My wife said he would say hi to them on Hockey Night in Canada by undoing and redoing his zipper on the neck of his linesman jersey. He is on Youtube a lot separating fights, his career was about 1959 to 1978. Funniest one is Atlanta vs. Flyers in about '74, he is even in the bench separating 2 guys, but I think he takes more punches to the noggin than the players. He is a cool guy to say that I am related to.
Linesman #8 is Neil Armstrong, my wife's uncle. Born in Camlachie,Ontario and grew up in Galt. Was a linesman at the old Shade St. arena before going onto a hockey hall of fame career as the linesman with the most consecutive games called. Was a scout for the Montreal Canadians, winning 2 cup rings with them in '86 and '93. Lives in Sarnia, son now GM of St. Louis Blues. Called the spider because of his lanky frame when separating fighters. Has a lot of stories about the old days.
This was a Wednesday game during the regular-season, so it wasn't seen on CBC.
I believe Canada's other English-language TV network at the time, CTV, began Wednesday-night regular-season NHL games in the Fall of 1965, so this was probably shown live on that network.
The hockey was better back then, but the refs sucked...now the refs let them fight, but all the videos I've seen of the 60's and 70's the refs jump in there and pull them apart before anything really happens.
Look at these tough motherfuckers! You know they didn't have all the training staff like todays guys. These tough ass MOFOs probably had nuthin but an ice pack waitin for them. I am so happy to see all of this classic hockey footage on youtube. Old hockey rocks. The new NHL is good, but I love the old fights.
@rockdCasbah Yeah, "he" won the Stanley Cup 5 times! I guess "he" would have won those 5 championships if he had been a member of the Boston Bruins or the New York Rangers. Right? You sure know how to construct a weak argument!
@rockdCasbah Best enforcer ever in the history of the game. Averaged 22 goals a season if you adjust for 80 games. Some people don't know squat about hockey, is all
Baun=bad hair.

@Eddieshack67 Yeah, Ferguson was sure tough when he fought smaller guys. He was a one dimensional goon.

classic from the past. Ferguson was the champ back then, but i wouldn't count Baun out. he was pretty solid.

Looks like the refs jumped in quick to save Bond otherwise he would have been kissing ice.

It looked like Ferguson didn't even start the fight, he was just holding on to Baun. Cant blame him there.

Big John was one tough SOB. Plus, how great it is to see no helmets. I hate the helmets when fights break out, take em off and get to it.

I guess even then the refs stopped fighting. Must have been Kevin Collins' daddy.
