to adjust elevation assuming your firing in a no wind situation... hypothetically speaking

  • No, lets say we bought one of each, they were perfectly sighted in when you shot them at 100 meters. You dont have to change a thing.

Lets say you bought both rifles and both scopes seperatly. You are still going to have to sight them in. Nither is going to be exactlly where you want it go.

Having a side mount in no way effects your accuarcy once you establish exactlly what the zero is.

I dont know what the difference between a side mount vrs a top mount is, not very much

  • most side mounted scopes are directly above the breech, its just so the rails (for the scope) dont block the breech, side mount means its mounted from the side, but scope is pretty much on center, few rifles have scopes on the side, even then the difference would be very minor

  • i realize this and i only know of 1 rifle that uses a side mount scope-m1 garand which is why i used it as an example

  • no lets say you wanted to shoot from 100m -200m then you would have to adjust the windage also because the scope is not directly in line with the rifle?

  • lol i see...man i have no idea about that...

  • o darn

  • How much did this rifle set you back????

  • You are one lucky man! I live in Canada & they are very hard to find here, I can see why she is the pride of your collection.

    Thou shall not covet.

  • To me, the best bolt-action rifle ever!

  • Nice vid, very pretty rifle!

  • please make a vid of you shooting that

  • what r the rules on rifles in aus,

  • That's a nice example. Haven't seen one before. And I prefer Marmite. Must be a Kiwi thing...

  • Hi. Sorry to bug you again, but could you do a close up of your scope mounts. My 1916 L.S.A seems to be drilled for scope mounts, possibly for two different mounts. It even has two holes that seem to be filled in with old screws so that it is flush looking. I now know that my rilfe was made in London England with low production rates. Thanks for your help so far.

  • Just watched you vid again and it shows me what I was looking for. Just woundering now why two of the holes on mine are filled in.

  • I love it! Are those scope mounts available in australia? I know where I am there are next to no original style mounts/scope options. As lithgow enfields that have already been drilled and tapped/otherwise buggered are in good supply, it'd be fun to do a sniper build.

  • hey jolly,

i was just wondering, with the rear sight, how does it work on the smle, does it go up by yards or meters etc?

    cheers Riess

  • im pretty sure it goes up by yards

  • That is a ripper of a rifle i have a 1941 Lithgow SMLE mk3 but i am not sure of the number does anybody know what number my rifle is .

It has M/A stamped on it which means it was made at Lithgow NSW but i am not sure what number it is i know it is a 1941 Lithgow SMLE MK.3

Does anybody know what number my rifle is

Any info would be much appreiciated

    Cheers Youtubers

  • thanks for the reply, so how much do scope mounts and a old looking SMLE scope cost these days? and also, can i get a rail put onto it so i can put any scope on, or can i only get smle scope mounts installed?

    thanks

  • hey jollygreenslugg,

i have a 1943 lithgow No.1 Mk 3 SMLE without scope mounts, and i was looking at getting a scope but then i realised that i need scope mounts. i am also from australia, victoria tho, can you buy scope mounts for the SMLE over here or not? and also how much are the SMLE scopes worth?

    thanks

    Riess

  • the ones in the video are factory lithgow mounts (origional) and are extremely rare. You can get aftermarket mounts from prety much any gunshop but u will then need a gunsmith to drill and tap them into the receiver. looking at roughly under $200 for supply and install scope mounts.

  • hey, thanks for the reply, so your saying, that i can pretty much go into any gun store in australia and order in SMLE scope mounts? and then once they come in, get them to install them into the receiver? and how much are SMLE scopes worth?

    cheers

  • Not origional authentic mounts (and scope) for that matter, just aftermarket type of stuff . Origional are extremely rare and expencive. But if you just want to mount a old fasioned looking scope (not an origional millitary sniper smle scope) with just ordinary type mounts its not much of a big deal at all. very easy to do

  • i taught that the enfield sniper rifles had a cheek piece or was that just the no4 mk1??....she is still a lovely rifle. all the best from ireland.

  • She's a beauty!

  • You can still get many old WW-II rifles from Big-5 sporting good stores, very cheap and no waiting periods for antique weapons.

  • priceless to me .omg great video

  • Better still are the A.I.A no4 mk4 made by Australian international arms. Which is a copy of the no4 mk1 in 7.62 Nato. They have a website, look it up you will not be disappointed.

  • India is the only country in the world that still reproduce Lee Enfield MK2 NATO 7.62 cal.for local market & some export customers. I think the company's called ISHAPORE if I'm not mistaken, just for anyone wanting to buy premium quality reproduction.Cheers.

  • Thats a sexy rifle. I have shot one before, very smooth. Im debating on getting the No.1 Mk.3, or No.4 Mk.1(or 2).

  • Do you ever use your rifles? (Such as for hunting or just shooting at a range)

  • dam i need a scope for my no.4

i dont know anyone besides myself that has a 1915 not a 1917

  • on the no4's did they make a model with two adjustable peep sites and how good of a bore would one have from world war two?

  • I have a .303 NO MK2 The only makings on the rifle is " PF118289 Property of the USA Sniper rifle" could any one tell me more about this rifle?

  • The US made a ton of Enfields. Savage arms was the major US manufacturer. I could not tell you more than that since I dont know much about Mk2. Hope that is helpfull.

  • the mark 2 was developed in 1912-1914 as a replacement to the mark 1, but the as it originally fired the .276 cartridge, it was a ballistic disaster, so it was abandoned on the outbreak of war 1, but due to the massive demand for rifles, it was rechambered for .303. When the US entered the war in 1917, they too needed many rifles, their contract with the British had just ended, so they redesigned the rifle to take the american .30 rimless round.

  • hey there, seen your videos, think you do great honor to the enfield, have one and need to take apart the bolt, can you help ?

    -cheers, from a yank

  • Heard that .303 ammo is easy enough to get nowadays, anyone know if thats true?

  • Depends on where in the world you live. In the States you can find it, you may have to pay too much, for new stuff, surplus if you find it is often cheap and may not even work.

  • Here in Canada it's 10.60 for 20 rounds. Not bad really.

  • Is it legal to own a lee Enfield in Canada?

  • Yes, it should.

  • Thanks for your reply.

  • Indeed it is. Canadian gun laws don't suck as much as some people think.

  • Thanks for your reply.

  • Hey JGS, do you think that would have originally had the add-on comb for higher cheek weld to allow for the elevated positioning of the scope?

    Cheers.

  • You seriously should get a sideline job as a host on TV/cable for classic firearms.

  • how many people did it kill since manufacturing ??? .... what a interresting rifle :)

  • Hey Jgs that is a beautiful, really well made rifle, I like the scope bases, I have some ideas on how to make a commercial scope fit on my bubba #1 MK III* but it would require some planning and me having access to a machine shop. have a good one! Tony in Dartmouth.

  • I love this eifle

  • what a Beauitful rifle.

  • OK CHOPPER REID!

  • i bought choppers rap album

  • does anyone know where I can get a scope for my Lee Enfield No.4 mk.2 made in 1949?

Apparently there is a company making replicas of them.

  • nicely done...

  • man that is a nice gun machine. Congratulations! I don't think I've ever seen one in Canada. Hopefully they will all be cared for in perpetuity by responsible persons in private hands.

  • mate been looking at deactivated rifles at about $500 how much are the firing ones?

  • Depends on the condition it's in, the place is was manufactured, when it was manufactured, and if it's matching numbers. I could get a No.4 Mk1, mostly matching numbers and in good condition for around 300-400 USD. Problem is finding a seller. Everyone around me loves them and doesn't want to part with it.

  • Uh, one word dude, bull crap. I can buy them all day long for 125 - 200 USD...

  • Are the stocks in great to excellent condition? Original finish? When I usually refer to "Good condition" I only mean the barrel, rifling, chamber, and overall condition of the bolt. It's the little things that bring it all together.

  • yea good condition

  • very nice rifle mate, any idea on the magnification on that scope?

  • where can i get a scope mount like that with scopr. Coming from canada would the company ship here. if you have web sites and info please forward. last ? do you think it would work on a mauser :) thanks again

  • That was refurbed by the Lithgow SAF. It's not a repro. No similar mount or scope is available at the moment. Only a few thousand of the originals were built. Beautiful rifles - It'd be the crux of my collection if i could find one.

  • from where he have that weapon?

  • Oooh, she's a beauty.

Nice collection you've got, keep it up :D

  • Very cool. Wonder how much that set you back? An oringinal M1903 A4 would probably set one back $4,000. Very cool.

  • thanks for the insight ...i have 1 have not shot it yet , looking forward too

  • im gonna make those for some 3d games

  • Thanks again for improving my knowledge of the Lee Enfield rifle

  • Good on you mate, keep the rifle collection coming, still like to see the rifles in action as well. thanks

  • I agree,absolutley awesome videos !!!!!
