YES, I moved here in 1975 and LOVE IT! It is no different than living in a hot place and not able to spend much time outdoors in the summer (Texas at 110 degrees). No one goes out then either. I like to stay inside when it gets cold, by the fireplace with a cup of hot cocoa!
After it gets about -20 it does not feel much colder. THOUGH when it has been -50 for a week or so and it warms up to -10 it feels like a heat wave. Vehicles notice the difference. A car that will start at -20 may not at -50.
It WAS -50 and if you saw what school kids got off the bus wearing you would be amazed. I have seen kids go out in shorts at -20. We are a tough bunch up here.
no way in hell would i be out there in a shirt i dont go outside without a hood if its like 50 to 60 and a heavy jacket if its below that but hey im from the south so thats what im use to is warm weather
More than a couple of minutes and you're feeling it. Any time I tried to go more than a minute or two without gloves my hands began to hurt. Fairbanks has a cold that gets into the bones.
If the human body is around 98 degrees, wouldn't you steam in that temperature? I've read that it's possible to stick your hand in liquid nitrogen for under a second because the temp. difference is so great it takes a while for it to fully freeze your hand or something
This may sound like a stupid question but I'm serious. Does the hot water ever turn to instant ice when you toss it at certain temperatures or is that just some movies I have seen? I went to AK two summers ago and got to experience -40 in a type of controlled environment. The water turned to steam but I am curious if it could just turn immediately to ice at even lower temperatures then -40 or warmer like -20?
would it be so weird if the alaskan kids move to Florida or Arizona where there's usually a 95 degree or even a 100 degree temp especially in the summer and they are used to cold weather...Would they survive the heat?
I lived in fairbanks for 4 years whil in the army. I have taken the garbage out at -68 with just short sleeves and flip flops. ur body gets adjusted to the cold. plus there is very little wind and the humidity is about 6%.
In a T-shirt? amateur haha, i go outside in -100 COMPLETELY naked. AND i dip my pecker in the snow just to show how pro i really am. Jealous? of course you are ;D
@alaskanprinter... dude so let me get this right you expect everyone on here to believe it is 50 degrees below zero which is 82 degrees below freezing and you are outside in a teeshirt and no winter gear of any kind.. ok.... right... have fun in your fantasy world.. im leaving because i perfer reallity
@wintercat2 look up the meaning artic desert, means its a dry cold, not a wet cold, and you dont see your breath that often. and the water turns into powder, not ice. we adjust fine so yes we got pretty cold.
Definately very cold, some of the water turns instantly to ice in the air, of course some will hit the ground unfrozen because the larger droplets have small surface area relative to their volume so they can't lose heat quickly enough to freeze straight away. but it will freeze very quickly once on the ground.
If you think otherwise, look again, its obvious to me. Definately VERY COLD indeed.
@peterfarrow - No need to look again, if water is warmer than the air temp. the water will steam, same as boiling a kettle. It doesn't freeze, (turn to snow or ice) it just steam from the water cooling quickly. But still, all the water is falling back to the ground as a liquid. Impossible for the water to freeze in 2 seconds.
Quote "Impossible for the water to freeze in 2 seconds"
Thats not true its very possible, it depends on the droplet size, at -50F fairly large droplets can freeze in under 2 seconds, you are mistaking fine frozen water particles for steam, so yes "look again" and go brush up on your physics, and no I won't be trying to explain it to you again.
@peterfarrow - I don't blame you for not wanting to explain it to me again, cause you're wrong. I live in Canada and have done this in -40c over pavement. Every drop of water falls back to the ground as a liquid, now if you tossed it off a 20 story building it would freeze but sure as hell not in seconds. But its spring now so I'm done with the -40 talk.
@wintercat2 If proof from many other videos, personal experience, and Physics didn't exist your comment might of had a change (slight) at making sense. :D
@wintercat2 Sorry I was high xD, love starting shiz over youtube, it's funny to see the rage people build up over things. Unfortunately, you kept you're cool =P. But yeah you're right, the water doesn't freeze instantly, just steams. which is why it floats away instead of dropping to the ground like..... ice. lol
Your body adjusts to it being so cold. Last winter we had a day that was 50 above and one week later -61 in January and I sweated my balls off because my body was still in cold mode. Best way I can put it is Cold is Cold 0 to -60 is all the same unless you look at your heating bill.
thats cold water ! wow it must have been cold but a T shirt brrr . well i suppose its only for a short period of time (i live in fairbanks ak to) =] yey its getting warm here again, man it got to like -60 this year.
Trust me, it was -50 F and you can survive just fine for a short period. Growing up here the kids dont think much about it. I once rescued a young lady whose car broke down and she was wearing sandals and a dress. Fortunately I showed up when I did, she could have been in trouble at those temperatures. Kids today...
alaskan kids must have winter coat jacket built-in to survive that cold. I'v seen so many hot waters tossed in extreme temp. What happen if you toss a cold water in -50? Fairbanks weather is in all below zero..
Nothing happens with cold water. The difference between -50 outside air and hot water (over 200 degrees) makes the water like 250 degrees so it turns to steam. Something to do with air pressure as well. It is cool and makes a loud noise. Ah the joys of living in Alaska
Yeah, My cousin who lived in North Pole Alaska, said when its that cold, people stop for everybody, no matter what, as opposed to the the rest of this paranoid country who would stop for no one.

-50 is cold to us, but for you lower 48 people, its like deathly cold, AlaskanPrinter hes right. Its possible to survive in it for a short period of time.
@EvolutionIXRR He most certainly can survive -50 for that long.. a short period of time, running outside for a minute or something is fine... you would'nt want to go much longer than 10 minutes or so tho without a proper coat.
@EvolutionIXRR I go outside all the time with t-shirts when its 50 below zero. Alaskans are just plain tougher than lower 48 foaks I guess. But believe these comments. Going outside for short periods of time in even 60 or 70 below zero is no problem. Going in and out is easy. Staying outside for more than 5 minutes in those temps you definitely want some good cover . Its only 45 below zero right now. A warm spell.
@EvolutionIXRR really? you obviously live no where cold so you have no room to talk. at that tempurature you could easily last outside for 15 minutes before hypothermia kicks in. you start loosing feeling in you finger and toes after about 2 minutes, but its really not that cold, anything past -25 feels the same, i've lived in Fairbanks my whole life.
Yes, I know where that is. We keep the fire stoked when it gets that cold, but really, it is just part of the excitement of living in The LAST FRONTIER!
