  • Too bad she's a plagiarist.

  • <3 Yoko Kanno

  • 俺韓国人だけど、この人パクリの件はどうなってるんです?韓国では結局どうなったかは知らされてないんで、わかんないよ。

  • One of the best damned soundtracks EVER.

  • her ghost in the shell music is the best music i have ever heard in a series, film, or anything else video related... stunning, absolutely number one!

  • I have no idea what she said but shes awesome

  • I love Yoko Kanno -3

  • It may not be worth it to pick up more Japanese just so I can understand these videos, though. Maybe one day, but Japanese is a hard language.

  • I understood here and there... I think I heard her say something about that Russian singer not wanting to or knowing how to sing a lot in Japanese... and then something about she has a wonderful voice anyway...

  • @bun223 Origa maybe ? D: because of the song and because she's Russian XD

  • @Strawberrymusique yeah doesn't Origa live in Japan, too? I really like her sound. I can't blame Origa if she's having problems with Japanese, 'cause it's hard!!! But for me, once you can understand your favorite song lyrics..... it's more than worth it... plus, I was able to translate parts of the Martin Luther King speech to some girls I met who did not know any English, but they didn't stay in America long enough to REALLY learn American politics

  • @bun223 yeah definitely Japanese is a hard language, I even have problems with my English sometimes (and English is not that complicated as Japanese), so learn Japanese to sing a song all of the sudden may be a hard task. Ohh that's wonderful and yeah it is worth it ~ I wish someday I could learn it too

  • @Strawberrymusique tu parles francais comme premiere langue?

  • @bun223 oh nono, I understand a liiiitle bit, like what are you saying right know, but that's because my main language is Spanish haha so i'm just guessing

  • @Strawberrymusique ok asi que hablas espanol. Estoy aprendolo ahora en la Universidad de Michigan. Para ser maestra.

  • Why do people love her so much considering so much of her music is other peoples slightly changed ?

  • the female equivalent to Thom Yorke. just a brilliant arranger, composer, and songwriter

  • @JHolmes17 Yoko Kanno is on a whole other galaxy away from earth. Thom Yorke is good but he in no way compares to Yoko Kanno AT ALL. Bjork and Thom are more of an equivalent of each other.

  • AWW man I can't understand a thing but I love her!! XD

  • I like and admire various composers, including Kanno and Hisaishi mentioned here.

I think her own words, which I like, aptly reflect her sentiments. She has commented something to the effect of 'I had been hurt being called a "Jane (or Jack) of all trades and a master of none". However, continue doing this for 10 years and you become a golden Jane of all trades, so there! Anything wrong with being able to do everything?'.

  • @kxakxa Nothing at all, my friend, nothing at all.

  • Hey guys, I'm getting worked up. By both sides. Just stop worshiping Kanno. And stop treat her as a plagiarist fake. Reality is more trivial. As usual.

  • Yoko Kanno you are a shining star, thank you for your awesome music.

  • I don't understand a word but she' s soo cute :)

  • I love Yoko Kanno.

Not in a rapey way, but in a hero worship way.

  • I think she is a bit overrated, her music is varied but mostly they are very simple. I have yet to find some complex pieces from her to see she is a true composer not just a musician, by complex I mean what HGW did for MGS3 soundtrack.

Joe Hisaishi is certainly capable in this regard.

  • @kanonathena

If you're looking for a complex piece that very well establishes her as a COMPOSER, have you listened at "Shiro Long Tail" or "Go to Rakuen" from the Wolf's Rain OST? I think they are plenty enough to show a good portion of her talent. You may have your opinion but denying that she is a composer just by the "simplicity" of her pieces is completely absurd.

Joe Hisaishi is an excelent composer, and so is Yoko Kanno,

  • love you <3

  • why don't we all just agree to worship Yoko Kanno? there are to manyt gods we just nee one.

  • if i only learned japanease

  • 4:18

About Origa, she is saying, she loves her voice most in the world.

  • I love that gal! Thanks for the music Youko san!

  • Ella es excepcional

  • i'm gonna marry her. I swear to God.

  • Sutando arone konpurekksu *lol*

  • One of the few composers left of original anime theme music.

Rare in a business that is increasingly using J Pop songs as themes in order to promote a band.

  • thieft

  • lol apparently Ed from CBebop is based on her :D

  • yes she did. The music in cowboy bebop is performed by her band "the seatbelts".

  • did she also do the music for cowboy bebop

  • She sounded like Motoko on Helium. o_O

  • Say what?

  • Comment removed

  • OK, here's one thing I never understand; Why do peopel write the video description in English when the video doesn't even have subtitles??? It's really annoying...

  • Right or wrong, English is often used as a common language on the internet. How else will an Italian or French Yoko Kanno fan -who probably won't care about sub- find this vid? Think about that. It's kinda annoying having to hear native English speakers complain all the time when they are the lucky ones: most people have harder time finding subs in their lang.

  • You're correct, English is a common internest language, but far from my mother tounge ;) I like English subs cause i like The Seatbelts, and I'm interested in understanding what she has to say. I don't speak Japanese, and I doub't to many French or Italians do eighter. Offcourse I wish I could learn Japanese, but until then subs would really be appreciated. I'm not trying to be an asshole, im just frustrated cause I'm pretty sure that this is a great interview :)

  • I understand, we all get frustrated when we can't understand. Sorry for assuming things and coming on strong.

  • Just to clarify, my point is that internationally there are people who would want to find and watch this vid with or without subtitles.

  • No worries man ;) Myself I think it's great as well to see the people behind the magic, but I just like to hear more about the music etc.

  • 100% signed man. Didn't anyone do that until now? Hard to imagine.

  • OK, guys! Here comes a rough translation. Yoko Kanno: Before composing, I watched the Gits and found there're a lot of terms, which means the atmosphere can easily become too solid. So I decided to make tunes rhythmical, just like driving. I always try not to just obey director's orders while composing. And this time, thankfully, director didn't asked me much, so I concentrated on complementing the show. And, Gits is cool. This is why I made my tunes emotional. ---- Ask me if you need more.
  • Thanks MrShu001 :)

  • hey! :D i would like to know what Yoko says about the inner universe song. I love this song so much :D thank you!

  • Thanks for the reply silversky123!

As to the song, she states:

I found many people, including the director, thought the theme song should be sung by a female vocalist. So I looked for a suitable female vocalist in my memory, and came up with Origa. This was mainly because I just loved her voice more than anybody else in the world. Her voice sounds like coming from the pit of her stomach. So I composed specifically for her, then ask her to sing just as she feels. The result was inner universe.

  • your welcome. thank you for translating :D

it be great if Yoko and her team would perform! it be so awesome. i think Kenji Kawai and Yoko Kanno captured Ghost in the shells music very well. love them!

  • she sounds like a lil girl but she rulz

  • Yoko Kanno ! The Best !

  • if someone gave me just this segment on a vhs tape i would be beside myself with gratefullness.

  • She's cute. And damned good.

  • Definitely my favorite contemporary composer!

  • Hey Everyone!

My name is Kevin. I'm a 16 year old composer. Yoko Kanno is a huge inspiration to my music and I hope to be able to write as magically as her in the near future. I would really appreciate it if everyone could visit my channel and view the work available. Thank you to everyone!

  • Kanno Yoko san has a long track record for creating musical scores on time and of the highest quality. This is why she's been composing for many, many years. She worked on the original Macross with Mari Iijima who's also a damn good music writer back in the 80's.

  • subs please?

  • Best composer in history. Period.

  • I'm not sure Kanno Yoko san is the best composer in history, but she is a good one at that. I think John Williams and James Horner probably rank somewhere in the best catagory. Yoko san does have an awesome style though. When you hear it, you just know it's from her. :)

  • yoko kanno is amazing.

  • sub please

  • long live the queen of anime music!

  • wow, talened and beautiful

  • Ever since Bebop! She's awsome!

  • She is the best !

  • きゃあ!ナレが諏訪部さんじゃんか!!

  • Yes and Yes. She is very genius. She created very unique songs. Until now i want to about what language in ghost in the shell SAC OST 3, which is "Take little hand. " That's one of my favorite songs. play that song more than 50 times. Any body know what language is that?

  • it's either japanese or russian i think i can't remember where origa/olga is from she's probably the one that sang it if not my bad lol

  • Russian/english/ even a bit of latin. Origa is a russian/japanese singer. and yoko kanno is her composer.

  • Most SAC openings are done by Origa so that mean it should be in Russian with some engish maybe. Since Origa is a russian/japanese singer.

  • I think origa and rise are ancient japanese language or russian not sure bu tim preety sure its some kind of japanese

  • its russian

  • yeah lol I just figured it out a few hours ago lolz Russian is such a beautiful language

  • the opening was sang by Origa. Yes, it was Russian. I love it. The other one, "Take little hand" soundtrack from Ghost in the shell SAC solid stage society. You can check on youtube or google it. The song was sang by Gabriella Robin. I asked a few friends, they said " It was gibberish or something". Seriously, That's amazing idea, if she created a language for a song.

  • ¡anticonstitucionalísimamente! xD

  • Damn it I really need to learn Japanese.

  • yeah am studing it right now

  • This lady is an absolute genius, and antidisestablishmentarianism.

  • So that's the genius behind the great music for GiTS, dang it's pretty cool to see who she is :)

  • yea. to bad there's not much else. =P

  • 話し方聞いてるとすごく賢い人なんだなってわかる。

    声とのギャップがまた。

  • i wish it had eng subs..

  • A whole page filled with arguing whether yoko is a milf.

    JESUS!!

  • Yoko Kanno is a MILF!

  • whats a milf?

  • Mature/mother I'd Like to Fuck

    And Yoko Kanno is one.

  • Considering your user name, I am just going to say you are being ironic.

  • i just think shes 2 old and leave my name alone.

  • That's good and all but as someone who dates an older woman, I can say that you shouldn't limit yourself to women by how much older than you they are.

  • It's all a matter of opinion, of course.

  • yep.

  • In cartoon form?

  • yoko kanno is still a beautiful and a great... uhm singer?

  • Actually, she's a composer. She has composed the scores for countless anime, including GITS SAC, Cowboy Bebop, The Vision of Escaflowne, Wolf's Rain, Silent Mobius, and Macross Plus. She is amazing, because she can compose music in so many different styles, including jazz, classical, rock, pop, rennaisance, and electronica. She's produced dozens of CDs. I collect her music.

  • she's actually pretty hot. that's a damn surprise. Usually the minds behind all our most beautiful anime are ugly as fuck. Look at Inuyasha's creator, and bleach.

  • She's beautiful, considering she's almost 50.

  • ♥ Yoko ♥ Kanno ♥

  • I've got the CD. Love it.

  • Where did you get it from?

I find Yoko Kanno is a genius. Her music is very modern, but has...something that's lacking in music these days..

  • i absolutely love Kanno-sama kimi wa kirei ne tottemo kirei, hope i got that right

  • Too bad I only know how to speak English

  • I'm just learning japanese but they speak so fast and I know so little of the language as of yet that I was only able to catch Ojisan (Grandpa) and sukoshi (a little)besides the few english and Japanese words borrowed from english.

  • ok, if yoko kanno's here, they should'a had origa too

  • why? yoko does all the writing and producing...

  • so? origa does all the si....

yeah yer right, that's an interview fer another day

  • I agree!

  • what a shame that there are no subtitles, i'd love to hear what she's saying...

  • It is the first time I hear her voice...she sounds so sweet...

  • I'd love to meet her in person!

  • Truly A genius.!

  • yuki kajiura and yoko kanno should have a battle!

  • She looks around 30 when she doesn't dye her hair.

    (In fact, over 40)

One of the most underrated person in Anime world.

  • Truly one of the best composers, no one and I mean no one in America can fuck with her.

  • @MackBone6765

Except for John Williams since she does plagiarize his work quite often.

  • @Einhander49:

    Bullshit.

Everyone willing to dedicate an hour or so investigating the plagiarism accusations made against her a few years back will soon discover that they're entirely baseless, made of blatant jealousy and invented by American nationalists who can't take it that of all people a female Japanese composer is declassing every single (male) one of their own.

Besides, John Williams is already plagiarizing himself over and over again with every new soundtrack he writes.

  • @as12df12

Don't just spew shit out of your mouth, son. Post some videos with audio samples proving otherwise. Oh wait, you can't. Because as it stands she is guilty as charged. Just look at the countless examples provided here on youtube that clearly indicate plagiarism. Your chipmunk is guilty as charged. you can't just waltz in here and state that without any proof like a 12 year old on a temper tantrum that wants it his way.

  • @Einhander49:

I won't waste my time proving anything to some self-righteous racist, as _countless_ others have debunked those accusations here on youtube and elsewhere already. If you insist, flaws include wrong dates, conveniently omitting that there has been a cooperation between Kanno and the artists, and downright baseless choice of pieces that sound only superficially similar at best.

Funny that Kanno's "versions" are always more sophisticated from a musical standpoint...

  • @as12df12

Well, let me set one thing straight - I never claimed Kanno sucked. In fact, I enjoy her work for the most part. However, what irks me the wrong way is when someone proclaims her the best thing ever out of Japan when there are far better talents in Joe Hisaishi and Kenji Kawai.

  • @Einhander49

    >best thing ever out of Japan

    She arguably is.

    >better talents in Joe Hisaishi and Kenji Kawai

Well, I have to disagree. They're certainly world-class soundtrack composers, but... I don't know how much of YK's work you know; for once they lack her incredible musical versatility, and they don't quite approach her sheer genius at composing chord progressions and arranging harmonies (but than again, IMO no one does. Those three qualities really make her stand out, even among the best).

  • @Einhander49 [cont]

The personal conclusion I arrived at after 15 years of studying/making music myself is that she is the most accomplished composer alive, and among the best of the past and current century. Of course you can reasonably think otherwise, but when applying strictly objective criteria (as far as this is even possible), you'd at least be hard pressed finding anything that anyone does distinctly better than her.

  • @Einhander49 [cont]

Even though I had to spread this over 3 comments, I actually don't feel like endlessly dragging this argument. But I do want to stress that this is an informed opinion, it's not just blind fanboy-ism. And I stand ready to defend this claim.

  • @Einhander49 Dude. There are only so many sequences of tones that sound pleasing to the human ear. Collisions are bound to happen. Why do you think shitty sounding 12 tone music was invented? To enlarge the space of acceptable compositions.

  • one more thing she looks better with long black hair

  • Yes,Yes!!

  • does anyone know where I can download cloe?It is the only song of yoko kanno's that I can't seem to find anywhere.

  • Actually try searhing "Ghost in the Shell OSTs lot of the tracks were composed or sung by Yoko Kanno. You will love it.

  • I know,I've heard it all over, I just can't find the song to download....he hee I've even tried looking up japanese characters to search for it...I accidentally ended up downloading somekind of virus....anyway thanks I will try to look up ghost in the shell.

  • one of the best composer in the world...

  • er i wish i knew what she was saying

  • lol shes so cute, her voice is so pretty X3

O: not only that but she makes kick ass music.

  • WOW GREAT!! It present all the sound tracks in Ghost in the SHell

  • can anyone post a Translation of what she is saying here?

I would very much like to hear her comments on Inner Universe, especially. All I understood was Origa.

  • Shinigami1016 wrote:

    I've never heard a song of her's that I didn't like.

Second that. I cant imagine such a talent in one person. To master so many different styles... And she seems to be really kind person too. She is definately one of my most admired composers.

  • oh btw...she have that cute lil nihongo girl voice ^_^

  • so much talent, and beautiful too.

    thank you yoko!

  • I've never heard a song of her's that I didn't like.

  • i've been listening to her music since i was little. ironically i always believed she was the singer for all the songs. but i know she does a lil singing here and there i just dont know which songs.

  • i understand her

  • I did not know she would look like that

  • Yeah i would like to meet her to. Hope she can speak English to.

  • Most Japanese ppl can understand English...but they rarely speak it fluently.

  • i LOVE kanno yoko's voice. it's soooo cute!

  • there she is. the legend. my goal in life is to meet her at least once. shes the greatest musician iv ever heard :) long live yoko kanno

  • me enamore!

  • omg her voice does not mach her but

i admire her , shes a great singer, i dident realise how long she was singing for, by the sould of her voice she sounds really young!

  • shes not a singer lol shes a composer...

  • shes both

  • Yet another person who thinks that when it says "yoko kanno" on their mp3 song, they think that it's the name of the singer.

  • Not necessarily. Speculation points to her actually being "Gabriella Robin".

  • Oh God, is the first time I saw her talking, I just hear her voice and reminds me to Gabriella Robin! I tought it was imposible but now I'm more convinced!

  • Utada?! As in the one who sang "Beautiful world" for the Rebuild of Evangelion movie? Hmm...I can see the connection there...but I think that's a Japanese thing which they all share. If you looked back at the original Evangelion series singer, Takahashi Yoko, you'd see similar features too.

    よう子は一番だ。彼女の声は、天使の声のようです。 Definitely.

  • Besides, she somehow reminds me of Utada! I mean, the looks... could it be...they are/// relatives??? ha-ha!!!

  • Ahhh! She is not only a talented composer, one of the greatest of Japan -but also so gentle and cute!!!and nice-looking!oh,I just adore her!!!Go-go, Yoko!!!

  • i don't even like anime and i LOVE this woman's work, she is definitely one of the great contemporary composers. she fkin works in every style O.o
