@Hamporkcheese "Am i the only one that thinks Oscar plays too much during other peoples solos??? "
No you're not. Don't get me wrong. Oscar is BADAZZ!!! But as an accompanist, I wouldn't necessarily choose him. I have a recording of him on Pablo Records with Sarah Vaughan and he played all over her singing sometimes too much IMO. Sarah obviously didn't mind it though otherwise he would have backed off I'm sure and Sarah is a giant in her own right.
Wow, just wow.I used to hate Jazz music but somehow after listening to older music of the 60's or so and more of Jazz music, I've come to realize Jazz music is TRUE music and TRUE art. How can they come up with that understandable tune impromptu like that?! It's more than just talent. And they enjoy it. Even if it's with rehearsal, I can't imagine the passion I see, and the movement of fingers so easy and natural.
I'm just amazed! This is the 1st time I've listened to Jazz from start to end!!
The musicians are great, the sound mix really sucks. Joe Pass is completely overwhelmed by the rest of the group during his solo. A real shame, it could have been an all time great performance. All that said, it is still worth it for Oscar's performance.
I thank you for this video which you makes us shared and yes Oscar is one of by far better pianist of jazz as well as Joe in the guitar, and the others, mamamia than it is hell all this.
Must have been right around 1975 I saw Ella, Oscar, and Joe at the Golden Hall in San Diego, CA. Wow! Seeing these videos gives me the chicken skin once again baby.....
Oscar and Joe.I don't think something like that will ever repeat.Maybe in a style of it's own but these two are devouring music and loving it.Thnx for posting.Sounds better than some studio recordings now days...
It doesn't get better than this. Almost all of the musical jazz titans are gone. Thank God so many of these historic moments were preserved. Thanks for posting this!
I love when he breaks out the rag style at the end. He does it better than Tatum even though he probably wouldn't agree. Peterson is like the definition of the one-man-band.
THis is probably one of the most amazing performances.. EVER! i've never seen Oscar so flaming! The "duel" between Oscar and Joe is absolutely amazing too! :o
Bass solo.. it's just one really crazy and VERY impressing performance!
muy buenos todos los musicos pero joe pass era un fuera de serie, lastima que oscar p. no lo dejara lucir.. su piano suena altisimo de volumen no me gustó su protagonismo
@MrRad999 I know what you mean. I started playing clarinet in grade school and was pretty good. When I was 17 I discovered Benny Goodman - after trying for a week to come close to the master, I switched to the bass clarinet. The irony here is that Oscar quit playing piano for two months after hearing Art Tatum play Tiger Rag - so I guess the lesson is don't be intimidated - just appreciate the giants for their gift and work hard on your own.
@30percentplusreturns The Queen just unveiled a life-size bronze statue of OP sitting at his grand, it is adjacent to The Art Centre in Ottawa (The Capital of Canada)
The bass player is Canadian Dave Young, who worked with Oscar for 25 years. He often would play with Oscar because NHOP didn't like to fly. He's also an amazing classical musician (was principal double bassist for Edmonton and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.) Jazz is filled with great side men who never really received acclaim for their individual work but are valued by their fellow musicians.
@jimraw1 For a wonderful exploration into Dave Young's awesome ability w/ the best guitarist whom has ever lived (or at least equal to), Lenny Breau, check "Live At Bourbon St." by the two. It has been one of my favourites since the moment I heard it.
