@BackstrokeOfTheWest Me too. If I were into acrylics, this drive would be perfect for that. Makes me wonder, though, if the HDD gods will ever make an acrylic HDD case? I think that would be pretty awesome, even if you don't have an acrylic case. Thanks for the comment!
@vacationeruk If you have information that you absolutely cannot live without, then you'll need to look into data recovery options. If you can do without the information, then look into your warranty and see if it can be fixed.
I've got that HDD on the shelf :) I'm not trusting to warranty repair because they can say that imposible to recover data and they'll give u just another HDD. one day I'll send that HDD to proper recovery service but at the moment it's a bit expensive to me...
@pakkiaman2 Oh wow, I'm sorry I didn't log in sooner to help you through this difficult time. I feel for you :(
Surely you still have some time left in your warranty, though, right? Have you tried looking up that information at Western Digital's website? If it's still under warranty (and you haven't violated the terms of it), then you can at least have the drive repaired or replaced.
Let me know how it all turns out, and thanks for stopping by and commenting!
hmm please answer this because i have a fear of that happening but the click i hear is ver quiet and i have to put my ear on the pc to hear it. and i usually hear it when i just leave my computer idle or i dont look through at my files. when i do i hear that normal sound it makes. is it the click of death? i have backed my files just in case. ty
It would be louder if it was bad, im pretty sure you'll be fine. If you're still worried, check out your hard drive with HDD Health or some other diagnostic application.
It means that the drive is dying. You need to transfer the data to a new hard drive ASAP because the next time you boot may be it for the drive and then you're looking at several hundred to several thousands to get it back.
Transfer the data and then look into your warranty status. If it's under warranty, WD should have an RMA form on their site and you can go that route and send the drive in for repairs.
Sounds like my Zen Micro photo after I dropped the stupid thing... again. Went through two already. Been trying to decide on what new failure to get next cause my old mp3 diskman has held up through worse and still looks new.
The drive was only about 6 months old at the time this video was shot, and between the poor lighting, the drive being all black, and the DV cam's spotlight, makes for a sub-par capture.
Strangely enough, though: This is my most popular YT video. Go figure :) .
I have two WD drives that both began making noises at some point - still used for non crit. data. One makes a noise like on old compressor (refrigerator) kicking on and the other an ultrasonic pitch you might hear from an old TV with occasional soft rattling noise that comes almost as fast as it goes. Don't know what either of these are but for 1-2 years they still work even though they make the noises sometimes. A seagate that is older than both of the WD ones still runs smooth as silk.
Yeah, usually when your hard drive makes any sound comparable to a large (magnetic!) appliance, it's time to check into your warranty/RMA information.
Those kinds of sounds are a sign of bad things to come.
At the time, it did. But also at that time, I was inexperienced with the RMA game, and needed to just unload the drive.
I needed sure cash fast, and I wasn't very comfortable sending anything somewhere with the possibility of never seeing it again (silly fear, I know, but I was strapped for cash; I needed something concrete).
Ironically enough, I have had to RMA a few hardware devices since your comment, so now I am well-versed in the RMA game.
That's not a good thing. Even if it's only every once-in-a-while, it's a sign of bad things to come. If I were you, I would immediately backup that drive and look into what kind of warranty is left on it.
It usually means your drive just died. I had an old 545 MEGAbyte Seagate drive do that to me several years ago after 6 years of faithful service.
If you can get the drive to somehow re-initialize (maybe put it in a USB enclosure on another computer), then I would copy any important files off of it FAST.
You also may want to check the warranty status of your drive, because most-likely it's a goner.
the thing is it still works when i turn my comp on but it just asks me to select proper boot device then after i do that it works fine so does it mean its still in the red?
That seems to point a motherboard/OS problem, meaning your drive is probably fine. You may want to try re-seating the hard drive's cables and check your motherboard's BIOS settings just to make sure a setting didn't get switched on you.
If you're uncomfortable doing this, then definitely get a trusted PC technician or a friend to do this.
Let me know if you have any other problems, and other YouTube users: Feel free to add to or correct my initial diagnosis of the situation.
yh your probably right well it doesnt do the clicking thing anymore it just asks me to select boot device all da time when i boot up but thats bout it
Good thing Seagate has a 5 year warranty on their drives, so it isn't a total loss. Before parking another drive in your enclosure, you may want to do some checking up on it.
Most-likely, though, you just got a hold of a bum drive. It happens with all the manufacturers. We just need to make sure that, as consumers, we protect ourselves in the event of a hard drive crash (backing up data and making sure if your drive fails within 2-4 years, there's some sort of warranty).
I believe so. If you saw it in a German store, then there would be no reason not to believe it.
I'm a Seagate man myself, although WD has my respect: Not many drives last 5+ years in the environment my father put his through and live to tell the tale (In fact, it's still spinning away to this day, with regular backups taking place for that inevitable day).
I´m a seagate-man, too but i think there are not really bad hard drives... i only buy seagate because of the 5 year warranty and the fact that they aren´t very expensive. they also are very silent
I just cried when i saw that drive tick... I always wanted a raptor JUST so i can watch it work wihtout having to open one of my drives... problem is, i dont have the money or a sATA enclosure for it T.T
I dont have a western digital for my laptop internal. i have a seagate momentus, at 160gb and 5400 rpm it is my best drive. but what scres me is that i had another momentus, same specs, only it had a sATA interface and the one in my laptop has a pATA interface. But the sATA one had barely clocked 100 days running time b4 the click of death struck. it was in one of those cheap little portable enclosures... At least i now know the next laptop sATA drive i get will have a home!
Ouch. I've had bad luck with Western Digital drives. I've always used Seagate and only ever had one failure:- a 2.5" drive from about 12 years ago when I tried using it for the first time in many years, a week ago :)
I'm using one of these HDDs (WD1500AHFD aka WD RaptorX) since a year or so. Very fast, the VelociRaptor is the only S-ATA drive that is even faster.
It takes a lot to kill a WD drive, even my oldest WD (almost 10 years old) still works fine, SMART status is very good, while my other HDDs (Samsung Spinpoint series, some Maxtor HDDs, one Seagate HDD) already died.

You would need to call up Western Digital and ask them that question. As far as data recovery is concerned, I'm not sure if that would be possible depending on the exact nature of your problem.
Oh no... I have a lot of data inside, it's a pain if all the data lose. Anyway, I'll try and ask them, if it can't work, may be I'll just claim the warranty then. Thanks for the advice
That's a bummer. Remember, though, that if you try the data recovery route, that can quickly climb into the 4-figure range (depending on who you use, their methods/rates, etc), so it would be best to weigh the value of your files versus the cost of a data recovery session.
Please note that these suggestions are from my own personal experiences; since I'm not there and can't physically see/test your drive, I'm only going on memory.

uh... did you cool it properly? if you didnt, think about this: 10,000RPM HDD= REALLY HIGH HEAT+ no cooling= bum bun bum....
doyouhavedrift 3 years ago
Agreed. I run 2 x 300GB SATA Seagate hard drives, and I slapped 80x80x15mm HDD coolers on them from day 1.
For 7200RPM drives, they generate a great deal of heat, but nothing compared to what a 10K RPM Raptor can.
After 20 seconds of video, the WD drive was already very warm to the touch, so I can only imagine how hot it gets after an hour or so.
You don't need 3-figure cooling, just a simple fan to move the heat away from your drive(s), and good case cooling to draw the heat out.
