80s :) Back then both commercial and song made a big explosion. She ruled the world with "Like a Prayer" and after more then 20 yrs the song is still so catchy.
It's a commercial Madonna did for Pepsi for the release of her Like A Prayer album and song. A week later she released the real video for Like A Prayer with herself dancing in front of the burning crosses and Pepsi went apeshit and pulled this commercial off the air, but Madonna kept the 5 million dollars and the controversy made her record sales go through the roof makinf Like A Prayer one of her most successful albums.
That long dark hair suited her so well, why in hell did she go short and blond again? That blond hair (like she had during Blond Ambition) made her look so vulgair. Well, that's Madonna right? prefering vulgair looks over class. Such a shame, she's beautiful with dark hair!
The original video had people in a rage! The Vatican was pissed because a Southern gospel choir was dancing around singing spirituals in a Catholic church. The haters were pissed because Madonna was kissing the feet and then making out with a black Jesus. The black community was pissed because not only do the cops unjustly lock up another innocent brother, but even the Church keeps the black Jesus behind bars. So Pepsi pulled their $5M ad campaign. <3 Madonna 4 having the guts 2 write this!
The Vatican should be ashamed, I'm Catholic and I know they were wrong for condemning this. She doesn't make out with Jesus. Its just a kiss on the forehead and cheek. The point that she was trying to make is that, people are treated unfairly.
@verizon20051 It's hard to tell which character is making out with Madonna in the "Like A Prayer" video, the black man captured by police or the "black saint" that came to life from a statue, but she does make out with one of them at 4:08 in the video. She's laying down with candles behind her, and he's on top of her kissing her on the lips. The black victim & black saint are played by the same actor, but because Madonna is having a dream in the video, it's not exactly clear what's happening ;)
This NEVER should of been banned but Pepsi had to pay her any way so she won in the end & she won tons of awards in 1989 @ the Mtv Awards show for "Like a Prayer" & "Express your self" &she did that kick A** Performance of Express your self. I LOVE Madonna & have since she 1st came out.I have been to the following Madonna concerts-WTG Tour-87Blond Ambition World Tour-90-The Girlie Show World Tour-93-Drowned World Tour-2000-Re-Invention World Tour-04-Confessions Tour-06-Sticky & Sweet Tour-08
* Like a prayer listed in reverse or backwards she is referring to the devil calling out to satan. I bet you never knew that she is a freemason.
* "Life is a mystery" part when played backwards says "Devil I worship you"
* She is calling out to the devil. Many songs out there were there is similar meanings when played backwards wake up people (she is singing about oral sex) you having a laugh.
* Look to the ground @ 1:11 (The same ground of the Masonic Temples)
@icily7 YOU ARE A FRIGGIN LIAR,I Work in a club every FRI,SAT,SUN I am a performer so i know SEVERAL DJ'S & after seeing your post i had them play it back words & 6 like a prayer remixes & well gee nothing about the devil AKA Satan or madonna or anyone else referring to the devil calling out to satan. So i guess she's not a a freemason.
I remember !!!!! I was a kid I really liked the song at the time I asked a lot of times my cousin to make me double cassette, but I did not know the title and asked him "the Madonna song of Pepsi" and of course he was blackmailing me saying" if I do not I do not understand about the title song is " : D
That's not the ad I remember - I think it was shown once during the Bill and that was it - pulled... new it would be hard to find having only aired once in the UK!
it wasn't just that their was a black jesus it was because she was dancing in front of burning crosses and thats like klu klux klan stuff thats the main reason they pulled the sponsership and because so many people were gonna boycot their products
Thank you, thanks a lot sekwille for posting this, I saw this commercial on national tv a coupple of times and it´s a classic. In addition to that, "like a prayer" is one of my favorite Maddonna's song. Greetings from Chile.
I remember when I was younger. They did not show this commercial, because of Like a Prayer. She was dancing, simulating sex with a Black Jesus. What Michael Jackson did for minorities, Madonna did for women. She is an amazing artist.
@Mymoonlightray It was NOT a black Jesus! It was St Martin De Porres, a Dominican Friar who was black. And really the video had nothing to do with the commercial.
@robinquinc329 I love how a lot of the controversy around her video was because people would rather ignorantly believe that it's a black Jesus, and how wrong they think it is to portray Jesus as black. Really, people are stupid, and create controversy where there is none. I'd never heard of St. Martin De Porres, but when I saw the video, my first instinct said "that's some black saint," not "that's Jesus! And he's black!"
And then Pepsi, being the niggards they are, pulled their sponsorship.
@Gooseage Everything that you said is so true. I always felt that people made a big controversy out of nothing. In the end, she came out with even more publicity than if they had done nothing. I always felt that catholics should have known that it was a St. not Jesus. Just goes to show how well they know their own religion.
@Gooseage The controversy had nothing to do with Jesus being black, it was because she made out with him in the video. People were offended by the fact that Madonna was getting it on with Jesus. Some people might have been offended by a black Jesus, but that wasn't why people got so upset and definitely not why Pepsi pulled the ad. Of course, Madonna was so hot back then, anybody would have been happy to get it on with her.
@verizon20051 Right, it wasn't even much of a kiss, it was severely overblown, but it had nothing to do with race. I remember the controversy and I don't remember one person saying anything about the "Jesus" being black.
@Gooseage Saint Martin de Porres was the first back man ever to become a catholic saint. He was born in Lima (then called "City of the Kings") capital of Peru in 1579, when Lima was the most important center of spanish power in South America. He was the ilegitim son of a white noble man and a black slave. He wanted to become a dominican monk since early age but his request was denied several times because of his color. However he was admited later because of his fathers noble line.
@Gooseage During his life he was famous among the people in Lima as a real living saint for the numerous miracles he performed on a daily basis. Many people including the viceroy used to ask him for advice. He died around 1640. When the Like a Prayer video came out obviosuly It call atention the figure of this black man saint, but It wasnt much of a big deal since there was not direct association. The producers probably got no idea of Saint Martin of Porres.
Ive always liked madonna..try to watch the sequence on 1:43 - 1:44 - thats the classic Madonna whirl..her face and her expression while twirling captures the essence of the song...love this one!!!!
This is the original advert. The video with the burning crosses is a different video she made for the complete song as a chart single release. Pepsi had to withdraw the commercial after only 1 showing as Madonna released the other video at the same time. The public went nuts over the content of it which shed a very different light on the innocent pepsi commercial! Madonna still walked away with the full fee though! very smart women!
Wait a min...in the bio underneath the vid, it is stated that Pepsi kept sponsoring her, after her video debuted on MTV...? I've heard time and time again, that Pepsi dropped the deal, and never aired the ad again. Also I thought it was a $1 dollar ad. Would someone be kind enough to shed some light on me?
@mrmusiclover87 they stopped showing the commerical and they pulled their sponsership for her blond ambition tour but she got to keep the 5 million they gave her
This commercial was written by the brother of one of my friends, who also wrote the Robert Palmer "Addicted To Love" Pepsi commercial. He said that Madonna refused to say the word "Pepsi" in her song. Also, the images on the TV where the little girl is playing with her dolls are based on Carol's (my friend's) childhood. She was really into her Barbies especially, and still has them!
THIS is the video of "Like A Prayer" that I like!!! I remember that Madonna looked incredibly HOT for this video. And then she had to go an ruin it by changing it. UGH.
the funny thing is the Catholics will allow pedophiles and abuse in the Catholic Church, but yet, they don't allow Gays, Lesbians, Transgenders, and Bisexuals, and open minded people like our girl Madonna here to speak their mind! YOU GO MADONNA! p.s. I wasn't able to see this on TV either when it first aired - I was 6 years old @ the time! besides, from what I've studied about the Torah and Bible, everyone during the Bible times was a little darker skinned, almost tanned! sheesh!
you know this is crazy because of the like a prayer video they dropped there sponsoring for her tour and she still got to keep the 5 million dollars they her. Thats crazy madonna was on the winning side of that deal
The controversy is, that the actual video of the song she had some rather unsavory images, on depicting an African-American Jesus, so pepsi pulled her, and that is why
@zitalee2 I think it's a pretty good bet. In old movies, the producers would sometimes get boys to play the part of girls, especially when they wanted the scene to have a creepy effect. I think Madonna does this alot.
na take madonna as a serious soul, way back ago she wore a t shirt preach 'it takes 20 dumb animals to make a fur coat but only 1 to wear it' now da lowlife bitch pays dem big bucks to support the enslaving, torturing an skinning alive of gods creatures for her false vanity, check da fur farm vidz on youtube 2 c wot she tinks is acceptable to promote in 21st century, fur an fur trim b da height of lowlife taste, kabbalah, is a joke. check 'ANTI FUR SOCIETY' on google, SEE DA TRUTH 4 YA SELVES
@Mysterwright Back then it was just Madonna and MJ who dominated pop culture. There hasn't been anyone since to dominate that way. You gotta love the 80's!
@mpg272727 What a dumb ass. Have you ever been to church. You oughta try it sometime, you'll see lots of people down on their knees with their hands clenched together
I think we should all email pepsi and demand that they play and release this pepsi commercial, cant believe they pulled this class act video for pepsi ,its a classic, pepsi is kicking there buts, and it made Madonna alot of money.
such a sweet and innocent video - she going back to her childwood memories. who could know then that this WASNT the official video clip. Madonna is music and culture genius. She knew what was going to happen...
@pandemits I thought the whole thing was ridiculous. If it really was that offensive, then the song and ALBUM wouldn't have gone multi-platinum and she wouldn't have continued to have sell out concerts around the world. Or am I missing something here. The only people that were offended were those that don't live in the real world. She knows who her audience is.
@BlogShag Whether the people SHOULD be offended was not the issue I wanted to make. The thing is that Madonna knew that it would stir up a huge controversy (that is, huge publicity), as it did happen.... She then took advantage of it, to sell more records etc... Great genius. Anyway, controversy or not, the "Like a Prayer" video is one of the best , ever....
@trnyack well actualy the character depicted was meant to be jesus so the idea that the son of god had sex and was black pissed of alot of christians(she was the Dan Brown of her day) oooh and there was the burning crosses.
@trnyack , No in the video , she had sex with a priest who was black. It was her way of saying how ridiculous Catholicism and all these huge religious groups are.. I happen to agree.
@trnyack That wasn't a depiction of God. That was a depiction of a priest. and he was black. Oh my God! Big black priest dick, how could she? LOL! Hilarious if you ask me. Simpletons fell for it, hook line and sinker everytime she pulled this nonsense. The effect was all in her favor --- multi-platinum record sales, and sold out concerts around the world , and it also made her the richest pop music star in history. Make no mistake, this is one SMART woman.
@trnyack the video (which is a masterpiece, imo) is delibaretly open to many interpretations. Her character falls asleep and dreams that (or she really does!!) makes love with the Black Jesus (according to some, is not Him, but a saint...). Anyway, in the burning crosses dancing scene, one make take it that she condemns KKK (e.e. racism) or... the church! (imo, only KKK, since she is a religious person and then she was not yet a follower of Kabbala).
@trnyack - But back in 1989, and I'm not defending the mentality, we (as a country of people just were not evolved like that. I will forever love the 80's (it's when I grew up) but it like it had it good times (music, movies, tv, cartoons, etc), it did have it's bad times, and back then, it still was a "a big to do" as foreign as it may sound to some 19 year old of today.

mrmusiclover87 1 year ago
@mrmusiclover87 they stopped showing the commerical and they pulled their sponsership for her blond ambition tour but she got to keep the 5 million they gave her

This commercial was written by the brother of one of my friends, who also wrote the Robert Palmer "Addicted To Love" Pepsi commercial. He said that Madonna refused to say the word "Pepsi" in her song. Also, the images on the TV where the little girl is playing with her dolls are based on Carol's (my friend's) childhood. She was really into her Barbies especially, and still has them!

the funny thing is the Catholics will allow pedophiles and abuse in the Catholic Church, but yet, they don't allow Gays, Lesbians, Transgenders, and Bisexuals, and open minded people like our girl Madonna here to speak their mind! YOU GO MADONNA! p.s. I wasn't able to see this on TV either when it first aired - I was 6 years old @ the time! besides, from what I've studied about the Torah and Bible, everyone during the Bible times was a little darker skinned, almost tanned! sheesh!

The controversy is, that the actual video of the song she had some rather unsavory images, on depicting an African-American Jesus, so pepsi pulled her, and that is why

zitalee2 1 year ago
@zitalee2 I think it's a pretty good bet. In old movies, the producers would sometimes get boys to play the part of girls, especially when they wanted the scene to have a creepy effect. I think Madonna does this alot.

such a sweet and innocent video - she going back to her childwood memories. who could know then that this WASNT the official video clip. Madonna is music and culture genius. She knew what was going to happen...
pandemits 2 years ago 6
@pandemits I thought the whole thing was ridiculous. If it really was that offensive, then the song and ALBUM wouldn't have gone multi-platinum and she wouldn't have continued to have sell out concerts around the world. Or am I missing something here. The only people that were offended were those that don't live in the real world. She knows who her audience is.
BlogShag 1 year ago
@BlogShag Whether the people SHOULD be offended was not the issue I wanted to make. The thing is that Madonna knew that it would stir up a huge controversy (that is, huge publicity), as it did happen.... She then took advantage of it, to sell more records etc... Great genius. Anyway, controversy or not, the "Like a Prayer" video is one of the best , ever....
pandemits 1 year ago
I really don't understand what all the fuss was about, so what if God was depicted as a black man. Aren't we just a bit more evolved than that?
trnyack 2 years ago 20
It wasn't that God was depicted as a black man. It's that people of different color should also be treated as 'sacred'.
alsmiith 2 years ago 3
um, they were BURNING CROSSES!!!
jellyrcw11 2 years ago
@trnyack well actualy the character depicted was meant to be jesus so the idea that the son of god had sex and was black pissed of alot of christians(she was the Dan Brown of her day) oooh and there was the burning crosses.
MrTvoreo 2 years ago 6
@trnyack , No in the video , she had sex with a priest who was black. It was her way of saying how ridiculous Catholicism and all these huge religious groups are.. I happen to agree.
BlogShag 1 year ago
@trnyack That wasn't a depiction of God. That was a depiction of a priest. and he was black. Oh my God! Big black priest dick, how could she? LOL! Hilarious if you ask me. Simpletons fell for it, hook line and sinker everytime she pulled this nonsense. The effect was all in her favor --- multi-platinum record sales, and sold out concerts around the world , and it also made her the richest pop music star in history. Make no mistake, this is one SMART woman.
BlogShag 1 year ago
@trnyack the video (which is a masterpiece, imo) is delibaretly open to many interpretations. Her character falls asleep and dreams that (or she really does!!) makes love with the Black Jesus (according to some, is not Him, but a saint...). Anyway, in the burning crosses dancing scene, one make take it that she condemns KKK (e.e. racism) or... the church! (imo, only KKK, since she is a religious person and then she was not yet a follower of Kabbala).
pandemits 1 year ago
@trnyack - But back in 1989, and I'm not defending the mentality, we (as a country of people just were not evolved like that. I will forever love the 80's (it's when I grew up) but it like it had it good times (music, movies, tv, cartoons, etc), it did have it's bad times, and back then, it still was a "a big to do" as foreign as it may sound to some 19 year old of today.
