It should be noted that it's the Vienna Philharmonic under Claudio Abbado that's accompanying Mme. von Otter in this absolutely-Heavenly song (and this IS a song in all truth!)
The best I've heard in this song cycle. My fave. The weight of her voice, the expression, the lilt - can't believe I'm attempting to learn these. Ah well - it's just too gorgeous to pass up ;-)
Of the 1st three of these "Seven Early Songs" of Berg, this third one truly is WONDERFUL!! Absolutely haunting - had he not gone atonal under his teacher Schoenberg's influence, he really could have extended the life of tonality not a little bit longer yet. Post-Romanticism didn't need to die that quickly or be ridiculed that severely by the likes of Stravínskiy, Schoenberg or whoever was guilty thereof...
Definitely the very best rendition of this one of the "Sieben frühe Lieder" by Berg that this writer has ever heard, from all the selections that are at this point available on YouTube!!!
This is just the perfect voice-quality I could envision for this piece - also a beautiful balance between the voice and the orchestra!!! Compared to this, Renée Fleming most definitely sounds like an "also-ran", while Cheryl Studer - though better than Fleming - still doesn't match von Otter!!
[This is not meant to pan Ms. Fleming overall by any means in this song (in itself, her performance is definitely very good!): it's just that Frau Von Otter does things so beautifully in this particular piece as to make it hard for anybody to match!!!]
Hi everyone, just want to say to everyone here whoever you are: I wish you a very happy New Year - all the best wishes and happiness for 2010..... RoniM

This song concludes in some way the culmination of the Western European civilization.
