  • I finally took time to watch this today...not bad my brother...not bad...thanks for the shout out in your vid comment section and thanks for posting the response video to mine. Peace and may you reach a million hits with it. BzB :-)

  • Sounds great man! Very few can play the pattern

  • Im lookin at you & this other guy by the name of Yogi Hollis Ford on here ,its a tie man yall both sound so GOOD. whats so amazing is yall are playin the real drums without all the drum machine added...bowing down to both you guys KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!!

  • I looked at other videos on youtube of this beat and I must say your the best so far...2 tumbs & a toe up!!!!

  • your immense dude! that was amazing :O

  • Hi Benno!

I uploaded a new live version of 777 on my youtube-site - check it out if you like. It´s from a special 80s funk night at a club in Stockholm. The song is awesome to play live...a real challenge, not only the drumpart as you know but hey the bassline is as tricky as hell to keep funky and tight too hehe. It´s one of the coolest funkclassics ever from the 80s. ;)

    Regards Tom

  • @apeacefulwarrior

    phat!

    thanx!

    all the best,

    b

  • This was always one of my favorite drum patterns performed on a drum machine and watching you just kill this on a physical drum set just increased my enjoyment of it immeasurably. You killed it, man. That was brilliant.

  • That was Hot!

  • go ahead boy! I love it!

  • i will try to do exactly so - thanks for chiming in, simone!

    ez,

    b

  • VERBATIM!

  • drezone,

that word is an absolute great one - thx for reminding me of it.

isnt there also a storage media brand, that goes by that great name?

anyway, thanx for stopping by for sure!

    b

  • Steelyben,

Dude, just listened to your rendition of the drum arrangement from 777-9311! That was Off The Chain!! That is one of the tightest drums on a song... EVER, and you nailed it! If I could only walk and chew gum at the same time.

Saw them live in '82 w Prince & Vanity 6. Time stole the show. Prince never let them out do him after that.

    Thanks again for your talent!

  • SmoovPlayer,

thanks a lot for the props - which to this extent are rather humbling!

Morris Day and his men were the literal SH*T, i absolutely agree with you here!

    all the best,

    b

  • Cool stuff! I don't know the song but I guess I need to check it out.

  • mike,

that is exactly how i came across that one :-)

    thanx for stopping by!

    b

  • great job!

  • thank you mr. dj!

    are you actually dj-ing?

    ez,

    b

  • actually i'm the guitarist for a band called Coup Detroit (koo-deh-twa) and i also play the drums a bit. i'm making a video of my rendition of the 777-9311 drum beat for all fellow enthusiasts to ponder, and i'm hoping you'll groove to it! dj

  • Yes!!

  • why, yes of course :-)

    thanx for stoppin by!

    ez,

    b

  • WOW!!! I love this!!!

  • hi feliamma,

    thank you for sharing!

    all the best to TX,

    b

  • Good shit my man. I can imagine how tight it would be if you kept your timing with a metronome. Outstanding.

  • reignman,

    thank you.

    regards,

    b

    ps: i think you can't :-)

  • You are the only drummer I've ever seen REALLY break it down, and I believed no one person could play this beat. thank you for proving me wrong

  • hey wess,

these are quite flattering words - thanx a lot!

geminidrums has played it almost like me, but i like his hihat sound better. it is played as a single-stroke-roll.

if you haven't yet, i recommend checking it out!

    all the best,

    b

  • I love the way you play it note for note looking so easy. I play this myself but I hit that second bar different. Ive been playing wrong since it came out. but only a real drummer would notice it. as a Drummer you have it more than close that IS the Beat!!! Good Job

  • hey gemini,

i love the way you play it! the singles on the hat really sound tight. i might try and incorporate that sticking in my cadence.

i went for ease of movement, but i like your sound better :-)

tough to get the 4e on the snare in second bar, i agree.

thanx a lot for stopping by!

    all the best,

    b

  • ty for the comp.

I think you might john blackwell plaiying 777-9311

    type:( 7-7-7-93-11 ) in search

  • Fantastic! Close enough to rock! You got a great funky feel in it, I know how very hard this is! Good job!

  • hey hnm,

thank you for taking the time to comment!

a great compliment from such a profound programmer!

    all the best,

    b

  • Comment removed

  • I'm impressed!! You know, Prince knew that beat wouldn't be able to be duplicated live, so you did remarkably.

  • brohoop,

    thanx a lot!

i think it is actually not all that hard if broken down correctly.

the only bummer is the linn-claps on 2+4, that we poor humans simply do not have enough limbs to execute at the same time :-)

maybe a motion sensor attached to the head, bobbin it backwards or such - iphone app, anyone? lol.

    all the best,

    b

  • The fact that you can slow it down like that is even more remarkable than playing it at speed! Now that I've watched it 50 times, I'm saying to myself--holy cow! Good job, and very much appreciated. I figure, with your help, in a few years I'll have the first bar down. =)

  • Amazing! It souds like in the original version! Great!!!!

  • very generous of you cemwen, thank you!

should have tweaked the kick sound a bit maybe, i think.

but it is what it is now :-)

    all the best,

    b

  • Amazing!

  • ...so are you - waves of creative contradiction, that's f*n brillant :-)

    thanx for stopping by!

    b

  • tight

  • thanx for leaving a note mate,

    always appreciated!

    all the best,

    b

  • Great job! This song has been a favorite of mine since I was a you girl. Thanks for posting.

  • thanx for chiming in and taking the time to leave a note!

    all the best,

    b

  • YOU did not deviate at all!! You played it perfectly!!! You have some MAD skills, man!!!

  • mtfune, good morning, sir,

thank you, i will gladly take "mr. highhat" as a new nick :-)

by the way, it is a zildjian a-custom 12" in this case, with a zig-zag bottom cymbal, so the air can vent fully when pressed together. i hope they make those still, cause miine is soon to fade...

    all the best,

    b

  • yOUR NEW NAME IS MR.HIGHHAT!!!

  • WOW!! YOU are REALLY KICK-ASS WITH THAT HIGH HAT!!!

  • Have a Fantastick Day More is Fonky Drummer ! Hihihi-hat!

    Tanxalot 4 u' r response Man.

Tu auras de mes nouvelles, et, by the way :

    ton Français est excellent !

  • Now that's how it goes down! yeah baby! =D

  • yeah, meanwhile, i am actually almost convinced, too.

i mean, the groove from the recording taken to the live kit, without the claps.

    on 2 and 4.

    damn those claps.

    :-)

    thanks for the props, m8!

    b

  • get someone to do the claps standing next to you while you play it ^^

  • ...that'd be cheating :-P

  • hahahahaha xD yea kinda..

u can hide him somewhere behind no one would notice ;P everyone would be like "wow.. where are the claps comin from??"

  • Your GOOD Man!..and generous! A lot of drummers just SHOULD see your video.

    Peace .

  • bonjour et bienvenue monsieur abalorladakor!

malheureusement mon francais est un peu endormie, mais c'est une bonne langue, ca!

thank you for chiming in and dropping a line! always sweet to read some peers feedback, seriously!

    all the best to france,

    b

  • Man! A great tutorial on a quite complicated groove... Needless to say a real tricky song to perform live! One of my absolute favorite funk-programmings however! Thanks alot for sharing...

  • a peaceful warrior - i relate quite a bit to that.

thanks for taking the tiime to comment!

funny, for the first time while i am typing, i just noticed that i can see just my feet on the top of the browser window -

    ballet, anyone?

    all the best,

    b

  • Well , I must say that I've seen a lot of drummers on youtube. This is simply the best , hands down !!!! Waaaaay too good ! Keep doing ya thing man !!!!

  • wow, wow, thank you, but that is a real humbling statement right there.

and although naturally i would not agree with you, i love the propeller you attached to my back with this, and will try to honor it and maintain my thing.

    thank you so much!

    b

  • That's fantastic, my favorite drum beat of all time.

  • yknow what? i just spend two hours going back to that time period - have you seen the footage of cameo on here?

sick! i am going to practice right now.

thanx for stopping by and dropping some!

    b

  • omg that was AMAZING!!!!!!!

  • thanks m8! highly appreciated :-)

now i should really go and make some more - i feel i learn a lot by doing this, too.

    b

  • i'm not a drummer but i can appreciate the intricacy of this piece. i would say i am a frustrated drummer at best and this sort of shit frustrates me even more! well done bro! this is funky.

    peace

  • peace is the word, man.

i am not out here to frustrate anyone.

thank you for the props, they are well appreciated!

    ez,

    b

  • haha, just to be clear i don't mean that YOU frustrate me, more that your DEMONSTRATION is so good that it frustrates me!

    stay funky

  • aight, mate, staying funky i can promise to try :-)

thanks again, and best of luck,

    b

  • WOW!! that was amazzzzing! i grew up listening to this song, I was 9 years old when the song came out by "The Time", a very hard beat to replicate, and i have to say you did it JUSTICE!

  • kricket - sounds fast, too :-)

thanks for the kind words there!

it IS a great cadence, so, any effort to get close is not a waste of time, for sure.

    thanx again,

    b

  • wow. yt managed to mess up the order the comments should be in ... so, if you should be interested to see what went down, i recommend clicking on "see all comments" way below.

they still kinda got it right there.

    ez,

    b

  • No harm intended. It sounded to me like my man was dissing you. I don't know. That's I said "if he was looking for perfection buy a damn MPC."

  • ...and no harm done - thanx for checking in again though!

i was just trying to be funny, which especially with a non-native speaker like me can sometimes backfire :-)

    ez,

    b

  • Awesome man!

  • thanx netta!

  • I tip my hat. Playing that groove on the hat is hard as $%#^. I don't care WHO you are. BTW Ikonski42 if you're looking for perfection buy you a damn MPC.

  • well, you don't have to care who i am :-)

thank you for dropping by, pdstix.

i do not get what you were saying to Ikonski though.

btw. i am selling my mpc.

    lol

    best,

    b

  • this the shit right here

that other dudes is not as clean and missing a few beats on the hat....or are you hiding another drummer?.......ha

  • ikonski142,

    welcome to the screen!

i take your funny remark as a compliment, if you don't mind me doing so, thank you!

btw: if i were to fake the hats, protools would have been my tool of choice for the pretense :-)

check the transcription on my myspace, what you hear is indeed playable.

only bummer here is that the linn-claps on 2 + 4 really tie the room together, so to speak. but alas, not enough limbs at disposition in our species...

  • yeah i was just fuckin with you, its all good

  • Thank you for showing this groove correctly!

I can't stand the fact that Bazybeat missleads so many people by showing it incorrectly. Thanks again!

  • you're a very funky cat yourself!

thank you for taking the time to drop some props on here, it is well appreciated!

    big up to stockholm,

    b

  • Bazy Beats is just trying to help you prick

  • Yes, he is. But that doesn't change the fact that he does it incorrect. I tried to tell him that, but he wouldn't listen. What you don't see is that I also am trying to help, and for that you call me a "prick".

  • well, sorry

  • hey u 2.

just found your little argument here.

first thought: "oh no, now people are fighting on my page, too".

but actually, i like the outcome a lot.

one reaching out. another stepping over the line a bit.

one not going to war directly, but making an effort to explain.

and the other getting back on a more peaceful tone.

i decided to keep this on here.

it has nothing to do with the topic directly. but everything with interaction between people. which music is essentially about.

    thank you both!

  • no, your a prick, if you were not a prick you would have just shut the fuck up and not said anything.... prick

  • well I'm sorry that I may have hurt someones feelings, but why should I NOT say anything? why should I NOT give steelyben credits for making good tutorial for the 777-9311 groove? and why should I NOT mention that Bazybeats does it wrong?

why can't anyone admit and agree with that? steelyben, I can see that you don't want to have any fights, which I respect, but you know the groove and must have noticed this!

don't want to be a prick, which I'm not, just want things to be correct, dammit.

  • samuellindberg,

i appreciate your reaching out and turning the other cheek as well. i have nothing but respect for you, sir.

but right or wrong do not really matter to me, as i think they are in the eye of the beholder more than up to me.

discussion is always welcome though, for the sake of sharing and improving.

    be well y'all,

    b

  • funkbird,

i can't be but amazed that one would really get that personal about a topic of that minor importance.

i for one am here to learn and share. and to learn i can by watching greatness or mistakes, which to differenciate is free to everyone. the bashing part i find brings netiher to the page here.

  • TOO many bass drum notes

  • hi masterhead,

that is an interesting statement, please elaborate!

    best,

    b

  • Great!! I have not heard this song by The Time before until today after viewing Bazybeats' 777-9311 tutorial video. The sound you have from your drum kit is great. It sounds quite similar to the recorded song. If you fuse Bazybeats' sound with your hihat, it would almost be the same sound as the record. Thanks.

  • Hi taramic,

    thanx for stopping by!

I actually find that I put too much reverb on my recording, which was eventually done with three mics (and none for the voice - won't happen again..).

My kick is resonating a bit too long here, although I agree it has a nice depth to it, especially since it's only a 20 by 4 inch shell.

I do like the snare here, and the 12" hats are my thing anyways :-)

I am pretty ok with the cadence itself, which, along with my sticking, resembles the actual linn groove.

    EZ,

    B

  • Come on people give this man some love, this was one of the hardest beats ever,I got this beat down with the help of this video, thxs again Steelyben

  • ...the lord is humbling his fellow drummer - thanx again for your kindness!

  • Very cool...!

  • ...you too!

didnt we just connect on myspace?

    sounds great yourself, man!

    thanx for chiming in!

    b

  • Yeah, we did connect on MYSPACE. After I saw you get down on this clip, I knew that I wanted to stay in touch wit cha bad ass (LOL)! Yeah man, I am more than hip to this tune and for the life of me, I STILL CAN'T PLAY IT (LMAO)!!! You really did an excellent job my new friend!

  • ...had to play it again live last saturday. always a kick in the head, man, trying to be a linn for 3 minutes or so :-)

thanks again for the props, see you on myshpice,

    b

  • I got it down, just working on the speed I'm around 95 bpms, thanks so much for posting this one I've been playing it worng for years ,thxs

  • happy you dig it, lordrhythm!

i think it actually sounds sweeter around 106bpm, from a groove standpoint. similar to the advanced funk studies solos, which i dig more if played a bit slower.

but of course, we have no choice but get it up there :-)

    enjoy,

    b

  • That sounds dead on to me very good whats the sticking on the rolls..

  • hey lordrhythm, thanx for chiming in!

the roll starts on 4and in the first bar, going LLRRL in 32nd notes, landing on 1 in the second bar, while the hihat is opening gradually. hihat is closed along with kick on 1e.

see also the transcription on my myspace. hope that helps,

    enjoy,

    B
