I remember seeing this, or hearing the story about this many years ago. Did he actually finish the concert by playing the set songs or did they just noodle around like what is shown on this video?
@soakthisup I went to this concert when I was 15...with my very first bf. Scott Halpin, the drummer, played the rest of the show with them, though since I'm old and senile now, I don't recall how much longer it lasted;-) Don't remember anything else about the show except this whole thing with Keith. And the crowd was SO supportive of Scott.
It's like that tranquilizer restarted his drumming skills from Godly, to God like. He still sounded epic. The guy lived like a true rock star. He died trying to get his life back together however. RIP
can you imagine that happening to the so called BIG bands nowadays...the drummer conking out and asking an audience member to step in...NOOOO FUCKIN CHANCE!!...
I was at this show. My first Who concert. Amazing that Keith could do anything at all. He passed out twice before a replacement was brought in for a few songs. Keith eventually came back to finish the show. How anyone can play the drums while drunk is beyond me.
Yeah, I heard Roger & Pete repeat this story! HAHAHA Someone told him he'd get an interesting buzz if he took A PIECE of one! He said, A piece, I'm Keith Moon, N the MANIAC swallowed FOUR of them N passed out behind the drum kit!! Is there any WONDER a movie's in the works about this man's life???????
@DeepSnowBand hi, just quick info. in rolling stone magazine , shortly after moon died , Rodger d thanked him for bringing the band back together, cold harsh and true. cheers .
Mind blowing to see this! I was there! I remember wondering why Pete was kicking the cymbal til I noticed someone was missing. They didn't show the part where Bill Graham came out and announced that a doctor was looking at him and that he'd be back in 10 minutes. Wild memory but bummer of a concert. Never got to see the Who again until after Keith was gone.
You are lucky.Alledgedly when he was given the tranquilizers by a fan, they asked him if he could handle it and he said."Of Course,Im Keith Fucking Moon".Great.
@jlbaker2000 "...Thomas Scot Halpin (February 3, 1954 – February 9, 2008) was an artist and musician noted for sitting in for The Who's Keith Moon during a rock concert at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. In 1973 he was awarded Rolling Stone magazine's "Pick-Up Player of the Year Award" for his historic performance during this show.[1]...' wiki
What a selfish, neurotic asshole Moon was. Lacking respect for himself, his band-mates and most importantly, his public he allows himself to loose control of himself at WORK. No wonder Buddy Rich scoffed at most of the "high as a kite" hippie drummers, they knew very little of their musical craft and even less about self control.
@LvnAction Drugs or no drugs and leaving his self destructive lifestyle behind, he remains one of the greatest drummers of all time, perhaps the greatest.
Considering that Keith was high and drunk as a motherfucker for his entire career with The Who this being the only time that he was unable to perform makes the fit that you just pitched unwarranted, especially when you consider that stories vary from Keith being slipped the drug to whomever gave it to him outright lying about what it was and what it would do to him.
As over half of Buddy Rich's band were heroin users that's a rich case of the pot calling the kettle a drug addict.
@LvnAction huh? jazz players were the ones responsible for introducing drugs (particularly marijuana and heroin) into the music world. An entire drug culture developed around musicians in the 40s, which spilled over into rock star mythology. Were it not for uppers, downers and other mind and metabolism altering substances, hardly anyone would have showed up at gigs. it was practical matter for many of them that only later turned addictive and deadly.
I'm only rehashing other peoples' views, but imagine this: You like The Who. You play drums. You like Keith Moon. You see him have some kind of physical melt-down on the stage. You wind up playing Keith Moon's drums with the other members of The Who. Despite being worried about Moon's well-being, that had to be Halpin's (Halprins? sp.) ultimate fantasy. And I'm sure Moon himself was grateful for the bail-out.
Well according to his personal assistent Douglas Butler it was MUCH more dramatic than that. Prior to his collaps Butler and a local doctor was supposed to have injected both Keith´s ankles simultaniously to keep him going a bit further. But in the end he did collaps. Read the book "Moon the Loon",,,, its a fantastic story about some of Keiths life. The moral of the story is NEVER GO BACK TO A DRINK you left to take a leak. Someone puts something in it. Keith had a mental illness and if he was alive today he'd be on some kind of medication to help even him out. Don't know if it would've affected his amazing drumming, but isn't it more important to be healthy and not so fucked up in the head? The kid who filled in for him was named Scott Halpin, who moved to the Bay Area from Iowa in 1973 and went to the Who show with a friend. He was a musician and an artist and passed away in 2008 of a brain tumor.
Actually it was a horse tranquilizer. I think a gorilla tranquilizer would have killed him. And actually he did it because he was really addicted to drugs. He took it with whiskey. That's fucking hardcore.

c'est trop triste moony n'avait pas que de bonnes idées c'est bete qu'il soit mort en 1978 c'etait surement un super gars alors hommage a ce drole de bonshomme qu'on a bien aimer
if one of the todays bands, specially the emos or trendy bands, and one of the members get flu, or a broken nail, so they screw up the gig and then send their fans to their homes, sweet homes; if like that band would be telling you: 'go and buy our songs and get your ipod or mp4 and you can keep listening us and then you can imagine the band playing in the gig ; because the show must go on''
i dont think that Pete knew what he was saying at the time when he said they werent a grojup without Keith. but that dude who filled in must of had a blast, lucky fan.
They showed this on VH1s top 100 music momments. HD aparently took horse tranqulizers on a dare. Stating that quote "give me that I am Fucking Keith Moon I can do that shit" yeah ur Keith Moon but ah dude it's horse tranqs this will nock anyone out!
Didn't know this video existed till it came up on a show here in NZ. What a flashback! I was at that concert and will remember that moment FOREVER! The Who still rock!
Hand to God, so was I! Cow Palace, San Francisco, 1973. The lucky stiff who got to play with them came from Walnut Creek, as I recall. He did a superb job considering the circumstances, and the gus were very appreciative (as was the crowd)!
I thought of this during the Super Bowl this year (feeling sad, missing Keith and John), and told my buddy about it. Then during the VH1 show, this comes on! I'd hardly thought of it for 25+ years, then within 3 months, it all comes rushing back.
@gvanbusk Pete and Roger: to you and your mates now and those who've gone before -- you were the best live rock act ever. Those who missed it live are the poorer for it. Your music, musicianship, and spirit helped me and millions of others soar, and these images of you make this old man feel like a teenager again -- thanks for the memories!
Scot Halpin (February 3, 1954 February 9, 2008) was an artist and musician noted for sitting in for The Who's Keith Moon during a rock concert at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. keith moon is one of the few musicians that can make or break a concert. This is only example of him breaking it

if one of the todays bands, specially the emos or trendy bands, and one of the members get flu, or a broken nail, so they screw up the gig and then send their fans to their homes, sweet homes; if like that band would be telling you: 'go and buy our songs and get your ipod or mp4 and you can keep listening us and then you can imagine the band playing in the gig ; because the show must go on''

@RubberSoul846 I looked it up, it was 1973. if it wouldve been 1975, Keith Moon would have gained weight by then

Just think of it.... If you were the substitute drummer picked from the crowd, NOBODY but NOBODY would ever believe you.

ThePrinzessinAshley 2 years ago 8
@ThePrinzessinAshley Probably just to keep him awake, make sure he's alright to play and make sure he's responsive since he's just passed out.

Wikipedia says, he is. He died last year:
Scot Halpin (February 3, 1954 February 9, 2008) was an artist and musician noted for sitting in for The Who's Keith Moon during a rock concert at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. In 1973 he was awarded Rolling Stone magazine's "Pick-Up Player of the Year Award" for his historic performance during this show
