  • eff that bird! Making me jump at work

  • 3:41 FIRE - fuck

  • Wow Michael Fassbender has a slight resemblance to young Ian McKellan. Still I'd prefer to see young Ian play young Magneto. But then again, X-Men is a waste of this man's talent.

  • Hahah he's freaking gay!

  • @MrGrevy And your point is?

  • @NoKoffiekoekenForYou Just that he's gay.

  • A brilliant actor.

  • He sounds like G-man.

  • this always scares the shit out of me:P dont know why!

  • 1:00 ... amazing sudden grab of dagger. xD

  • fuck hes amazing

  • Doing extra credit for AP which requires me to recite this speech...in costume.

Can't say much though. I was the one that asked to do it. XD

Anyway, now I've got a better idea of what emotions to express.

  • @o0SomeRandomGirl0o I have to do a similar thing in my standard English class (except not in costume). My teacher said I could get extra credit if I recite something from a thing we studied and I love this monologue so I'm hoping she lets me do this even though I'm a girl :P

  • @XxVampireGirl4everxX Yeah good luck with that

  • omfg i keep forgetting the 4 and 5th line it is very painful i have to do this mono for english:S

  • he missed a line after "Whiles I Threat he Lives, Words to the heat of deeds too cold breath gives" (then the bell rings)

  • @MrShankapotamus cuts are made for television unfortunately

  • THE. BEST. HORROR. STORY. EVER.

  • Bless this tube.

    Jumpstart for NUVA.

  • my english teacher said that at some point this soliloquy splits into 2 halves, but i forgot where he said it was. could anyone please help me?

  • I would say the big change is on "There is no such thing, It is the bloody business which informs thus to mine eyes." (I didn't write it in pentameter, forgive me.)

Before that there still seems to be equivocation, but after that he is resolved to the horror of the deed.

  • Oh my god, so does mine! Yeah, the lines I have to memorize do not include lines 50, 51, 56.5 - 69.

  • Oh my God I Love It...

"My hands are of your color; but i Shame To Wear a Heart So White."

  • Wow. We watched this scene in my Honors English class on Thursday... I wasn't the only one with chills, I can assure you.

  • Wow...he does a chilling macbeth....

  • Saw Nunn's original production live in Newcastle in 76/77... absolutely compelling. If you think McKellen's chilling here you should see it in the flesh!

  • mega jealous! How old were you?

I do draw draw comfort though from the fact that in another thirty years when the he will be sadly unlikely to still be with us and certainly not acting, i will be will be able to say to young sheakespeare fans that i saw the great man's King Lear in 2007!

  • What I like about this production is the simplicity of the stage. It is absolutely beautiful! And the color scheme is also fantastic.

  • AH! he gives me the creeps. Wonderful for this soliloquy.

  • Is that Judy Dench??

  • It is indeed. Watch her: "Out damned spot." scene. Absolutely chilling.

  • "Wake Duncan" = chills.

Unbelievable acting from both of them.

  • Being but a mere butler, you will not know the great theatre tradition ... that one does never speak the name ... of the scottish play.

  • "What, Macbeth?"

"Aah! Hot potato, orchestra stalls, Puck will make amends!"

"You mean you have to do that every time I say Macbeth?"

"AAAHHH Hot potato, orchestra stalls, Puck will make amends!!!"

  • lol

    nice

  • 1:20 Jizzed in his pants

  • I think the reason why they excluded the line "Words to the heat..." is because the line is deep and the viewer might not understand it..It's kinda disapointing though because it will make the whole monologue more powerful..

  • Ian Mckellan = AMAZINGGGG! :D

  • Doesn't he go shirtless at some point in the play? After he kills Duncan?

  • In this version, yes. The second witches scene, I believe.

  • is this polanski?

  • Trevor Nunn

  • His voice is comforting merely to listen to.

  • lol

  • This particular televised production was probably the best of all productions of "the scottish play".

  • Well, with two actors who became knights of england, one of whom is the amazing Ian McKellen, I'd have to agree!!

  • Wow.... his voice hasn't changed, no matter how old he's gotten, and neither has his unconquerable regal-ness :D

  • @Billie4Mozzarella his voice definitely sounds different if you watch richard III

  • I bow in the presence of McKellen. Saw him at London Pride! ^_^

  • I first saw this in late 2003 in an AP lit class.

My only complaint is now I compare every other production of "The Scottish Play" to this one and am always disappointed.

  • ahh! how cum he gets to reach 3 mins with the dagger speech?? arrgh..can just barely 2 mins even..hmmm.gotta watch again how he does it.LOL..my monologue's coming up real fast.cram.NOW

  • oh noes! Macbeth pulled an Arthas! :O

  • Such a sinister scene...

  • Um, is this the filming of a stage production? Because there is a curious lack of background. It doesn't seem like a film.

  • it's a minimalist theatrical production.

  • Judi Dench and Ian Mckellen are the greatest actors alive!

  • Magnificent . . .

  • Do you have the Porter's scene? That would be great!

  • i find McKellen just amazing.....

love this scene and the way he does it.

  • Dench is the most amazing actress I've ever seen!

  • no, he's probably just taking creative liberties, that's probably the most awkward line to read in the entire soliloquy, the way its done is good

  • he forgot a line! haha. "whiles i threat he lives, WORDS TO THE HEAT OF DEEDS TOO COLD BREATH GIVES" I have to memorize this for class, makes me feel good spotting an error.

  • LOL...me too! I have an audition this monday for our school play macbeth. LOL. i was given a script and i have the same line at the end ^^

  • I wondered where that went ^^

  • do you really think, that when fliming this, he would forget a line, and nobody would ever notice. Not the director, or the other actors, anyone, not for 38 years; but you watch the youtube video, and oh, you spot the error. nothing gets passed you eh, sharp as tack this one.

  • I'm assuming you were replying to someone who was referring to the omission of line 61 of Act 2, Scene 1. "Words to the heat of deeds too cold breath gives." I agree that McKellen probably didn't forget it. It was probably deliberate. Alternatively, it may have been because the bell's toll was early. The bell should toll after the ommited line. Perhaps he(being the incredible actor that he is) quickly decided to skip the line so that the rhythm wasn't ruined. If so, it simply says more for him!

  • @HotScot1888 stfu

  • @HotScot1888

    HAHAHAHHA

  • Good to have an expert on board........

  • Am I not entitled to my opinion?

  • Yes, but your opinion phails.

  • No...you're just hard of hearing, show some respect u arsehole

  • The words of a true fanboy. I never called any of his supporters names; why do you feel the need to stoop down to that level?

  • yeah,

I completely disagree with TulseLuper. But he or she is perfectly entitled to an opinion even if not very modestly expressed. No need to hate on someone for not liking mcellons acting.

I would say however that his stage performances do not really translate well onto the screen. Even when filmed especially as this is. It does seem a touch ott in places. A few feet back though, seen live. It is mesmerizing.

  • That's fair enough. Have you ever seen Richard Burton's Hamlet? On film it comes across as mannered but by all accounts it was electrifying when seen live. I don't know, I was younger then and probably looking for a fight. I wouldn't have bothered insulting Ian McKellan's acting today even though I'm still not a big fan.

  • Fab!

  • Best acting ever!! 2 thumbs up!!!!

  • A rivetting performance, McKellen in fine form!

  • Ian Mckellen is arguementably the greatest actor who ever lived. I certainly think so - I find him very inspiring!
