@darthchaosofrspw2009 No doubt Microsoft will try to intimidate commercial users of Linux but people aren't buying that so much any more. Is Microsoft going to tell Google they owe them some royalties for not using Windows? Google will tell Microsoft to go pound sand.
@darthchaosofrspw2009 The beginning of the end for Xandros was when the Xandros executives cashed out in their deal with the devil, (Microsoft). Microsoft killed off a Linux distro (plenty to take its place), but mostly, they were buying FUD. Microsoft paid Xandros to buy indemnification from Microsoft, which implied that Linux was in violation of some of Microsoft's intellectual property, which is ludicrous given how much Microsoft has stolen from open source (and implemented badly.
I didn't know that these things happened with Xandros Linux, what a pity. Well Xandros was famous for an easy desktop use, but this part of users can now be covered by Ubuntu or openSUSE.
Over at Linux Internationals,we are picking up ever more
Xandros folk..I strongly suspect also they will be next under Microsoft's knife...Seems their forum has turned into a spammers paradise and the mods don't care...Not a good omen.
I'm currently using Cosmosis,a very obscure distro a friend in KY put together.
As a long time Lindows, Linspire and now Kubuntu suer, Yes, there were quite a lot of us upset when Xandros caved to M$ as we are quite certain that at some time in the future, it will be used in a court of law as an admission of guilt by the entire Linux community. Whenever you make a bargain with the devil you have to remember that you are the junior partner. Thanks for the videos.
I'm still using PCLinuxOS. So's my wife and my sister. One desktop at a time, Linux is winning. Just as Linux is eating Microsoft's lunch, Mac is drinking Microsoft's milk shake. Windows Vista?!? Are people still uninstalling it on new machines to replace it with XP? They should be replacing it with Linux. Bloated Microsoft is its own worst enemy.
@Liberty4Ever Windows 7 superbar is actually an idea copied from KDE, and window stabilization in Windows 7 was also taken from KDE as an idea. I saw this function at KDE for the forst time. Look also at the clock / date at the right of Win 7 superbar. It's KDE based.
i am using dual boot, but after your inspiring vid i will completely switch to ubuntu. " You can cut all the flowers but you cannot keep spring from coming. Pablo Neruda
I have a different perspective, as I have been using M$ and am loooking for an alternative, but one which meshes with what I already have, i.e., I'm looking for a gradual migration from M$ to Linux, with some back-and-forth in a dual boot environment. In this respect, Xandros has some very useful features, notwithstanding the apostasy of their agreement with M$.
As a Linux snob, the idea of straddling the line between Windows & Linux is sort of like being half evil. :^) I can understand user's necessity after decades of using Windows, although I don't miss it at all and I'm glad to have flushed the entire MS mess. It's unsustainable. Look at Vista. What crap.
PCLinuxOS allows good interoperability with MS, including SAMBA support for MS networking. I know Xandros was working on some Windows collaboration, but it was stuff I didn't want to perpetuate.
...and no crappy Microsoft products were used watching it (except for my usb-mouse which I suspect was not of microsoft origin, and only has the microsoft logo because one of those damn lawsuits)
I think you are not the only one in the Xandros Community who thinks like that. I heard a lot of Developers are now working on Klikit-Linux and a lot of users change to PCLinuxOS or Ubuntu.
Do you think that a next Major Version (5?) of Xandros will come out ... i don't think so
The last couple releases weren't major, except in price. My opinion when I left Xandros last summer was that there may not be any more major releases. Usually the deal with the devil is near the end, and I cynically wonder if it isn't just executives cashing out. I haven't been watching Xandros since then, so I don't have an informed opinion now.
A version of Xandros is in the little Eee, and I hear it's nice. Developing for fixed hardware is a lot easier.
Do a search on YouTube for a series of things Dennis King wrote about Andy Typaldos and his wife Renee back when they belonged to the U.S. Labor Party (associated with Lyndon LaRouche). Turns out Renee Typaldos was arrested for participating in some cult kidnapping. The actual links are dead so you'll have to use those links with the Internet Archive Wayback Machine.
It is a very scary prospect for us Linux users. I believe in the existence of multiple systems, including that of MS, but I do not respect the point of view that Linux is ripping off there patents, the case, then GM should sue Toyota for ripping off the concept of the automobile from them. Or, perhaps, the various aircraft companies, like Boeing and Aerobus, should continue to pay royalties to the Wright brothers for the invention of the a/c.This is the illogic of MS position.
I believe that those who have done deals with Microsoft are in the minority. Others have been approached by Microsoft, like Red Hat and Canonical, both rejected Microsoft's offer telling Microsoft that if they believe they have a case, "we'll see you in court". Of course nothing has happened. Although I see SCO is being resurrected with money from the middle east to play proxy FUD monster again... Guess who's behind that...
Well, I bought Xandros Desktop OS Version 3 a bit back and payed $90 for it on line and have not been at all satisfied with it. Disappointed is an understatement. I have a copy of Ubuntu and like it as well as the SUSE.
Hey man, i cant complain about the reason that "forced" you to do as you did but i have to complain about you not picking up the "leftovers" in your video... i hope you did.
Now how about the SuSe linux distribution? As far as i am concerned you have to keep an open mind, for these agreements... there is a chance that there will be a positive effect...it is a risk though.
The very first sign after the shooting indicated that I picked up all of the paper and plastic bits. The video was shot on my private property. It took a little over an hour!
I don't see any "positive effects" of Microsoft buying out Linux companies and turning them against Linux. It's just the next step in their weasel FUD campaign. They'll eventually lose, but they have to mess up as much as they can while trying to keep their head above water.
About Xandros if the distro is now owned by M$ you are right but for SuSE i think that the agreement they have may have positive effects, i consider their move a very strategic move since Linux and Unix loses share on the server market, it is good for publicity and if used wisely it can promote Linux further in the desktop market too, but as i mentioned earlier it is a risk...in my opinion worth taking since SuSE is one of the major distributions in both desktop and server market.
The Xandros agreement is a lot like the original SuSE agreement, and the subsequent Linspire agreement. I think all of the agreements give Microsoft too much control of the Linux companies and ultimately turn them against the Linux community and will probably result in legal battles between Linux companies, or Microsoft Approved Linux (TM), or both.
I don't think any of these agreements are in the long term best interests of the Linux companies involved, and I know they're not good for Linux in general, otherwise MS wouldn't have made the agreements. Look at how many companies have benefited from a Microsoft alliance in the past. Essentially none.
Don't forget that MS has publicly referred to Linux as "a cancer". They are not the friend of Linux. This is another "embrace and extend" move, and is the next phase of the MS FUD campaign against Linux. Check out ditrowatch. SuSE has been rightfully losing ground after their MS agreement.
Well yes that is true SuSE is losing ground but that is because of the negative publicity it got among Linux users(and that is just a little storm it will end eventually), that said i have to insist that novel & SuSE knows the risks, i just hope they have a good plan to take advantage of it.
Linux needs a good publicity plan, this will end the uncertainty the fear and the doubt, users will meet the true personality and power of Linux, in the agreement that novel & SuSE made with M$ i see that opportunity and prospect.
I'm shocked that you think Novel's deal with Microsoft will DECREASE the Linux FUD and could be good for Novel or Linux. There is a 25 year history of companies that entered into agreements with Microsoft and were destroyed by it, despite all the "we want to work with you to strengthen both companies" claims.
There was a huge mass exodus at Xandros after they signed the MS agreement, and Xandros users are less anti-MS zealots than most Linux users. Those users aren't coming back, and they're talking to others. Maybe Xandros is now focused on servers and not desktops, but so far, the MS agreement looks bad. I suspect it was a slow death versus quick death sort of non-choice. If so, quick death would be better than a pact with the devil. :)
Maybe you are right, but i have to insist that i have faith in the intelligence and power that novel holds, i believe that the results of the agreement will be positive for end-users besides their agreement covers only the customers from an attack by M$.
Liberty4Ever, I've commented against your ideas of firearm recoil and i'm convinced i'm Right. At this point, I haven't received a reply to my last post. All this aside, I have no idea what point you were making with the operating system accusations but I want to say that you are the only other one other than my Dad, I've seen to advertise knowledge of Mike Oldfields, Tubular Bells! Why would anyone want to install PC cabbage OS instead of the real thing Mandriva 2007.1? PClos is like choosing a rusty Toyota Celica instead of a Corvette.
There is nothing "rusty" about PCLinuxOS 2007. It's easy to install, fast, and it has a huge repository with the latest applications. One advantage over Mandriva is that Mandriva could be the next commercial Linux to sell out to Microsoft, and I just don't see that happening with the user-oriented PCLinuxOS.
It makes me wonder if the founders and presidents of these commercial Linux vendors are actually secretly employed by Microsoft. It's like Alex Jones said: "In a dictatorship, there is no choice." Microsoft, Apple, and the commercial Linux vendors and their presidents (Michael Robertson, Kevin Carmony, and Andy Typaldos) are all a bunch of Z****** scumbags.
M$ probably owns all they need to get what they want while ensuring the commercial Linux companies don't succeed. M$ monopoly money for the executives and their commercial distros die and take the companies with them. I think M$ has probably bought all they'll be able to buy and the lines are now drawn. I'm sure they have a lot more M$ Dirty Tricks (TM) planned, but hopefully we can now tell who's friend and who's foe.
I edited the video with Kino. It was not only my first experience with Kino, it was also the first time I edited any video on a PC. It's fairly easy and intuitive. Next time, I'll make a bit more effort, synchronizing the music, etc. I mixed the soundtrack with Audacity, which I had used previously when ripping books-on-CD. Open source software is great!
If it wasn't for the 65 minutes I spent picking up all the little pieces of paper and CD plastic, I'd shoot some Windows OEM disks that I'm forced to buy with every decent notebook PC (aka The Microsoft Tax). I'm forced to give Microsoft $45 for an OS I don't want, won't use, and can't sell. That's evil.
Unfortunately, the college that I'll be enrolling to (Penn State) has an exclusive deal with Microsoft, so I'm forced to use the whole office series. Otherwise, I would have nuked it off my notebook as well. There was an article somewhere that if you rejected the M$ EULA, you can get that $45 dollars back.

I've read of a lot of people trying and only one guy, in Australia, getting any money back, and that money wasn't from Microsoft. We aren't talking about how it SHOULD work. We're talking about how it doesn't work in the real world. They didn't even honor their own EULA, and I think they've changed it so a refund isn't even mentioned.
I love my Mac mini... I hate Microsoft and now I guess I have been betrayed by Xandros who saw the dollars... of was it black mail? If only we knew but the silence is hurting my ears.

Microcrap (Also called Macrosoft Macrocrap and Macrohog (by me)) copied all that of Mac.
