I really didn't like this game and I love JRPGs. I got it in highschool and it just never hooked me in. Maybe beating things up with a bat doesn't have enough fantasy in it for me.

Earthbound will not be released on VC. Here is why. This Game was Made in conjunction with Ape/Creatures inc. So They would have to Pay money for that. One of the Runaway 5 songs sounds like "Blame it on Yoko Ono" By the beatles. Which REALLY would suck if they got into lawsuits. Finally there's the fact that it floped in original sales. Nintendo isn't just afriad of another loss of cash, they are also worried about lawsuit and copyright.

@AVGNZero Whats wrong with the game? Personally i think the game is 100x better than the games they make nowadays. Most games now focus on graphics than gameplay, story,and music. Not to mention most games now are very short. A average of 5-10 hours. Look at the Halo series, Halo focus more on graphics than actual gameplay. Well, it is pretty obvious that mother 3 is very adult for a video game... but mother 2, Earthbound has quite a number of legal manners that would now fly in court, rather than in the past, when it wasn't a known game before.
Not only do you automatically win against weak foes, but they actually had the sense to try and run away before battle when you were stronger. That's a feature I sorely missed when playing FF12.
I think EarthBound is getting a tiny bit too much credit here. Sweet Home was an RPG that took place in modern times and it had a horror style to it. It was released only a few months after Mother 1 and it paved the way for the survival horror genre. Also, the heroes were kids in Final Fantasy 3. Saying that EarthBound is better than most RPGs because of its setting and style isn't a good argument.
I might be in the minority here...BUT..I didn't overly care for Earthbound. I didn't think it was horrible..it was a decent game. It just wasn't one of my favorites...I played it for an hour or two and just wasn't interested enough to continue.

Awesome review, but Derek is forgetting one game that came out at around the same time which rivaled, and in a couple of ways, was even better than Earthbound. That game in Chrono Trigger. Don't get me wrong, I love both games, but when compared side to side, Chrono Trigger just barely beats Earthbound.

I agree. Replay value is something that RPGs MUST have, and IMO, Earthbound does not have it. Same stuff happens with the same players. I honestly believe that Derek was being as fanboyish in Earthbound as he was with Mega Man 9 (although in a GOOD way). Final Fantasy 1, Dragon Quest/Warrior 3, Chrono Trigger all have much better higher replay values than Earthbound, and IMO are better for that reason.
@bigjew899 Earthbound is a game you can play once, but take a long time to play. The Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest/Warrior games were made with replay value in mind. Chrono Trigger is probably the best RPG in terms of replay value seeing as you can unlock about 10 different endings.

One thing does need to be said about your reasoning for not releasing Mother 3...The famed Pheonix Wright series was in the same boat. The extremely popular DS games we love were originally GBA games in Japan. There's no reason to not translate and up-port. I don't think most PW fans even realize they're playing a GBA era game.

You are right about Earthbound. But apparently it doesn't have a good chance to come out on VC because of how the soundtrack is heavily sampled from music around that time. When the starmen.net guys visited Nintendo of America, they actually were excited to see the fan translation of Mother 3. Hardcore fans should check out the Earthbound Anthology.

I remember when my brother begged my mom for this game because of how cool the box looked. I tried to convince him that it wasn't worth it but my mom gave in to his begging and bought it. Earthbound became my all time favorite game. I feel very very stupid for telling my brother to not buy it.
New gamers should experience this unique RPG series and wonder why Ness and Lucas were in Brawl.
Marth had not debuted in Smash Bros. along with other game characters who debuted in a crossover game before their core franchise were exported into this country. A case with Europeans with Ness and worldwide with Lucas.
I'm also ecstatic that they've finally released a DS remake of Dragon Quest V and are going to release VI. I'm already a proud owner of the former as well as the newest DQIX. Can't wait for DQX on the Wii but as far as I know there hasn't been any news on that in a year. :(
This is a great review of one of the greats of video game history. I've always loved Earthbound and had no idea the rest of the series had fan translations.
Dragon Warrior (Quest) I-IV were my first ever video game RPGs. My whole family loved and played them for a long time. My parents sold the cartridges on eBay back when eBay was a totally new entity. Kind of sad. But I don't think they're as rare as you say in this video.
The most hilarious part of this was that he made fun of the name Poo, then he renamed him Butts. Man, that was hilarious.
Anyways, I agree 100% with the HVGN, and I really wish that they'd give us Mother 1 and 3 as well as putting Mother 2 on the VC. Ah, it really is beyond horrible that the series has been neglected so much outside of Japan.
This review made me the most depressed I've ever been when watching a Happy Video Game Nerd video. After hearing about how original Earthbound was, it made me really think about how run-of-the-mill many of my game ideas are. At least that gave me the inspiration to come up with new, more ridiculous game ideas. Hopefully I'll be able to see a release to Robots riding dinosaurs Vs. Samurai Zombie Ninjas. (Working Title, and it' s just an idea)
I was born in 1996, and started playing games by 1999. I became a retro gamer thanks to virtual console on Wii, but when they hold off on letting me get games like this, it's kinda annoying.
How in HELL is this a not very known game?!? I keep finding literally HUNDREDS of people who talk only about it! I was left with the overall impression (not from the video) that this is a cult classic which everyone knew about and loved.
I had never played this before. Sure, I knew of its existence from magazines many moons ago, but living in the PAL territories and not really savouring the import scene, I never played it.

Earthbound is one of those games I didn't grow up with but wish I had some nostalgic attachment to, besides Ness in Smash Bros. If I don't see it on Virtual Console, I will buy an SNES.
I long for rpg and action adventures that take place in modern times. Admittedly I like swords, I'll take a sword over a gun anyday. But it's always a medieval sword, I long for something Zelda-like where I use a katana.

Not only do you automatically win against weak foes, but they actually had the sense to try and run away before battle when you were stronger. That's a feature I sorely missed when playing FF12.

I think EarthBound is getting a tiny bit too much credit here. Sweet Home was an RPG that took place in modern times and it had a horror style to it. It was released only a few months after Mother 1 and it paved the way for the survival horror genre. Also, the heroes were kids in Final Fantasy 3. Saying that EarthBound is better than most RPGs because of its setting and style isn't a good argument.

I might be in the minority here...BUT..I didn't overly care for Earthbound. I didn't think it was horrible..it was a decent game. It just wasn't one of my favorites...I played it for an hour or two and just wasn't interested enough to continue.

He forgot to mention how insanely high Earthbound Snes cartridges sell for online. I just bought one a few days ago and it cost me 95 bucks for JUST the cartridge. And... i got a GOOD deal.

Awesome review, but Derek is forgetting one game that came out at around the same time which rivaled, and in a couple of ways, was even better than Earthbound. That game in Chrono Trigger. Don't get me wrong, I love both games, but when compared side to side, Chrono Trigger just barely beats Earthbound.

I agree. Replay value is something that RPGs MUST have, and IMO, Earthbound does not have it. Same stuff happens with the same players. I honestly believe that Derek was being as fanboyish in Earthbound as he was with Mega Man 9 (although in a GOOD way). Final Fantasy 1, Dragon Quest/Warrior 3, Chrono Trigger all have much better higher replay values than Earthbound, and IMO are better for that reason.

@bigjew899 Earthbound is a game you can play once, but take a long time to play. The Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest/Warrior games were made with replay value in mind. Chrono Trigger is probably the best RPG in terms of replay value seeing as you can unlock about 10 different endings.

@bigjew899 I Disagree with you on FF1 i really dont get to much into the Hype of it, it really isnt that great of a game when push comes to shove, same with Chrono Trigger it really isn the BEST rpg ever, that goes to Illusion of Gaia (in my opinion)

You go and try to justify their not releasing Mother 3, and then mention Lucas in Brawl? Are you an idiot? Lucas in Brawl wasn't "keeping the legacy alive", it was "slapping American gamers across the face with a dick". Repeatedly. And then switching to a sledgehammer for the soundtrack release.
Also, Dcarlc97, I'm 99% certain that "Console Classixs" place is illegal, so you might as well just grab the ROM from the usual sources for free.

Soo... why didn't Nintendo just made a port of Mother 3 for the DS? I mean, it's not 'cause of the graphics, look at the Pokemon games for the DS, they sure don't look that diferent compared to the GBA games. (Sorry if I have bad English >.<) Oh and great video by the way =)

I think Nintendo is afraid of another total failure of the release for earthbound why is that well your saying that Earthbound has so many fans what could go wrong right... well Nintendo already had a fool proof plan when they first marketed Earthbound(big box,SG, etc.) and sales sunk.I think Earthbound should be Completely Remade(Same Game, nice new 3D graphics,maybe even online play:D) in Wii Ware starting off as a playable demo. Please nintendo now is the time for EarthBound to return...

@RivalryZ Well, there's the whole "A lot of the music of the music for Earthbound is based on existing music" thing that could open up a whole can of worms for Nintendo that they don't want to open. Apart from that, if they marketed it properly and completely redid it like graphics wise, it'd work.

One thing does need to be said about your reasoning for not releasing Mother 3...The famed Pheonix Wright series was in the same boat. The extremely popular DS games we love were originally GBA games in Japan. There's no reason to not translate and up-port. I don't think most PW fans even realize they're playing a GBA era game.

You are right about Earthbound. But apparently it doesn't have a good chance to come out on VC because of how the soundtrack is heavily sampled from music around that time. When the starmen.net guys visited Nintendo of America, they actually were excited to see the fan translation of Mother 3. Hardcore fans should check out the Earthbound Anthology.

HVGN, there's no doubt that is your best review. I really like AVGN instead of you, but you are much better than Irate Gamer (it sucks). I love RPG games from snes and never have played Earthbound, but your video inspired me so much and i desperate to try this game, its so fuck awesome! I remember when my brother begged my mom for this game because of how cool the box looked. I tried to convince him that it wasn't worth it but my mom gave in to his begging and bought it. Earthbound became my all time favorite game. I feel very very stupid for telling my brother to not buy it.

New gamers should experience this unique RPG series and wonder why Ness and Lucas were in Brawl.
Marth had not debuted in Smash Bros. along with other game characters who debuted in a crossover game before their core franchise were exported into this country. A case with Europeans with Ness and worldwide with Lucas.
Keep those tapes circulated for nostalgia.

I'm also ecstatic that they've finally released a DS remake of Dragon Quest V and are going to release VI. I'm already a proud owner of the former as well as the newest DQIX. Can't wait for DQX on the Wii but as far as I know there hasn't been any news on that in a year. :(

This is a great review of one of the greats of video game history. I've always loved Earthbound and had no idea the rest of the series had fan translations.
Dragon Warrior (Quest) I-IV were my first ever video game RPGs. My whole family loved and played them for a long time. My parents sold the cartridges on eBay back when eBay was a totally new entity. Kind of sad. But I don't think they're as rare as you say in this video.

The most hilarious part of this was that he made fun of the name Poo, then he renamed him Butts. Man, that was hilarious.
Anyways, I agree 100% with the HVGN, and I really wish that they'd give us Mother 1 and 3 as well as putting Mother 2 on the VC. Ah, it really is beyond horrible that the series has been neglected so much outside of Japan.

This review made me the most depressed I've ever been when watching a Happy Video Game Nerd video. After hearing about how original Earthbound was, it made me really think about how run-of-the-mill many of my game ideas are. At least that gave me the inspiration to come up with new, more ridiculous game ideas. Hopefully I'll be able to see a release to Robots riding dinosaurs Vs. Samurai Zombie Ninjas. (Working Title, and it' s just an idea)

I had never played this before. Sure, I knew of its existence from magazines many moons ago, but living in the PAL territories and not really savouring the import scene, I never played it.

Earthbound is one of those games I didn't grow up with but wish I had some nostalgic attachment to, besides Ness in Smash Bros. If I don't see it on Virtual Console, I will buy an SNES.
I long for rpg and action adventures that take place in modern times. Admittedly I like swords, I'll take a sword over a gun anyday. But it's always a medieval sword, I long for something Zelda-like where I use a katana.
