It is said that the mother "disappeared" after this event, she was never found, hence why the girl had lived with her father until 16. When she gets back to the house, she sees and talks to her mother's ghost. It's her ghost there, not "her" if you know what mean.
Her mother had always been there to protect her, because the ghost would be after her daughter.
Maybe a dolphin or a whale ate her since they kill them for fun :/
