On the whole, I found Momiji to be one of the most annoying characters in the series...

HOWEVER, this and the "Foolish traveler" scene are probably the 2 standout moments in the series... both monologued by him!

Dubbed/Subbed anime is notorious for not being a verbatim translation from the original japanese... Although I dont speak/read Japanese and have not read the manga on which the anime is based, I would hazzard a guess that originally she said something more like "My biggest regret is that I can't love him" or something similar.

Manga owners/Japanese speakers etc might help clarify this?

I don't know if that's truely accurate but usually the manga, and even the japanese english subbed episodes usually use harsher words. Translators sugarcoat it a lot...

"When a mother has a child of the zodiac...she will either be overly protective of it or reject it completely"...

The truth in life is not everyone has our moral concept of what is and isn't OUR fault (or Momiji's in this case). Just as though, you may agree that what she did is wrong (as do I) others may side with the mother. Natsuki Takaya wanted us to see it from THIS point of view...that not every mother can bare it. Momiji is mature enough to accept it (even though it kills him inside) and it's even worse in the end. Momiji loves his parents, so he will do anything for them.
