I'm a jazz musician. I play the bass. I first heard this when I was 10 (my older brother, a guitarist had just bought a walkman - it was 1982). I remember looking at him while he was listening to something, swaying and really loving it. I asked if I could have a listen and it was this version of Teentown (from the 8.30 album). needless to say, it changed my life. And every time I hear it, i think back to that first time and say a little thank you to Peter, Joe, Wayne and especially to Jaco...
The version on the live compilation "Live & Unreleased" from 2002 (with Alex Acuna on drums) is also pretty jammin'- it happens to be my personal fav as the tempo is slightly fasterthan here, but this one jams too.
Could there be any recording with more energy and drive than this? (regardless that i think i hear jaco drop out early on the end) Good alarm clock track!!!
The fundamentalists of music. Abstract and geometric forms, Liquid in metal construction. Like metropolitan city in a rush and chaos, but yet harmonic.
btw. is there any chance some one could give me directions where to download the amazing "Heavy Weather" and "Mr.Gone"?
I do have those two along with "Black Market" in vinyl, but back home, and I am out in another place for a long time, and I would like to have these two in my mp3 player.

hey guys, do you think you all could watch my bass vids and drop some comments on em? id appreciate hearing your thoughts. ill be posting some more vids, so you can subscribe if you want. ill return the favor. thanks!
One correction to the list of players above. This live version off of 8:30 the drummer was Peter Erskine. Monolo and Alex Acuna were not on this recording.
Long live Jaco and Joe. I workr=ed for Weather Report from 78-80 and Jaco from 80- 82.
Either Jaco didn't get mixed in, or whoever was running the recording had him muted or potted down early. Zawinul's keys is all you hear on the whole first run. Great album though, 8:30.
I met Peter Erskine in Chicago at the NAMM Show in Chicago years ago. Very friendly mellow guy... I would have loved to have met Jaco. Maybe in another life...
malcompalm is right... this version is from the 8:30 although the first album this track was on was Heavy Weather... personally I like the live version from NY I believe was recorded in 85 but don't quote me on that.
Enough said! These cats are workin it out.I thought Jaco could'nt rip this cut any faster!Till I heard this. And yes,Erskine is real nice;but I got a chance to check Acuna live .This boy is niceeee!very clean with alot of power. I say he's faster than Erskine.
Indeed, you are are correct, ScreenEyes ...This cut's from "8:30", whicht was, arguably, the most phenomenal configuration of Weather Report ever assembled ...Joe, Wayne, Jaco and, as you've mentioned, the fabulous Peter Erskine. I saw that tour at The Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA ...Supporting acts were Pat Metheny, Sonny Rollins and Andy Narell ...12 hours of music -mind blowing!
simply just not true...compression is not used on the individual hi-hat .. as I was responding to an earlier question...read before you make stupid comments
I bought the 8:30 record before I even knew who Jaco was. Still didn't know what I had till I bought his self titled and put two and two together. Got it on vinyl, suuuuper sweet.

Erskine is great but anyone feel like I do that Acuna is vastly underrated? Maybe its just that I've played Heavy Weather to death for the last THIRTY years, but it seems like he could have pondered over every little snare accent for a week to get it just right.
You are right, he played drums on the studio version of this song. I remembered he sang and played steel drums on Heavy Weather but I'd forgotten about the skins work.
My previous statements stands, though. All hail the glory that is Acuna! (hope I spelled that correctly)

it's called "dynaimics". It's done by the drummer, playing softer, then louder.
