The one who leaves Islaam will be asked to repent by the Sharee’ah judge in an Islaamic country; if he does not repent and come back to the true religion, he will be killed as a kaafir and apostate, because of the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): "Whoever changes his religion, kill him." (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 3017).
The penalty is for Treason not faith conversion. US, India, China, Cuba & Vietnam have no state Faith, so changing a faith is not treason. However, if a convert starts propagating a Faith contrary to the Faith of the state, would fall in the category of Treason. If Ahmadi declare themselves as Ahmadi and not Muslim, their Prophet shall have the same status as any other Prophet & Blasphemy statue shall apply to whoever blasphemes Mr Ahmad.

Praise be to Allaah. The punishment for apostasy (riddah) is well-known in Islaamic Sharee’ah. The one who leaves Islaam will be asked to repent by the Sharee’ah judge in an Islaamic country; if he does not repent and come back to the true religion, he will be killed as a kaafir and apostate, because of the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): "Whoever changes his religion, kill him." The penalty is for Treason not faith conversion. US, India, China, Cuba & Vietnam have no state Faith, so changing a faith is not treason. However, if a convert starts propagating a Faith contrary to the Faith of the state, would fall in the category of Treason. @einestian wahabism is a refined version of mainstream belief. however shiaism is deviation from the mainstream...its my observation...however it doesnt mean that anyone who is shia is not a muslim or anyone who is wahabi is somewhat more muslim or the only muslim... who is right or who is wrong may Allah be best judge for that, what we should do as shia, sunni or wahabi or whatever else one may like to call himself is watch out the interests of Muslim community....

@rebelfromlahore Religion is not a popularity contest, if you want to take numbers as criteria of legitimacy, then Islam was without value in the early days of the message when the Prophet Mohammad PBUH had only a small band of followers. From a Western secular perceptive, there is a reasoned argument to be made that Wahhabism is not actually Islam but a parallel region to Islam, which shares certain outward similarities to Islam.

Good point, death penalty to revert from Islam does seem very extreme and non-Islamic. Islam is a religion of progression and open minded philosophies, something as trivial as this has to be some backward induction of thought by mullas like zakir naik into the real outlook of Islam regarding this issue.
