No Guys this one was originally wrote by Rudy Van Dalm and the tune was called Terang Bulan and parts where is no singing were put together and that's how this Surf rider was born. This is no Ventures tune at all:)
@atasatriani Terang Bulan was originally written by Pierre-Jean de Béranger,a French lyricist who lived 1780–1857. It became a popular French melody, and was prominent on the island of Mahé in Seychelles. The song's popularity spread across the Indian Ocean and reached as far as the Malay Archipelago early in the 20th century.
However, the song sounds nothing like Spudnik (Surf Rider), but Rudy Van Dalm recorded a mixture of these two songs in 1963, which is after The Ventures' 1962 recording.
I wonder whether to-day's groups-guitar players will be able to run their fingers on the neck of their guitar when they"ll get as old as these guys. I'm in doubt.
Ohhh and they didn't play over eachother... that's why it sounded so great.
@laggie24 Hey, today's players can't even do that now. That's why you have bycicle horns and police whistles. Distract you from lousy playing. I'll stick with the Ventures, thank you very much. A few months ago, on the "Oldies Station" a DJ had mentioned that theold groups had some great names, compared to those of today. I called him and said that they had something else. Talent!!! Today's groups, in a word, SUCK!!=Stefan=
@chengloki I couln't agree with you morer ... I don't even wanna spend any time in naming the groups and so called singers of to-day... of course there is one or two that many be present after 20-30yrs. from now but dault there's is gonna be "music" for the ears in those days.
Tks. for taking the time to reflect to my comment....take care... from Budapest
@laggie24 Aloha from Hawai'i. Glad to hear from someone who has taste in music. Budapest? Hungary? I know that this is off topic, but guess what? I have a Vizsla. Are you familiar with the breed? Can you give me any tips?? She is one stubbern dog. Just asking. =Stefan=
@chengloki although I'm at Budapest... never-the-less Aloha to ya at one of those nature beauty Islands.Concerning the stubberness... well doggies are like us males/females... some are stubbern some ain't.....haaaa ...pls. see my post to ya... hope it finds ya in good health....take care and watch out in the Ocean :-)
The very early pics of the young Nokie and Don have them holding... you guess it Fender guitars. Dumble modified their amp's tone and other circuits. Now a Dumble OD Special brings up to $50K. What a lucky break doing customization for one of the best instrumental guitar rock/pop bands ever. The Ventures faired pretty well to in the deal too. I have my custom axes/amps and Fender amps, Supro RT500+amps and an EP-2 or EP-3 that gets me a clean Ventures sound. (No distortion to hide mistakes in)
This song sounds way better on a tele than it does on a Mosrite, besides Nokie wrote the song and he can play it anyway he dam well pleases, in order to appreciate his music, first find out about the man and his history, he is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet, very reserved, quiet and soft spoken, you don't hear him bragging about his accomplishments, and there are many, I can only dream about being able to play like him, he's still the best.
@179166 The Ventures original version, recorded in April 1962, was played on Fenders, not Mosrites. They started to use Mosrites in 1963 and the first Mosrite album was ”In Space”, which they started to record in November 1963. The album was released in January 1964.
I am also a huge fan of the ventures and have been listening to them since they started, when great guitar players are mentioned, Nokie Edwards name is right up there with the very best, every guy that started learning to play guitar in the sixties ALWAYS tried to play a Ventures song, they were the epitome of the surf music back then, then branched out and played everything, how Nokie can remember the notes to so many songs is unbelievable,
you idiots are on crack. Nokie wrote this song back in the VERY early 60's, like 1961-63 era. It was originally called Spudnik, as a joke - because of Sputnik and the big hit tune of the time, Mashed Potatoes. Then a teen surf band recorded it but changed the name to Surf Rider, figuring no one would notice... it was a hit! Nokie sued I think, got some royalties and kept the name figuring it was better than Spudnik. This is 100% Nokie's composition, period.
Bob Bogle was quoted as saying that the mgr for The Lively Ones asked permission to use "parts" of the song and The Ventures tentatively agreed as long as Nokie got the credits / royalties. The Ventures were stunned to later hear the L.O.'s release "Surf Rider" as nearly note-for-note copy of "Spudnik". The L.O.'s play the bridge part a little differently. I'm guessing they couldn't figure out how Nokie played it.
@ih8thishit The Ventures original version was recorded in April 1962 and appeared for the first time as ”Spudnik” on the ”Mashed Potatoes And Gravy” album in August 1962. The same recording, now renamed as ”Surf Rider” appeared on the ”Surfing” album, released in May 1963.
I've been a fan of the ventures since 1960 and for those of you that can't appreciate their music I suggest you go back to smoking whatever it is you smoke Jim
back in 1981 Guitar Player featured the Ventures. An interesting story about this 'Punk-Rock' group in LA. It seems that the group was so impressed by the Venures that they wrote Surf-Rider (or part of it). Check out the GP article. Nokie also took part in it and is creditied for it.
sorry. on checking the article, the song in question was "Surfin & Spyin" apparently a big hit in California. Nokie wrote this one . Sorry for the error.
this theme is more badass in pulp fiction
