Take a look at China, a country which uses mostly on herbal treatments. People life better and longer. If you take a pill to make you feel good, what is the real problem. Sure some medicine might help you short-term but what happen to the causes? Medicine is patchwork at best.

Most mental illnesses are chemical disturbances which can be helped with by antipsychotics (atypical are preferred) or SSRI's. Not to give the answer to the disease, but to give the person enough strength to overcome it.
