@Rattenhoofd Segovia was a mediocre player, if you compare him to Ida Presti or Alexandre Lagoya for example or to Rey de la Torre, or Agustin Barrios, not to speak of today's players. Segovia didn't appreciate jazz or flamenco, because he was too arrogant. In the modern guitar world his importance would be like ZERO. I am able to improvise jazz and to play classical music on guitar, so i have the right to write my opinion.

This is Segovia in his prime. His playing and sound are so great that even the primitive recording technology can´t varnish his brilliance. The Hauser, it appears, was a far better instrument than the latter Ramirez´ he used.

Each generation of guitarists is getting better and better because the number of really fine teachers has grown signifigantly because of the visibility and respect that segovia gave to the classical guitar. We owe a great deal to Segovia whether or not we realize it.

I think that we can agree that Segovia's technique is not technically startling like someone like the Assad's or Denis Azabagic, but Segovia's Legacy and importance is not about his technique. Segovia is a revered figure because of what he did for the classical guitar by elevating it's status and establishing a widespred serious pedagogical tradition for the instrument.

I am with smith on this one in fact I got to take it even further and say that I personally don't think this guy is all he is cracked up to be, i have seen much better classical guitarists who are unknown play way better than him, I think its really ppl just like to say his name because its cool sounding and rolls off the tung easy. The refinement of a great artist is in details that are not readily apparent to the average person. Listen carefully to how long the low (E) string rings every time he plays it. It rings as long as he wants it to ring and no longer, because he then mutes it with a rest stroke of the right thumb which is not seen. Likewise, every note he plays, every note does exactly as he wants it to do. This is the refinement that makes for great artistry, after the obvious things are accomplished.

Plus, notice how he plays around with the tempo as the spirit moves him. He's not constrained by purely technique. It's the Soul! The Soul plays the guitar.

Technique is great, but Soul is better. It's good to have both, and Maestro Segovia had plenty of both.
