You still using the 300? I see you posted this video a couple of years ago. How have you liked it all this time? I ask because i'm looking to buy either the 300 Nikon or a Canon 7D
never use low priced batteries in a camera. all ways use the best batteries on the market .
i had a point and shoot camera and i used crappy batteries and after a couple of uses the camera just wouldn't work i had to send it to the manufacturer to get fixed
it costed me 400 dollars just to get the dam thing fixed.
Which lens would you recommend for the D300s? I would like to do indoor product photography, indoor/outdoor modeling photography and some landscape. I have a Nikor 24-120mm AF as well as an older Nikor 80-200mm telephoto AF...handed down to me but wondering if I need to get a new one with the D300s, thanks.
dominic, you have got the wrong battery pack to compare the continuous modes. the one you need, i wouldn't know the name without googlin' it, is a compact one, not to be filled with either batteries like you use, or a second accumulator. I got the same one as you got, and it really makes no difference
anyone who has this camera, is it good for videos? i'm a film student and want a good camera for video and stills with flash memory and my budget is £400.
I have had my eye on a sony cybershot dsc-hx1 but my dad says to look at some nikon cameras aswell.
hey dom, im trying to buy a prime lens. which one should have better and maxxed out blur? 35mm,50mm or 85mm? i cant find any infos about it on the search engine. i know its depends on the aperture..
i need a camera for shooting in low light, so basically shooting at high iso's and getting clear images with low noise.
am i looking for a high megapixel camera in order to reduce noise? i was told that a 18 megapixel image with noise cropped down to a normal jpeg looks like it has less noise than a 12 megapixel cropped down?
so out of these cameras which is the best for low light?
@RedEmpireGuy that is the intervalometer, your camera might not have one or if it is just a 2-10 second delay you are looking for read your instruction book
the d700 is full a full frame sensor camera and the d300 is a cropped sensor camera so the the d700 with full frame lenses will produce better photos depending on the photographer.
Hi, I've been wanting to upgrade from a d60, but i dont know whether to go for a d300 or d90? Which is better with iso, and which will i get the most picture quality out of? Thanks

I know next to shit about cameras and I was enticed hearing him talk about the camera. Now I Can't wait until I take photo. So I guess you have the attention span of a walnut.
Seen your website love your work. I have a Nikon D40 but plan on getting the D300 as in this week, i plan on doing alot of travling this year and want to take more serious photos. The D40 is good but everything i have heard and read about D300 make's me think that it is what i need.

HAHA. it was both 6FPS with and without the battery pack. I think you have to enable something in the menus. 8fps in other videos is much much faster.
Hi, the video response I have posted here, is of portraits taken with the Nikon D300... all natural lighting conditions. This (the D300) is my most used camera for outdoor portraits..
Nice Job introducing it dombower. I personally never use the live view... and VR capable lenses use up battery resources more quickly as does the live view. With those functions off, the battery life is amazing. I have the D80 as an emergency backup. Happy New Year!
nice review man i saw this review when i was buying mine. About a 8 months passed and i came back to this video.
The AA battery pack didn't register when you were shooting, you need shut off the camera sometimes that it changes. If you hold the info button where the screen displays it will say 6fps or 8fps when the right power is put it =)
This review was really good. Because of it I should receive my d300 and the Nikor 18-200mm lens (because of the other review). The guys at the photo shop couln't sell me on this camera better than you did. Just wanted to thank you for a professional outlook. It's unfortunate that the only place I could get a clear opinion and facts of the d300 is on you tube. Thanks again.
with and without the battery pack it shot 6fps because u didnt have the Nikon lithium battery just for that battery pack, it only improves battery life with AA batterys, its stinge but your going to need to buy the battery for 8pfs
I've always wondered how you switch between A,S,P and M mode. so, how do you do it? does it have an auto mode? i never really understood how to switch between the modes. where is the mode dial?
Goodness me. There is no "mode" dial on the D300/D700/D3. It's an aesthetic choice to separate it from the "hobbyist" bodies. You change modes by simply holding down the MODE button, and turning the back command dial.
excuse me if i offended you, but i'm quite new to photography. I've had the D40 for a year now and i'm upgrading to D80 with 24-120mm now. But i'm allready a Nikon fan. i dont like Canon, Nikon is better. The best. But next year or in some years i might upgrade to d300.
omg i live in the United States and i buy the Digital Photographer magazine from the UK at a store called Barnes and Noble it costs around 13 dollars and we just got issue 72 and i saw one of your pictures Good Job i just wanted to share that its so weird cause i just got my nikon d300 and commented on your video yesterday...
awesome! what a strange coincidence. I think we are an issue ahead over here. also Digital photographer are making a book-a-zine to be sold in bookshops where i should be having about 7 or more photos in i think (they asked for 15) feel free to send a link to any of your shots
no perticular reason, i just like it more, the layout, the lenses, the menues, and the sound of the shutter! i also think it looks cooler and it doesnt have the amature scene mode bit at the top. just apature, manual, speed and programme.
Canon is for the people who has just begun, that has not even idea of the photography, nikon and olympus are better brands(marks) .. alone canon has mark 3 ue it is a good camera other they are plastic :)
i got a question..i got a d80.and imma start doing self portraits..or fashion photagraphy..what lense would you use..i hears telephoto is a good kind ..Help
not a massive telephoto! maybe if it is faces a 105mm macro would be great but the 50mm1.8 or 1.4f are considered to be great for portraits! i am about to go buy the 50mm 1.4 for a protrait shoot later this week
real? now that is a very subjective issue. Is thinking that the feel and look to my nikon is so much better than any canon i have picked up real? is loving the sound it makes and feeling that the images are much better? is the 8fps the rugged build the ease of use etc etc... yeah i think they are. on numbers there is very little but on feel i think they are a world apart
Thanks for the Review! By the way, seems like D80 shutter speed slowed down by "Noise Reduction" function. When you take a shot with MB-D10, it sounds less than 8fps. If you use AA batteries, as batteries die, it won't make 8fps. The best way to get 8fps all the time might be buying new battery, EN-EL4a.(with battery cover! lol) Also, the dust cleaning function is called "Low-pass filter" which eliminates the dust on CMOS image sensor. Again, I really enjoyed your review! :-D Have a great day!
when testing shutter speed it looked like you had the lens cap on the d80 (maybe on auto as well), mine goes way faster then that, it is 3fps, not one like in the video.
i had it on shutter priority and thus having the lens cap on makes no difference. i always thought it sounded slower than 3fps. it seemed slower than the d40x when i had a play with that. i might get it sent to nikon to have a check of it
You could test it to make sure, before you send it to Nikon. Just look at a clock for 5 seconds, holding down the shutter release. If it really is shooting at 3 FPS, you should end up with 15 pictures. Not the most accurate test in the world, but I think it'd work alright.
if you want auto dont go for the d300 it is way to advanced for that. yes there is programme but then it sound like all the extra features on it would be wasted. what i suggest is getting the d80, great camera and also has auto and scene modes.and significantly cheeper. if you need auto dont buy a d300
first i thought it was a myth but i see it is offical now. I think it sounds really good. personally i dont have the need for a full frame. and the iso is soo good on the d300 already. it seems pretty much identical to the d300 apart from image sensor size. i personally would miss the extra distance of the aps-c size sensor gets me also vignetting gets worse with full frame. cant wait to see tests on it. but i am staying with the d300 for a good couple of years. thanks for asking
You didn't shoot 8 fps when you hade the grip on. It still was 6 fps. You have to have 8 AA batteries inside the grip and set the camera to use the grip battery first. Otherwise it won't work. I assume you already know that :P
yeah it was a bit of a woops in the video because the aa batteries were actually dead. i had obviously been going mental with the 8fps before hand. i also love the sound the nikon makes compared to the canons weak click sound
I'm a Nikon shooter, but even I have to point out a flaw in that statement, 3ULLIT. For sports and photojournalism, the D300 is probably better suited. But the Canon 5D and Nikon D300 are for two completely different things. The 5D has a full frame sensor. It has lower noise at higher ISO's than even the D300, and it's much sharper. However, it's also much slower. The 5D is better for landscape and portrait photography. D300 is for.. well.. everything else :P
im about to upgrade to a D300 and this review is cracking mate, really useful. i wonder if you'd reccomend the best place to buy just the body from? im thinking warehouse express, but a more knowledagble suggestion would be appreciated.
i got mine on line from digital rev off ebay, i was a bit worried using ebay and i dont like paypal but i was able to do a deposit at the bank and it came in about 5 working days so i would really recomend them. they are also super cheap.
hey nice purchase dude, you said nikon reight not nee kon . haha just wondering with the d300 it doesn't seem like it have A, S , P priority ? i know theres no AUTO mode so how do you take photos with it ?
However, one of the things that I think people don't talk about enough in their reviews is the actual image quality. 6-8 FPS is nice, but I can't see it being useful for me in too many situations, since I primarily shoot nature, not fast action events. Right now I have a Nikon D40. Do you think the image quality and color reproduction of the D300 is worth the $1700 upgrade? Have you noticed your images getting better since your purchase of the D300?

can you help me^^, what is better canon 400d or nikon d300 / d3000 ???
MrChill111 1 year ago
@MrChill111
That's a bit of a broad question.
The D3000 and 400D are comparable, but you can't compare the 400D to the D300. It's a completely different class of camera.
A better comparison would be the D300 against the canon 40 or 50D, or the 7D.
Those are all excellent cameras. The 40D is incredible value bought second hand, and the 7D is pretty much the same performance wise as the D300S.
Have a look at lenses. It's much better to get an expensive lens than an expensive camera.

HAHA. it was both 6FPS with and without the battery pack. I think you have to enable something in the menus. 8fps in other videos is much much faster.
chadsexinton 3 years ago
That's what I thought--they sounded the same, lol.
Good review though. I like the accent. :P I can't wait to have a D300 and a few more primes to complement my D40.

I just bought my D300 and can not wait for Fedex to deliver. Great review by the way.

Happy New Year!

i just got the d300 where can i get the battery pack
djb7706 3 years ago
nice review man i saw this review when i was buying mine. About a 8 months passed and i came back to this video.
The AA battery pack didn't register when you were shooting, you need shut off the camera sometimes that it changes. If you hold the info button where the screen displays it will say 6fps or 8fps when the right power is put it =)

Good review fella! I was looking at these but didnt feel that i would benefit much from upgrading from my D200!
nerdishtech 3 years ago
This review was really good. Because of it I should receive my d300 and the Nikor 18-200mm lens (because of the other review). The guys at the photo shop couln't sell me on this camera better than you did. Just wanted to thank you for a professional outlook. It's unfortunate that the only place I could get a clear opinion and facts of the d300 is on you tube. Thanks again.

glad to help out, feel free to post up a video of your photos would be very interested in seeing your shots
dombower 2 years ago
with and without the battery pack it shot 6fps because u didnt have the Nikon lithium battery just for that battery pack, it only improves battery life with AA batterys, its stinge but your going to need to buy the battery for 8pfs
akfortykevinn 3 years ago
Do you think you could make a quick video showing how to flip that lens hood? It looks interesting
mikes1984 3 years ago
I am getting a d300 this month because it is my bar mitzvah. for some reason i cant stop watching this.

I've always wondered how you switch between A,S,P and M mode. so, how do you do it? does it have an auto mode? i never really understood how to switch between the modes. where is the mode dial?
esbenaasgaard 3 years ago
Goodness me. There is no "mode" dial on the D300/D700/D3. It's an aesthetic choice to separate it from the "hobbyist" bodies. You change modes by simply holding down the MODE button, and turning the back command dial.

excuse me if i offended you, but i'm quite new to photography. I've had the D40 for a year now and i'm upgrading to D80 with 24-120mm now. But i'm allready a Nikon fan. i dont like Canon, Nikon is better. The best. But next year or in some years i might upgrade to d300.
esbenaasgaard 3 years ago
dont worry i am in the same place. lol. i had the d40x and i just upgraded to the d300. and i still am learning somthing new evreyday

omg i live in the United States and i buy the Digital Photographer magazine from the UK at a store called Barnes and Noble it costs around 13 dollars and we just got issue 72 and i saw one of your pictures Good Job i just wanted to share that its so weird cause i just got my nikon d300 and commented on your video yesterday...
Atlixco1984 3 years ago
awesome! what a strange coincidence. I think we are an issue ahead over here. also Digital photographer are making a book-a-zine to be sold in bookshops where i should be having about 7 or more photos in i think (they asked for 15) feel free to send a link to any of your shots
dombower 3 years ago
i just got my d300 just wanted to share :)dude i saw your website really cool photographs!
Atlixco1984 3 years ago
which is that lens?
Maalevolent 3 years ago
the nikon 18-200vr
dombower 3 years ago
why nikon over canon???
GETonMYlevel323 3 years ago
no perticular reason, i just like it more, the layout, the lenses, the menues, and the sound of the shutter! i also think it looks cooler and it doesnt have the amature scene mode bit at the top. just apature, manual, speed and programme.
dombower 3 years ago
Canon is for the people who has just begun, that has not even idea of the photography, nikon and olympus are better brands(marks) .. alone canon has mark 3 ue it is a good camera other they are plastic :)
Maalevolent 3 years ago
i got a question..i got a d80.and imma start doing self portraits..or fashion photagraphy..what lense would you use..i hears telephoto is a good kind ..Help
GETonMYlevel323 3 years ago
not a massive telephoto! maybe if it is faces a 105mm macro would be great but the 50mm1.8 or 1.4f are considered to be great for portraits! i am about to go buy the 50mm 1.4 for a protrait shoot later this week
dombower 3 years ago
what lenses do you have (all)
uscgswimmers 3 years ago
nikon 18-200 vr, sigma 105mm macro sigma 10-20mm wide angle and now the tokina 11-16mm f2.8

Is there any real reason why you choose Nikon Over Canon?
danmancity14 3 years ago
real? now that is a very subjective issue. Is thinking that the feel and look to my nikon is so much better than any canon i have picked up real? is loving the sound it makes and feeling that the images are much better? is the 8fps the rugged build the ease of use etc etc... yeah i think they are. on numbers there is very little but on feel i think they are a world apart
dombower 3 years ago
Fair enough,
but thanks for the Sigma lens reviews
i am in the middle of purchasing the Canon 40D and Sigma 10-20mm
danmancity14 3 years ago
great camera and great lens i am sure you will have a lot of fun with it. good luck if you have a flicker account please tell
dombower 3 years ago
Come to think of it i meant to set one up the other day lol
however the only images i have at the moment come from my EOS 400D so they will have the similar quality and look of your D80 Images
by the way i am upgrading my 400D because of underexposure errors
danmancity14 3 years ago
without sounding rude, and please dont answer if you think it is inappropriate,
but how can you afford such a high quality and amazing photographic kit ?
danmancity14 3 years ago
does it come with that lense
GETonMYlevel323 3 years ago
i am sure it probibly does now. check out digital rev on ebay they are great
dombower 3 years ago
yes three of them.
hoah 3 years ago
Thanks for the Review! By the way, seems like D80 shutter speed slowed down by "Noise Reduction" function. When you take a shot with MB-D10, it sounds less than 8fps. If you use AA batteries, as batteries die, it won't make 8fps. The best way to get 8fps all the time might be buying new battery, EN-EL4a.(with battery cover! lol) Also, the dust cleaning function is called "Low-pass filter" which eliminates the dust on CMOS image sensor. Again, I really enjoyed your review! :-D Have a great day!

I think the lens shade is on backwards?
Sbeer12 3 years ago
haha! It is, but you can put it on like that to make it more compact.
SynthesizedLife 3 years ago
yep it is but i wasnt needing the shade on so when i am not needing it i put it on backwards to make it mroe compact
dombower 3 years ago
Thanks!
DJHOGHEAD 3 years ago
when testing shutter speed it looked like you had the lens cap on the d80 (maybe on auto as well), mine goes way faster then that, it is 3fps, not one like in the video.
engjds 3 years ago
i had it on shutter priority and thus having the lens cap on makes no difference. i always thought it sounded slower than 3fps. it seemed slower than the d40x when i had a play with that. i might get it sent to nikon to have a check of it
dombower 3 years ago
You could test it to make sure, before you send it to Nikon. Just look at a clock for 5 seconds, holding down the shutter release. If it really is shooting at 3 FPS, you should end up with 15 pictures. Not the most accurate test in the world, but I think it'd work alright.
bl4ckprint 3 years ago
Does the D300 also got a auto mode (or something like that)?
Because I'm not really a pro with al the settings. And want to take some pictures fast without adjusting all the settings.
niburu2012 3 years ago
if you want auto dont go for the d300 it is way to advanced for that. yes there is programme but then it sound like all the extra features on it would be wasted. what i suggest is getting the d80, great camera and also has auto and scene modes.and significantly cheeper. if you need auto dont buy a d300
dombower 3 years ago
Congratulations for the correct pronunciation of Nikon! lol...Great camera though, i have only D40 which is still great!
Guapwong 3 years ago
what do you think about the upcoming d700 dom?
den0712 3 years ago
first i thought it was a myth but i see it is offical now. I think it sounds really good. personally i dont have the need for a full frame. and the iso is soo good on the d300 already. it seems pretty much identical to the d300 apart from image sensor size. i personally would miss the extra distance of the aps-c size sensor gets me also vignetting gets worse with full frame. cant wait to see tests on it. but i am staying with the d300 for a good couple of years. thanks for asking
dombower 3 years ago
D700 will have 1 stop better ISO than D300 (ie 6400 as opposed to D300s 3200)
RossNW 3 years ago
that sounds good but not really 1000 pounds extra good, and the d300s iso rocks anyway i doesnt really sway it for me. thanks for the info though
dombower 3 years ago
great camera cant wait to get mine!
Atlixco1984 3 years ago
You didn't shoot 8 fps when you hade the grip on. It still was 6 fps. You have to have 8 AA batteries inside the grip and set the camera to use the grip battery first. Otherwise it won't work. I assume you already know that :P
Nice vidoe btw.
Elixmannen 3 years ago
yeah it was a bit of a woops in the video because the aa batteries were actually dead. i had obviously been going mental with the 8fps before hand. i also love the sound the nikon makes compared to the canons weak click sound
dombower 3 years ago
Dont think so that the D300 would be worst in noise then the 5D, even if its fullframe.
3ULLIT 3 years ago
Great video my son! I cant wait to get mine! It kills the 5D also.
3ULLIT 3 years ago

Luana007 3 years ago
hey nice purchase dude, you said nikon reight not nee kon . haha just wondering with the d300 it doesn't seem like it have A, S , P priority ? i know theres no AUTO mode so how do you take photos with it ?
reggieschuey 3 years ago
yep it does have a p s and m priority. you have to click the mode button by the shutter button and rotate the back dial.
dombower 3 years ago
i cant belive it! first time i hear propper nikon pronounce! best wishes mate!
nabassu 3 years ago 2
Nice video review, as always.
Thanks
