Chevy kept the Powerglide way too long, even in the Corvette. While the industry had pretty much moved to three speed autos by this time, GM kept the Powerglide into the 1970's. It blunted performance. By 50mph or so, it would no longer kick down, so you were stuck in top gear when you needed power to pass.
@starladear002 Interesting point! Chevy got their hands burned when they brought out Turboglide...transmission failures because some wanted to peel out in Gr, which was really not meant for that...it was for braking going down major hills. No question that multiple gears made the transmission more flexible. I think perhaps smoothness may have been an overriding goal in the 50's..Powerglide and 2 speed Dynaflow were smooth..Hydramatic relatively harsh, depending on adjustment. Thanks! :)Jack
@ccolimon Motorama was really a great effort at GM...back in the day they could not only show their new cars, but their dream cars too! GM was flush with money in those days! I used to go to GM's exhibit at the front of Steel Pier, Atlantic City, every time I was there! Thanks! :) Jack
Wow theres more style in one inner door panel of that car than any new car today. Its beautiful and built like a sherman tank as well. Too bad automakers dont have any pride these days.
@mercmarc I think they are so busy copying each other in many cases, I have difficulty telling them apart! Sad that everything has to look like a Toyota! Thanks for the comment! :) Jack
Jack, I remember riding my bike down to the local Chevy dealer to see the all new '60 Chevys. Remember that like it was yesterday. Thanks for the memory.
@55lincoln Hey, Warren! My pleasure! Those were the days....only the occasional "spy photograph" would surface before introduction..and that would probably be heavily disguised. The cars arrived wrapped before introduction day! Ah, there was drama in those days..before cable! LOL! Thanks! :D Jack
Jack, General Motors theme for Chevrolet for many years was "deliver more than expected for the price." This is a great example of successfully accomplishing the goal. The features, styling, performance, quality and value this car were hard to surpass for the price. Total production for the Chevy Impala in 1960 was 511,925. Of that 79,903 were convertibles. Original base price was $2,847. The color is Roman Red. That 283 has either 170 or 230 HP. Tires look like bias repo's. Exceptional car.
@jferg7159 Hey, Joe! Thanks for the stats on that! Yeah, with the development of power accessories, there became less reason to buy the expensive models. There was virtually no difference in size between this big car and the upscale models..the only difference might be the status points for the status car in the driveway! Thanks! :) Jack
Wow, this car is absolutely stunning, I'm sure if you looked in the dictionary under 'Concours d'Elegance' there would be a picture of this car there, and if there isn't ... There should be ! :)
My grandfather had a 1967 impala ss 327 with 4speed red interior and red paint. Guess what happen hurricane Betsy washed it out. It was his first brand new car he bought too.
@jayrod68 Hey, Jay! So sorry to hear of the fate of the 67. It's something we live with in hurricane territory...a rare tornado came through here a couple years ago..

Nice hub caps with spinners - sadly I think you can't have these on new cars. This one looks almost better than new.

@cheddyrod Hey, Chester! Yeah, spinners went out in the mid 60's...too bad! I would agree with better than new! Thanks! :) Jack
