  • Richard is cute

  • if you listen really close in some of their songs you can hear the mournful current under her voice. Karen was talking to all of us trying to tell us what was going on through the music. it's a shame no one heard her pain in time

  • Love this film...

    She was very gifted.

  • she had no choice, they all decided for her even though she made it clear that she didn't want to sing without her brother. there was definitely an emphasis of Karen not having control. even the part where the man said she couldn't sign for herself so she had to have her parent sign for her.

  • The brother was a user who took from Karen and ended with her downfall.

He was a a pain in the ass

  • The person who plays Karen is Cynthia Gibb..she used to appear in the 80s movies. Some of her famous movies in the 80s were: "Short Circuit 2", "Death Warrant" & "Modern Girls". Her last film appearance was in 2009 as a mother of an accused girl "Accused at 17". All her singing in this film were all lip synch, those were all of Karen's real recorded voice..

  • omg who is that actress playing the role of Karen?? she sounds exactly like Karen Carpenter!

  • I like the actor who portrayed Richard, he was/is cute and has/hadnice looking feet. :P

  • @DegrassiInstantStar Did you know Mitchell Anderson (the gentlemen who plays RC in the film) is gay? Pretty interesting tidbit

  • @1Cheytown Yes I did.

  • dads are more understanding than moms are

  • @MidlandlovesLaSombra Not mine.

  • @MidlandlovesLaSombra I agree with arfies, it's not always the case. My dad is from the very ol' school; whereas my mom was a free spirited bohemian at heart from the 60s. She would do whatever it takes for her kids to show their full potential, regardless what her husband (our dad) would say about it. In truth, if it weren't for my mother & her independent soul, I would've been shoved into some asylum or special school because my mother was the only one who believed.

  • I truly love the carpenters.. all for there sound in music.. todays music has no sense in their words.. but the carpenters are of heartfelt and true meaning in their songs.. Karen's voice was that of an angel..

  • melissa gibb is fair enough to do karen's role!

  • melissa gibb is fair enough to do karen's role

  • Karen was happiest playing the drums. She was in her element behind her drum set. After she was coerced into giving them up and becoming solely a singer things went downhill.

  • @cosmashivafull Richard's comments, especially in this film, probably didn't help. I don't think leaving the drums was the biggest point of her losing the weight. I think she always battled.

  • spooky

  • She was one of the most perfect of all singers that never had her voice dubbed! She was an amazing singer. I still remember the day when she passed away...I think the world will always miss her presence in the music world...r.i.p. Karen Carpentar...Your music will always live on in our hearts...

  • I remember being 6 and finding my parents Carpenter albums. I always asked them to play them :))

  • I just finished Randy Schmidt's 2010 book Little Girl Blue so I'm obsessed with them this month. Although I did see this flick as a kid when it first aired.

  • This actress that is portraying her... she can lipsink really well. Great acting!

  • The Carpenters were ahead of their time.

  • Karen's actual clothes were used in the movie. Pretty freaking cool.

  • Karen's mom had a similar voice, and apparently a couple of Karen's English ancestors had wonderful singing voices.

  • She sings way better than Justin Bieber or Britney Spears. Too sad that she died so young.

  • @Skarlet79: Yeah ~ we needed Britney Spears to sound a bit like Karen, but with all the right moves. LOL.

  • Cynthia Gibb was awesdome, & perfect, as Karen. I was as in love with her as I wasd with Karen herself. The film was a noble effort, & the critics needed to get a life. Wolfsky9.

  • Karen Carpenter had the kind of voice box and vocal chords which naturally produce a rich timbre. Add to that a pleasant voice texture, a perfect ear for music and the ability to manipulate musical notes with the vocal chords and voila - you have what is known as a human nightingale. A great pity the poor nightingale died. A very great pity. RIP Karen. Your music lives on.

  • Did anybody else realize that during "All of my Life" a flute just randomly accompanies them when the only people there were playing a piano, drums, and bass? Woooo, ghost flute.

  • @equilibrium0994 .. I agree exactly!

It's almost like the mother.. wanted it more for Richard.. than she did for Karen..

Karen was ''THE Carpenters''.. and she didn't get the support OR the recognization she so rightfully deserved.. from their mother.. the same way Richard did..

And I think, if Agnes would of.. maybe,..just maybe.. Karen wouldn't of felt so unloved, and not quite good enough.. in her mothers eyes..

    It's so sad..

  • i bet if richard was signed by himself, they wouldnt have objected as much -__-

  • I really am enjoying this one:) Thanks so much for posting it:D! better than the barbie dolls, imo - that's for sure!

  • @cyphrinfinity most definitely "A" key. That other key was waaay too high for her voice. My dad's favourite singer she was:). RIP Karen. RIP Dad *sob*.

  • That's Louise Fletcher, if it's true, an excellent actress, Karen Carpenter, wow, I am still in love with that voice, for ever and always!

  • Karen's and Richard's mother was very controling.

  • Haha i just watched Flowers in the Attic and just relized Karen's mother is the crappy Grandmother in flowers in the attic lol

  • I actually really enjoyed The Carpenters for a change instead of all the same sounding music that was going on during that time...something refreshing for a change....

  • Was there a Lifetime Network type deal back in the 70's?

  • I miss Karen so much. She truly was one in a million.

  • The part where she changes key and is suddenly Karen Carpenter is truely priceless! haha

  • i dislike her mother.

  • Karen is really cute! i love her bangs!

  • I asked my Mom for drum lessons (and guitar lessons) for years and she always said No, girls don't play drums and the guitar...and she stuck me in piano instead. Nothing against piano, but, my dreams were squashed with a consolation prize. She was a giant idiot.

  • haha if you dont get off that water diet youre going to drown

  • im only 22 and My Sister and I used to watch this movie all the time when we were young.. its still a favourite now. She does an amazing job playing Karen.

  • The clearest voice I have ever heard, the voice of an angel. And Richard was a true talent as well, with his genius in mixing and backgrounds.

  • OMG WAS THAT JIM CAREY ?

  • Comment removed

  • she's not like karen carpenter, she is ann frank

  • i would like to see a video of her vocal range (notes one by one ) will be fantastic and know her vocal range her high notes and low notes ...

  • i wish i had some of her strength

  • Im sorry but that haird -do is...omg what was she thinking? I loved her though dont et me wrong.

  • @HoshiChun It was the 70s, it could've been worse.

  • @HoshiChun

Well then don't bring up a hairdo from a time in which it was "All the rage"

  • @NightimeNecrosis I wasn't saying anything bad about it, I realize it was 'the rage' during that time. But they could've gotten a better wig well suited and that looked more natural. I'm sorry if my opinion about it was offensive to you.

  • jeez. 112 "thumbs-up," and one jack-a** who votes down...

  • Cynthis Gibb played Karen, & in my very humble opinion, she was wonderful, & had Karen, spot-on. I loved her, & found this biopic very well done; I know Rich hates it, but I loved it. Wolfsky9

  • Shes an inspiration. :'}

  • Although I'm not a fan of Carpenter's music I have nothing but respect for Richard's innovation in sound production. He perfected multitrack layering in using he AND Karen's voices as the backing vocals.

  • what theheck is that headgear she wears whilst wearing drums. major geek lol

  • i love karen! such a beautiful voice but such a tragic life... too bad she couldn't see herself for the beautiful and incredible person she was :(

  • I'm abit confused is that cynthia actually singing or is it karen's backing voice and cynthia miming the song?

  • yes, it's from Karen Carpenter's track, which Cynthia is lip-synching to.

  • @faithoffaith

i have read that this song is actually Cynthia Gibbs singing. i believe that to be true, because Karen sang a much lower octave. The rest of this movie is all Karen singing with Cynthia lip synching

  • @faithoffaith in E: Cynthia Gibb; in A: Karen Carpenter

  • @davidpar2: How do you manage to play a wrong note for your little sister? That was a crack.

  • @rayva1 at this point, Karen's (professional) singing career hadn't been officially explored; it was still all about Richard. the movie, for sake of its plot, asks us to assume that he, in his haste to present her singing ability, wasn't immediately certain of her ideal range. it's an "artistic" license, most likely; probably not something that actually happened. and a nice one; it's cool to hear Karen Carpenter's voice emerge this way...

  • your right, they never actually won the battle of the bands, they came 2nd place but they were so good they were noticed,, and they both got signed together.

  • i sill believe the person who plays Karen she really good

  • Thats Cynthia Gibb, shes been in loads of stuff :)

  • @Playerpretend6 cynthia gibb

  • @Playerpretend6 The actress is Cynthia Gibb. She was also once on the tv series Fame.

  • Karen Carpenter was amazing. The best female vocalist of all time.

  • Karen's mother in this is the actress who played Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. Just some useless trivia lol

  • JoyNine7, actually that isn't some useless trivia so thanks for sharing it. I think the casting dpt. were unto something when they cast Nurse Ratched as Karen's mom. They obviously wanted to give this character a "scary vibe" by association, lol!

  • yeah I knew she looked familiar!

  • @JoyNine7 Well that one figures! She's evil in everything. I think she was the Grandmother in Flower's in the Attic as well

  • @JoyNine7 yeah exactly

  • @JoyNine7 yes louise fletcher is an excellent actress

  • @JoyNine7 and she was in Flowers In The Attic as the psycho grandmother.

  • @JoyNine7 at least 19 ppl care about useless trivia

  • @JoyNine7 she plays alot of evil roles , its odd seeing her as a nice person lol.

  • I love the Carpeners! This was in a time that I was not even born and I like it! I want to buy this movie. I love Karen's voice. Love the times. Wish I could have been there. Thank you PG.

  • i will always remember her voice,

  • what a voice!!!!

  • All My Life is a vocal masterpiece, & one of the very 1st songs that made me notice Karen's voice. Wolfsky9

  • A haunting voice, always.

  • love it!!!!!!

  • Thanks for posting this, man! This movie is unavailable on DVD/video on the UK

  • Karen's voice is scary it is so perfect; just hearing her here sends shivers up my spine. Rest in peace, Karen with the angelic voice, now a real angel, no doubt making God smile with her incredible gift.

  • i love karen. how come i can't see part 1? copyright restrictions due to where i am? sad :(

  • Their little jazz trio makes me think of vince guaraldi... ugh, now I have to go watch some peanuts.

  • Where's part 1? All I saw was a stupid thing with dolls by someone else?

  • Find part 1 on EDzMyHomie,s channel

  • @Mitsy1212 I know this reply is late, but I saw the todd haynes, superstar (u know the one with the dolls) first, and i cried... it looks goofy but its actually very very good :)

  • Do they sell this DvD anywhere? I'd love to buy it!

  • I love karen's voice, thanks for posting this movie

  • hmmms they cut out the part where the paper called her 'the chubby sister' and tht's how it all started!

  • the actress jennifer carpenter (from Dexter looks incredibly like karen

  • the actress here cynthia gibb is the actress from the movie short circuit, she;s kinda small, karen is 5'5'', i hope they'll make a motion picture/ full length movie of her story, love you karen....- kenneth chua from the philippines

  • It was Short Circuit 2 Actually

  • I love the way that man is taken by her voice.

  • This is excellent footage of this movie! Hard to believe it will be 20 yrs since this movie came out & it was the highest rated for TV movie back in 89! I agree with a Carpenters Motion Picture! Actress Wendie Mallick who has been on numerous TV Sitcoms looks a lot Like Karen Especially that Christmas Show Photo of Karen in Green!!!! I can't get over how much she looks like her!

  • What I don't get is why they has a young teenager singing about love all the time..

  • thank you i love Karen!

  • he's amazing at playing the piano. I'm pretty darn jealous!

  • Thanks for posting this!! Love it!!!

  • i have been looking for this movie for a very long time. thanks for uploading this film. i really appreciate it.

  • This is great. Thanks for posting!!

  • Can't we see the love in the parents?? They wanted to keep the two together and showed caring. Who took Richard and Karen to the sudio? Who bought the drums and piano? I have to give the parents credit. My parents were not perfect. Who is??? Give me their name and number.

  • Now that enough time has passed isn't it time for a high quality feature film about the Carpenters' and Karen's story? One where they have the budget for the real Hollywood Bowl and a decent hair stylist.

  • I see what you mean about the hair. At 1:14 it looks like a mop!

  • Its been 25 years since Karen's passing.. it is time for a major motion picture. I can think of only actress to play Karen. Miss Anne Hathaway...

  • That is absolutely true. She does look so much like Karen Carpenter.

  • I'm thinking Mary louise parker as well...dead ringer!

  • Karen Allen: Even MORE of a dead ringer! :) She would have been better cast as a 'look-alike' Karen.

  • That's a fine choice but she would have to be dubbed, no one could recreate Karen's voice. I would also like to see Zooey Deschanel as Karen.

  • lol is that a hair style at that time?

  • thank you!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for posting! I love this movie about Karen's life.

  • OMG!!!!! Thank you for posting!

    THis is my favorite!!!!

  • I like this movie so far.

But that lip syncing is too obvious

  • I know! Its soo not realistic, at all :p

  • The Stillmen Water Diet.. More or less it was a diet that was made up by a Dr. Stillmen and it entailed drinking 8 glasses of water a day and avoiding all fatty foods. For someone like Karen who had a predispotion to eating disorders it was not something that should have been considered but at the same time her anorexia didn't start until 74. However Richard did say that while she was on this deit she was rigid about what she ate.

  • Well, she was heavily into dieting by 1974 and by 77-79 people started to notice that something didn't look right on her (she was getting quite thin then).

  • i really love her voice. ever since i listen to all their songs, it makes me inspired!to sing

  • I liked this movie. I remember seeing it when it came on TV not too long back. It's very dramatic and the girl who plays Karen is flawless.

  • Probably a silly question, but what was the Stillman Water Diet? How did it work? (Great movie by the way - I remember being very little when I saw this and my mum being quite emotional about it. Needless to say, I never thought about excessive dieting after watching this. The media STILL has so much to answer for. How many peoples lives have been, and still are being ruined because they don't feel they conform to the medias ideal of perfection?)

  • yea true

  • The part where she "fakes it" in the recording studio isn't very realistic.

    :-P

  • I know!

    It's bugging me

  • Karen was about 16 or so here.. Well before her anorexia reared it's ugly head.. However she did go on the Stillman Water diet to drop 25 pounds of "puppy fat" going from 145 to 120 pounds and stayed there til the beginning of 1974...

  • I love this movie!THANK YOU!

  • How old was she supposed to be here? The record signer said she was underage, and she looks 15. Is that right?

  • i think you're right

  • Louise Fletcher (the mom) looks way different here than she did as Nurse Ratched in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."

  • love this movie

    thanks!!!!
