I totally agree with all of you. If Arc System Works did the Blazblue series with 2D gameplay (with either 2.5D or 3D battlegrounds), & if SNK Playmore did the same thing with KOF XIII, then why can't they do the same thing with SS? Is it THAT hard for them to do?

This is annoying. On the videos of this game I watch the AI just stand there. These videos aren't showing me if this game is challenging or worth playing.
this version of samurai showdown sucks because of bad controls and bad presentation in the characters move sets. In all of the samurai showdown games I have never had this much trouble getting the moves down. The controls is horrible and the character moves look weak at best. If SNK wanted to revitalize the samurai showdown franchise they should've went with hi-res 2d drawings with over-the-top-moves.
So the only reason no one likes this game is because it is too different from its original format? Or is it glitchy or plays bad? Looks like a descent game to me, but I do agree it couldve been much more colorful, had the camera zoom in/out when they moved away or towards each other and so they could make bigger jumps, and had the moves and hits be flashier (I didnt notice any projectiles or the dog or the eagle)... like their predecessors.

"is a real punch in the gut to the fans" sums this up perfectly. I've been playing Sam Sho since I first grasped that Sam Sho 2 joystick at the Arcade. I'm not going to foolishly proclaim that Sam Sho should always stay 2D, but I do have some expectations of it keeping to its roots somewhat.

@MultiWtfwtfwtf I know that. (IV is my favorite.) While SSS was indeed bad, it wasn't because it was 3D but because it was just all-around badly done, and is a real punch in the gut to the fans. No more projectiles, no more specials, the unique flow of the 2D games is nowhere to be found because the game itself is completely different.

3d games don't have a 2d combat ready style(yet) there more suited for close range hand to hand combat,rather than fencing
You know I was ready to say this game Sucked my gigantic penis...Then I played an online match and was shocked I got one now the more I play it the more depth I find. It's not without flaws the sound is muffled and the models aren't well animated but if you look for it there is depth. This could have been so much more though with some fine tuning we'd have had the perfect mix of Soul Calibur and Bushido Blade

Why just for the PS3? Because you own it? The series appeared on a Nintendo console too (there was a GameCube one). It should be multi-platform, amongst at least the PS3 and 360.

Bought this game yesterday for $29.99. I spent about an hour with it getting through the learning curve phase. This game is not as bad as some people have stated. Like I said in other posts, it is not Tekken 6, Super Street Fighter IV, Soul Calibur IV, Virtua Fighter 5 or Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. But, I am having fun playing the game. Some of the stages do actually have people in the background doing things. The field stages (night and day versions) are pretty sharp. Good stage music. 7/10.
I think many websites and consumers are unhappy with this game because they are thinking about the Samurai Shodown games of old.; which I love 1-6. Seems the developers were trying to do something a little different with the franchise. They did try to play on the Samurai Shodown fame and fans. It is only $29.99 now. I think Imma pick this one up now; even if just as a novelty item. Yes, it could have been better, but it also could have been worse. A Samurai game like Blazblue would have worked.
The game may not be that great. There are so many better ones like: Tekken 6, Super Street Fighter IV, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, Soul Calibur IV, Virtua Fighter 5, heck even Dead Or Alive 4 and Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe as far as 3-D fighters go. Kyoshiro (Kee-o-Shee-ro) seems to be one of the best looking fighters in the game; seems more attention to detail was put into his character model. When the price drops low (like $20), it is worth buying as a novelty item.

Something different to play until Blazblue: Continuum Shift comes out next month. We gotta wait until 2011 for Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Mortal Kombat. And no word on when The King Of Fighters XIII will be released on consoles (yes, Mai and Yuri are back).

Only 12 of the 24 characters in this game are Japanese. 2 are other Northeast Asians, and the rest are other races. Jinbei is the only new Japanese character and his design looks pretty boring. and then we have some lame designs like Afro Samurai and Hagar the Horrible.

I've been playing SS since 1993 and this game is just as unappealing as SS64, take a look at it, it should be called SamuraiCalibur, the mechanics and the fighting pace is almost the same, the characters lack a lot of detail and being a 3D game obviously it sufers from the abscense of color, there's no story for the fight, just a generic bunch of phrases put together making it not a quest like the previous games, but more like a tournament.
I can't emphasise enough the lack of color, the 2D games were literally beautiful, with colorful characters and backgrounds, but take a look at this, ¡it's all fucking brown and grey!, I can't believe they've done this while they could have done a good 2D game with rich detail and HD resolution.
@ Darksoul. Thanx man. It would seem to me that denying this game of it's graphical integrity, is just wrong. Although onw would say it should just stick to it's 2-D roots. for a game that's 100% centered around two people beating the fuck out of each other in a small arena, the graphics should be incredible because of having such a small environment to render, but they aren't. look at just cause 2. the close up character and backgrounds detail on JC2 beats the shit out of this and that graphics engine has a whole fucking island to render with massive skyscrapers and mountains that stretch for miles.
this game looks miserable and lazy. flat and dull boxy arenas + the gameplay looks the typical tedious as hell 2d in 3d affair. you have to be one hell of a fighting game enthusiast to want to spend any cash on this one.
they really need to stop shovelling out shitty revamps of old snk classics and actually work on a good solid game with some real worthwhile enhancements and features that give those classic games that true next-gen look and feel that they all deserve.

You may find this shocking, but look, there's a person out there who shares a not so positive "opinion" on this game:

i dig the menus...how they have an old japanese artistic aesthetic to them. But the game itself is soooo brown and the contrast seems way to harsh. I remember playing Samurai Showdown in the arcade at a movie theater when I was younger...loved it. This, however, looks like ass. I wish more fighters would stick to 2d. Developers haven't utilized how good 2d art can look in games. Like that new game, "Shank", has an amazing art style. Braid was a nice looking 2d game.

@MultiWtfwtfwtf I know that. (IV is my favorite.) While SSS was indeed bad, it wasn't because it was 3D but because it was just all-around badly done, and is a real punch in the gut to the fans. No more projectiles, no more specials, the unique flow of the 2D games is nowhere to be found because the game itself is completely different.

You know I was ready to say this game Sucked my gigantic penis...Then I played an online match and was shocked I got one now the more I play it the more depth I find. It's not without flaws the sound is muffled and the models aren't well animated but if you look for it there is depth. This could have been so much more though with some fine tuning we'd have had the perfect mix of Soul Calibur and Bushido Blade

Bought this game yesterday for $29.99. I spent about an hour with it getting through the learning curve phase. This game is not as bad as some people have stated. Like I said in other posts, it is not Tekken 6, Super Street Fighter IV, Soul Calibur IV, Virtua Fighter 5 or Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. But, I am having fun playing the game. Some of the stages do actually have people in the background doing things. The field stages (night and day versions) are pretty sharp. Good stage music. 7/10.

I think many websites and consumers are unhappy with this game because they are thinking about the Samurai Shodown games of old.; which I love 1-6. Seems the developers were trying to do something a little different with the franchise. They did try to play on the Samurai Shodown fame and fans. It is only $29.99 now. I think Imma pick this one up now; even if just as a novelty item. Yes, it could have been better, but it also could have been worse. A Samurai game like Blazblue would have worked.

The game may not be that great. There are so many better ones like: Tekken 6, Super Street Fighter IV, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, Soul Calibur IV, Virtua Fighter 5, heck even Dead Or Alive 4 and Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe as far as 3-D fighters go. Kyoshiro (Kee-o-Shee-ro) seems to be one of the best looking fighters in the game; seems more attention to detail was put into his character model. When the price drops low (like $20), it is worth buying as a novelty item.

Something different to play until Blazblue: Continuum Shift comes out next month. We gotta wait until 2011 for Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Mortal Kombat. And no word on when The King Of Fighters XIII will be released on consoles (yes, Mai and Yuri are back).

If it doesn't come out in the states (which it better), I will import it for PS3. That elephant background stage looks stunning. Only 12 of the 24 characters in this game are Japanese. 2 are other Northeast Asians, and the rest are other races. Jinbei is the only new Japanese character and his design looks pretty boring. and then we have some lame designs like Afro Samurai and Hagar the Horrible.

Not true. Some fighting games do there own things with weapons like this game & soul calibur. Some have a grea 3d realm with interactive arenas like mortal kombat & tekken. So why make every game go down those roads? Lets keep some classic & update them like Street fighter 4. You talk about the cookie cutter stuff but this looks like virtua fighter from saturn. Some games need to stay classic just introduce new modes & graphics.

I've been playing SS since 1993 and this game is just as unappealing as SS64, take a look at it, it should be called SamuraiCalibur, the mechanics and the fighting pace is almost the same, the characters lack a lot of detail and being a 3D game obviously it sufers from the abscense of color, there's no story for the fight, just a generic bunch of phrases put together making it not a quest like the previous games, but more like a tournament.

It got bashed so much, I thought that SNK was gonna be apprehensive about realeasing it state side, because of all the negative feed back? My only complaint about this game is, I don't like Sogetsu's (the water ninja) new stance. I like the old one better. it's not closed minded to find fault with a game..
for a game that's 100% centered around two people beating the fuck out of each other in a small arena, the graphics should be incredible because of having such a small environment to render, but they aren't. look at just cause 2. the close up character and backgrounds detail on JC2 beats the shit out of this and that graphics engine has a whole fucking island to render with massive skyscrapers and mountains that stretch for miles.

this game looks miserable and lazy. flat and dull boxy arenas + the gameplay looks the typical tedious as hell 2d in 3d affair. you have to be one hell of a fighting game enthusiast to want to spend any cash on this one.
they really need to stop shovelling out shitty revamps of old snk classics and actually work on a good solid game with some real worthwhile enhancements and features that give those classic games that true next-gen look and feel that they all deserve.

Money others will vouch for me in that regard, even thoguh they don't like the FIGHTING mechanics of the game. One other thing worth pointing out here is it doesn't take actual gameplay to see some of what's clearly letting it down. There's a number of dimwitted gamers who seem to think you have to play a game until you find the very first flaw in it. No, it's quite apparent enough that this game is graphically weak and tedious.
PS. interracial dating in itself isn't anything new. Maybe it's a new thing for those who come from a very unopen family background laced with prejudices and ignorance.

i dig the menus...how they have an old japanese artistic aesthetic to them. But the game itself is soooo brown and the contrast seems way to harsh. I remember playing Samurai Showdown in the arcade at a movie theater when I was younger...loved it. This, however, looks like ass. I wish more fighters would stick to 2d. Developers haven't utilized how good 2d art can look in games. Like that new game, "Shank", has an amazing art style. Braid was a nice looking 2d game.
