When you don't serve God, your mind is closed to the truth because of the darkness that is in you. This darkness leads to confusion, mistrust, sin and eventually death. That's the way Satan works and you are part of his agenda--another person he wants to destroy. And as long as he can keep you from committing to Christ, he will be able to accomplish what he intends. He governs with fear. Look around. See the truth and love God. Jesus will save you if you really want salvation.

That's a great question. It's not that God wants or needs your money but he does want to see that you don't put money above Him. The Bible says that true religion is about feeding the hungry and taking care of widows and orphans. A good church collects money and does those things. After Katrina, churches from all over helped so much that many have commented that those people would have been doomed if not for the Christians. Plus, keeping the lights on in God's hospital (the church) is needful.
You say, even if it hurts, stay open-minded. Your assumption is that I wasn't. I sought the truth for 10 years as an adult before finally coming to Christ. That's when I did find my purpose. I don't have to wander the world anymore searching for it. Finally, I found Someone worth devoting my life to. College didn't indoctrinate me into what I believe, although the atheistic professors there tried. People who don't know their own purpose and reject Christ miss out on so much. I challenge you!
To be honest, I've believed in Christianity and Jesus myself for about 10 or so years too. I've tried praying, I've heard the Jehovah's witnesses be wrong about their predictions over 100 times. Now i realize, there are too many religions, praying does nothing for me, and if God/Jesus truly loves us, why is he still allowing crime, war, famine, destruction, violence, disease and death?
From listening to Catholics say "If you lie/have an abortion/get divorced you will go to hell." They say "Astrology, tarot cards or even questioning the government is 'WRONG, DARK SIDED, BLASPHEMOUS, HELL SEEKING'! Can you see now how devastating and prisoning religion really is to the human psyche? To my knowledge, religion was created only for profit and control, to mislead people from what is really happening. Most likely, we're being given the wrong impression of what God truly is.
Religion drains people of so much money. What would God/Jesus want with money?
You have to take all this on board, even though you may already have and I could be wrong.
But in a world so corrupt as this we have to listen to absolutely everyone and every theory, and NEVER devote our lives to anything, it's for our own good.
You see, religion is not about what you can't do but about being free from the things Satan imprisons your flesh with. Look at men who can't get enough of porn or women hooked on crack and selling their bodies. Those people are not free. Religion hasn't done this to them. It was when Jesus freed me from the burden of sin that I was actually able to begin living my life in a non-destructive way. The Bible says that Jesus is the light of the world and that Satan is out to kill, steal and destroy.
Don't get too comfortable in your beliefs! Even if it hurts, stay open minded and question everything, from school, governments, religion, science, etc, until you can definitely confirm the actual truth of reality, because then you will be able to move on and learn about who and what you truly are as a being and what your purpose is in reality.
Otherwise, if you totally devote your life to just one thing, say, Jesus, who may not have even existed, you will spend a lifetime of learning nonsense.
