The Chinese govt. is swamping Tibet with Han Chinese, so all the benifits of modernisation go to them. The Tibetans have become 2nd class citizens in their own country. I like Penn and Teller's videos; however, I have to disagree with them on this one. Yes, things have improved in Tibet with secular education and running water. Tibet was a feudal society. But that is Tibet's business, not the Chinese. How do they know that Tibet would not have changed from within? Countries do, you know. I live in England and we use to be feudal, but we changed, without the help of the Chinese.
The aristocracy in Tibet were pretty awful, but the monks were highly respected and still are. They lived in poverty, not wealth. The Dali Lama grew up in fuedal Tibet and when he came to office, he was still a teenager, so cannot be held responsible for the society he grew up in.

I did a lot of research on the subject of Dorje Shugden. It is complicated. I don't think politicizing it further will help the situation. It seems to me that the Dalai Lama is damned one way or the other. He is in basically an impossible situation to be the leader of a country that is in exile. I don't know the answer to this problem, but I don't agree with persecution of anyone. The CCP needs to back off from religious issues. This world is so messed up it's a wonder how we all can live???

To those who said that the Qing Dynasty was not Chinese, well I hope you realize that the Qing had pretty much assimilated into the Chinese culture (heck the Manchu language is an endangered language today). Also, the Republic of China was the successor to the Qing Dynasty, so couldn't it be argued they had every right to claim Tibet. An interesitng thing I read was that when the ROC was drafting a constitution, Tibet actually sent delegates (can't remember where I read it though).

Tibetans & Mongols in general can hardly be described as having been a peaceful lot in general but the influence of Buddhism on them had been generally speaking beneficial.
The Chinese encouraged the Mongols to adopt Buddhism hoping it would pacify their troublesome neighbours. I have read an admirer of Genghis Khan & the Mongol military machine complaining bitterly how Buddhism had reduced them to being a nation of peaceful monks.

4.Tibetan farmers are heavily subsidized by Chinese government, while Han-Chinese are not.
5.If a Chinese and a Tibetan have a fight, it is more likely that the Chinese is sent to jail, and the Tibetan goes free

These crackdowns and arrests and deaths made the country much less stable. People are pushed to the boiling point now after a year of terror, and to make it even worse, Chinese ppl have been sold a lie that Tibetans are "dangerous terrorists." You can see it all over the web--hate towards Tibetans, fear that they'll "blow themselves up" even tho there's never been a Tibetan suicide bomber (tho there have been several Chinese ones this year.)

Why, then, were there riots in Tibet? They must have some sort of greivance. Looking at the actions of the Chinese, they look preety much like invaders to me. The Han Chinese may complain about this or that, but they were settled in Tibet to colonise Tibet into becoming a part of China. That is imperialism and colonisation. Believe me. I am British. The Chinese govt. is swamping Tibet with Han Chinese, so all the benifits of modernisation go to them. The Tibetans have become 2nd class citizens in their own country. Therefore, by doing this, the Chinese themselves are making a distinction between Chinese and non-Chinese. Tibet is under foreign ocupation. It is as simple as that.

I like Penn and Teller's videos; however, I have to disagree with them on this one. Yes, things have improved in Tibet with secular education and running water. Tibet was a feudal society. But that is Tibet's business, not the Chinese. How do they know that Tibet would not have changed from within? Countries do, you know. I live in England and we use to be feudal, but we changed, without the help of the Chinese.

The aristocracy in Tibet were pretty awful, but the monks were highly respected and still are. They lived in poverty, not wealth. The Dali Lama grew up in fuedal Tibet and when he came to office, he was still a teenager, so cannot be held responsible for the society he grew up in.

The analogy with Ireland is apt. Most of Ireland is now independent, apart from the North, which has a lot of English and Scottish settlers from way back. Tibet now has a lot of settlers, but from China. And they are being settled in Tibet for the same reason that Northern Ireland was settled - to swamp the local population so that the county would lose its national identity. This is why Tibetens are so angry and have rioted.

Tibetan Buddhism as well as people essentially still practicing BÖN, the old religion that was prevelant before the introduction of Buddhism. I just was confused when you said "worship" Dorje Shugden, are you suggesting people are worshiping him literally? Are they even Buddhist if so?

I did a lot of research on the subject of Dorje Shugden. It is complicated. I don't think politicizing it further will help the situation. It seems to me that the Dalai Lama is damned one way or the other. He is in basically an impossible situation to be the leader of a country that is in exile. I don't know the answer to this problem, but I don't agree with persecution of anyone. The CCP needs to back off from religious issues. This world is so messed up it's a wonder how we all can live???

I don't know about the Japanese one, but the Branch Davidians are legal and protected in the US, that does not mean they can do ANYTHING they want, especially with children, but they are legally allowed to practice their religious beliefs and are protected by the US constitution.
