this piece was the first real classical piece I heard at secondary school thank you to my music teach a.c. for developing my love of all types of music
what a beautiful melody, i am from beijing, i addicted to this classic music way long before, after i went to Praha this summer, walked along vltava river, it seems to me i could feel the soul of this city as well as this river through the music....
This song is just...wonderful,amazing,beautiful,there are no words to describe.I'm not czech, but if I were,I'd be proud of being one.The czech know how to preserve their history and culture.Czech cities are amongst the best looking cities in Europe.I didn't know they were so good musicians as well, amazing!
For the very first time in more than 100 years, Czech Philharmonic has brought in more women musicians to join the orchestra. I am so happy and proud!!
Sorry xingsheng1. but i think you will be disappointed. Vltava is more like sewer these days. Its polluted alot. Wonderfull peace of music nonetheless.
This is a musical depiction of the river's course through Bohemia.
One day I will visit Prague and stand by Vltava, and admire the river which, since my teenage years, was presented to me in this glorious piece of music!
Jehovah created the non-Jew in human form so that the Jew would not have to be served by beasts. The non-Jew is consequently an animal in human form, and condemned to serve the Jew day and night.
As an Israeli Jew I am ashamed to read what you've wrote. God has cre4ated us all the same in Form - we are all animal and you are the worst beast = Shame on you...
shame on you. God created all humans in his own image. So by saying this you are undermining God's work. And what kind of rabbi are you? Don't answer. No need for that.
what a big mouth, ask your mother to shit in it you nazi dick head. the day i catch you, you ll beg your mother to take you back in her ugly asshole you son of a whore.
shame this piece is much shorter than original but still beatifull. Of course Smetana was Bohemian (Czech) but in his time that was under the command of Habsburg´s monarchy, which means czech language almost disepeared. Thanks god it did not. So I dont really understand why people here talk about WWII. It has nothing to do with nazy times but with the "dark age" of Bohemian 1622 - 1918. Anyway noone can change the fact this truly is master piece of classical music. Greetings from Prague!
@vochcatko National Historics are tolking about "dark age" of Bohemian 1622 - 1918 but really it was the longest and most prosperous age in Bohemia of all times ...
this duth portray a small irrodecent cool spring meeting with a warm and energetic spring witch then become one large and ever flowing river in a beautiful array of texture and colour. this river is the moldau.
Yeah, well all are Europeans! It's the best way how the break nationalism. We all can be proud of Prague, Berlin, Vienna, London, Paris, Roma, Madrid...what a great idea! United States of Europe, as Churchill thought!
This describes the flow and excitement of a river so much. When I was in a small cafe in Germany, overlooking the Rhine River, I could only think of this as the beautiful description of a powerful river. Thanks for putting it on the website.
You are worse than the nazy! looks like you did not learn anything of WW2. That is part of the past! live now and think of the future! The most importan is that this song is great!! Idiots!
Praha is wonderful, one of the 5 most beautiful cities in the world. This music is heart of this great city. Jozefov and Jewish quarter left me without words.
Well in this performance I didn't see a single orchestral player looking at him once. It being a nationalist piece for this orchestra, they all know how it goes anyway - they could probably play this piece just as well without any conductor!
Asahkenazy in my opinion is NOT first class pianist as some people say, but he is an excellent conductor.(I have been to his concert more than 5 times as a pianist. He was not at all in any means as the world class performer.) His ability as a conductor is easily underestimated as he once did not get a position for Royal Philharmonic.(Maybe because he is a fool not to understand greatness of Bruckner.....well....I am kiddin....)
we are playing this song for our spring concert in school. many people in our orchestra dont like song. i wonder why. i think its a beautiful piece. wish i can play like that someday! :D
The composition describes the course of the Vltava, starting from the two small springs, the Cold and Warm Vltava, to the unification of both streams into a single current, the course of the Vltava through woods and meadows, through landscapes where a farmer's wedding is celebrated, the round dance of the mermaids in the night's moonshine: on the nearby rocks loom proud castles, palaces and ruins aloft. The Vltava swirls into the St. John's Rapids; then it widens and flows toward Prague... WIKI
Hahaha, Smetana was a German guy and he learned czech when he was adult and, in addition, at that time there were no czech schools?? Somebody should think a bit! Btw, I heard that Wagner was from Italy and Beckenbauer from Croatia!! The same logic!
You´re a son of a bitch. What do U think? In the ages of Smetana everything was german...In Czech was also spoken in german language, but Smetana WAS czech!!!His name is czech, do yyou think, that a german couldt name Smetana??Think first

It´s music at first, politics and nacional ego boosting hopefuly at least...well VLTAVA is czech river and that´s what is this masterpiece all and only about....ergo linguistic student speaking...plus how do you explain "german" phonem with grafem which is purely slavonic by the way...greatings from Pilsen

Austria was Slavonic country. Slovenian national minority exists even now after millennium of assimilation. So Graz is Gradsko (from Slavonic grad - city like Lenin-grad, Belgrad...). Klagenfurt is Celovec, Fillah is Beljak and so on.
I just watched a video of the israeli national anthem here on youtube because of some comments here complaining about Israel stealing Smetanas beatiful song and changing it to their anthem, but now that I've watched it I can't see any parallels between both pieces. Bohemia had never been a "part of austria". Was Hungary a part of Austria ? No. As well As the czech country. These were countries with some level of "independence" united under the person of "Kaiser".
Smetana was no German. He spoke czech and german (all people did in here in those times) but he was czech. Im sorry for bad english
Show me German citizen who can pronounce "Bedřich" correctly - noone unles he(she)knows Czech language, this was reason for many Czechs at that time(under german rule) to choose german equivalent for their names, even my grand-grandmother had 2 versions of her name..
btw: "Má vlast" with "Vyšahrad" "Tábor" and "Blaník" is truly of german origin...
at first i'd like to say that i'm austrian and don't understand any czech word. so, thanks to those who answered in english. furthermore i have to say that i read in the meantime that he could speak czech, because he has learned how to as an adult.i read this in the german wikipedia in the article about smetana. but, as you see, in that time it wasn't normal to speak that language for a czech.
but,to make that thing clear,i didn't want to take away your national composer:))greets from vienna
I'm czech and i think that it is possible... i know - of course - also the others czech people from the past and they were really great for Bohemia... but they couldn't speak czech. A little bit stuped :-) ... and i'm sorry for my english :-)
Bedřich Smetana was Czech...like it or not, but there is nothing you can do about it:-P What's more He actively fight for Czech nation against Austria. He was a member of antiaustria group of Czechs called "Svornost" he even made an anthem for them...so saying he was german or something sounds a bit stupid don't You think?...

Es ist so sentimental und errinnert mich immer an menschen und deren werte die wir verloren haben. Darum wünsche Ých mir das es die mission hat den menschen liebe und frieden zu schenken.
This is the most beautiful piece I have ever heard. Smetana is one of my favourite composers, The Moldau being the best movement in my opinion! I love the continual movement reflecting the river. Good use of Dynamics in this version compared to others too. Love this piece!

btw: "Má vlast" with "Vyšahrad" "Tábor" and "Blaník" is truly of german origin...

at first i'd like to say that i'm austrian and don't understand any czech word. so, thanks to those who answered in english. furthermore i have to say that i read in the meantime that he could speak czech, because he has learned how to as an adult.i read this in the german wikipedia in the article about smetana. but, as you see, in that time it wasn't normal to speak that language for a czech.
but,to make that thing clear,i didn't want to take away your national composer:))greets from vienna
