For some reason this ticked me off. I love durian and the smell. I get the tour guide because I'll be pissed too if someone just came and said to everyone watching the show that durian sucked.
I think the guide thought he was being disrespectful, but he really wasn't. He said it smells bad only to foreigners. Well obviously not, because otherwise hotels and train stations wouldn't ban it. I enjoy foods that I know others don't like, and people eat things I can't imagine putting in my mouth. It's all about personal taste. The people in some cultures think Westerners are crazy for drinking cow milk, and I'm not offended that they think so. I think the guide was kind of rude about it.
I wish i could post this on all pages of Andrews. "how does your wife put up with you you must have some bad gas" God bless your wife. But you are just so awesome

It's a sweet fruit, if too ripe can be a very mushy fruit, but if picked just right it can be a good firm fruit, it's smell is strong, but it's not too bad.

@kaneda956 Jackfruit and durian are two completely different fruit. Jackfruits are sweet and sometimes a lil tangy. I have not had durian before so I couldn't even start to explain about that fruit lol.

The full ripe durian would be way too aggressive for him. He should try the half-way ripe version - crispy outside, soft in side - better texture and less smell. This style is common in Thailand but not in Malaysia.

Durian is the best fruit I've eaten. I love the smell. Smells really uniquely sweet and pungent. Its texture is smooth and slippery, and the fleshy skin (not the sharp covering) is a little rubbery. I can't believe I can eat something that Andrew can't even chew for five seconds, considering he's eaten a lot of bizarre stuff. I can't blame him though. Even among malays, people there either really hate durian or like it. Like others said, durian is totally different from jackfruit.

@ziderazzi People experience taste different based on certain genetic traits. Example most people can't taste propylthiouracil but "supertasters" will found it really bitter.
There is also another slightly smelly fruit that is suppose to be available in Penang, it is called Marang in the Phil. WIth soft longer spikes it is relative to jack fruit. when the fruit smells like the new rubber wheels of cars then Marang is ok to eat, sweet, hope he finds it.

Durian is banned in many places because of its stench. It smells like gasoline, its tastes sweet but the smell when you eat it makes it hard for some to eat it. it can give ppl headaches. I tried durian cake which is pretty good, and I can eat durian but just a bit, before it gets jaded. Im disappointed that he couldn't eat it, but does this mean, i can eat anything that he can?

I'm American and I like durian. We have it here in Hawaii. But the flavor seems to change from one extreme to another, from one fruit to another...so you never really know what you're going to get. Its always a surprise. Note: don't eat it before going on a date.

The thing about durian is that the taste can vary a lot from fruit to fruit. I think he had bad luck.

Yea I agree. Some can be really pungent, while some are not. But those who hate durian hates even the smell of it, even if the durian is the least pungent

Really? I'll have to look for more than. I've only had one durian and it was some of the nastiest stuff I've ever eaten. Then again, I had no idea how long it had been sitting in the store when I bought it.

@ziderazzi People experience taste different based on certain genetic traits. Example most people can't taste propylthiouracil but "supertasters" will found it really bitter.

I can agree about durian in 10000 %. Fruit has strong, unique, sometimes hard to stand smell itself, but all in all it just TASTE delicious. regards

Durian I have tried that many times and when I was little I enjoyed it soo much.
The smell was kinda funky but I think it smells better later when you get used to it

There is also another slightly smelly fruit that is suppose to be available in Penang, it is called Marang in the Phil. WIth soft longer spikes it is relative to jack fruit. when the fruit smells like the new rubber wheels of cars then Marang is ok to eat, sweet, hope he finds it.

Durian is banned in many places because of its stench. It smells like gasoline, its tastes sweet but the smell when you eat it makes it hard for some to eat it. it can give ppl headaches. I tried durian cake which is pretty good, and I can eat durian but just a bit, before it gets jaded. Im disappointed that he couldn't eat it, but does this mean, i can eat anything that he can?

I'm American and I like durian. We have it here in Hawaii. But the flavor seems to change from one extreme to another, from one fruit to another...so you never really know what you're going to get. Its always a surprise. Note: don't eat it before going on a date.
