  • Awesome

     Double Bass skills

  • INCREDIBLE! Sending double bass player love

  • sick sick sick sick sick sicks sick....ad nauseum, pun intended...i love you SC

  • I play bass and basically don't like the stand up, .. unless Stanley is playing it.

  • Holy Fuck!!! Amazing!!!

  • oh my god.

  • I have been trying to do this stuff for so long, and I suddenly know why.

    This is pure unadulterated genius.

  • that solo is too sic

  • nah

  • What are you going to say, when its Stanley Clarke you can do anything. Hes invented or been at the very beginning of revolutionizing the entire instrument. His firstsolo album in 1973...... Children Forever.

  • beautiful performance! every note is clear! thank you!!!

  • upright shouldnt be slapped its doesnt come out real good i know people are gonna thumb me down cause oh its stanley he cant do no wroung what ever

  • IT'S STANLEY MAN, HE CAN'T DO NO WRONG!!!! LOL.. I agree partially with what your saying about the slapping, but either way, he is pretty amazing :)

  • No its not thats it's stanley, i personally love the way it sounds, i wish i could do it, and don't try to limit the upright bass like that.

  • why shouldn't an upright be slapped?

the slap on the strings is a nice high contrast with the low sound of the bass.

i love it, when the bass doesn't play just the bassline.

in this example the bass becomes a drum too.

    there aren't many multi-instruments...

he really explores the limits of the instrument,

respect (and not because it's stanley, 'cause there are more musicians like him).

  • what the fuck are you talking about? slapping sounds way better on a stand-up bass than it does on an electric piece of shit

  • pushing boundries on an instrument is what innovators are all about. thats what they do.

  • and also, rockabilly there wasn't even drums, just percussive noises made on the upright.

  • pretty wild. what is he using, roundwounds on the upright?

  • We all love kitsch ! ! Give us more kitsch Stanley !

  • Would that be a mushroom kitsch or kitsch Lorraine. And do you want the side of salad?

  • Nah . . . A radio that plays the same tune over and over will do.

  • I was thinking monotony would be more your style

  • quick, get that bass the number to the rape crisis hotline!!!

  • Wow.He is amazing.

  • Does anyone know how I can have a sex change and then have this guy's baby?!

  • You're a freak

  • That's my name, don't wear it out!

  • OK, at least you admitted it.

  • I'm nine weeks pregnant! I am so blessed!

  • WAOOOOO!!!

  • I've seen him live two days ago. He's amazing.

  • fuck balls this is sweet

  • Basically, what he has done is to deconstruct the bass down to the molecular level and then rebuild it using 4 dimensional harmolodic logic streams relying on subharmonic partials based on underlying funk/fusion continuum assumptions. Other than that, its actually quite simple....RIGHT! SC Killeded that!! Flawless, Innovative, Bold!!!

  • You Rock Stanley. Omg,.. i never heard anything like it...

  • yeah!!! In Tribute, Always!!!!

LIL STEVIE "STATIC MAJOR" from the group PLAYA!!!!!! I'll keep it rockin' in the North, and you keep it rockin' in da Souf!

  • Wow, slapping an aacoustic bass... well! I'm impressed.

  • Well he could have slapped an aardvark instead, I guess. But it would not have sounded so cool alongside the other music.

  • Aardvark? Cool! Hahaha...

  • This either make you want to practice none stop, or burn your bass. LOL

  • Unbelievable.

  • Saw him in N.Y.- w/ J.L. PONTY AND BELA FLECK IN 2004, UNREAL STUFF.JUST THE THREE OF THEM...

  • every time i hear him i cant believe it. he kicks large amounts of ass.

  • You have officially seen every (non arco) thing that can physically be done on the acoustic bass.

  • crazy good man!

  • this piece is called "Touch"

  • inhuman!!!!!

  • WOW!

  • that's fucking great....

i've seen him live this year at Palaca theatre,Greece and i was amazed...

could someone please tell me what is the name of the song that he starts playing at 4.07 and after?(sorry for my english)

plz answer me because i've been searching for that song for more than 3 years...

    thx!

  • "I'M A MAN" Thats spelled M....A....N(heh). It's a Blues classic, try Muddy Water's version.

  • YOU SON OF A....!!!

    5 STARS!

  • This is a song called "Africa" that Stanley wrote and performs. I love it.

  • Oh my F%$#ing God. I'm a bass player who lives in Toronto and was at this show and it really cooked. Each of the three members of this band did a great solo, but when Stanley did his, everyone turned upside down. I've never seen so many cougars go compleatly bananas; but it was with good reason, Stanley Clarke is the professor of the bass. Nuff said.

  • YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES

  • My hero, plain and simple.

  • your a hater....he could play upside down..and you still couldn't touch his playing

  • This is not a reply, merely a statement. Everyone needs to get a copy of Return To Forever's Romantic Warrior. Listen to it all the way through. Then argue that Stanley, Al, Lenny and Chic are not the best freakin' jazz musicians on the planet. AND they can do the same thing live, because I've seen it with my own 2 eyes!!

  • you've got my vote! :)

It was an amazing album when it was new, and it has stood the test of time.

Each musician is better than the next, and when they play together, it is as though... as though the gods have come down to bless us all :D

  • Romantic Warrior tells a story without ever saying a word. Duel of the Jester and the Tyrant is one of the greatest compostions of all time. I was fortunate enough to jam with Stanley at the Granada theater in Dallas. To this day, it was one of the highlights in my nearly 40 years of playing. Wooten, Hellborg,Mingus,Pastorius,(Flea??)All great, but give me Stanley in an all-star lineup everytime.

  • yes, I would include Flea as well. He is amazing to watch and I love to listen to him. I would like to see him do some solo work. I think it could be interesting.

I can't imagine actually getting to play with someone as awesome as Stanley Clarke!!! I got to see him on the School Days tour. He had such pure joy on his face while he played. He stayed around after the show and talked to the people who were hanging around, and a kind of improv sort of thing happened. It was seriously cool.

  • Fleas a freak! To play so good AND run about the stage in weird contortions beyond me. I played mostly in rock bands(chicks)in 70-'80's, but SC was a huge influence. He was playing at the Granada. Me and some other local guys got to jam. He smiled when I broke into Lopsy Lu and School Days. God, his rig sounded SO good on stage. My 5-10 minutes seemed like an eternity. Hellborg is another phenom bassist. Never jammed with him, but we drank Heineken's and ate onion rings backstage.

  • Yes i'm tired of his random slapping all around the fretboard clicking tantrums he likes to throw into his solos, but other than that this is an awesome video.

  • nice !

  • Damn what can u say that hasnt already been said about stanley a true master ..and at the end where he is doing the blues riff tnen makes that upright sound like a resonater , hell yeah

  • Spanish :O!!!!

    Genius

  • boy some people are just full of crap this is just friggin fantastic stuff stanley is the king i don't see anybody playing an upright like this. All you non playing dip shits shut the f**k up if you can't do any better.

  • ditto. the clip probanly has more clicking than actual playing.Though there aren't many people that play an actual bass. a lot of people just play the "Bass guitar"

  • My only gripe with Stanley is his upright playing.

His action is so rediculously low it doesn't even sound like a damn upright. Lots of people could play that shit if their bass was set up like his.

    (only gripe)

  • Okay ljazzyourface, let's see YOUR video!

  • heh, damn straight!

  • yeah, the clicking does get annoying.

  • jazzinyourface..will you pls think before u say stupid stuff? thank you.

  • he's got nothing on Frank Danunzio HA!

  • hes a pioneer and a showman,a legend and an important bass player in terms of what hes done for the instrument.

you cant compare people like Clarke. You accept there "sound" and enjoy what they bring to music.ideally wihtout being anal.

  • Awesome. Most definitely ranks among the most technically proficient bassists in the world. And they are: . Victor Wooten . Michael Manring . John Patitucci . Stuart Hamm . Tony Levin . Stanley Clarke . Dave LaRue . Billy Sheehan . Gary Willis
  • Tony Levin and Stanley should be at the top. And where are the old masters like Ron Carter? And Anthony Jackson and Alphonso Johnson are WAY better than Stuarty freakin' Hamm...hahahaha...

  • Sorry...that was WAY before I really knew the bass players. Now, that I am a Youtube "meister" and have seen so many bass videos, I've got a huge change of heart.

    My top five are:

    Bill Dickens

    Victor Wooten

    Michael Manring

    Jonas Hellborg

    John Patitucci

Beyond that is difficult, cause good bassists are generally skilled

  • I'm glad you put Hellborg in that lineup. I saw him 20 years ago with John Maclaughlin and Trilok Gurtu, and he blew me away. But Stanley belongs in the top 5 (with me it's the top 2). He is the King of jazz bass, and has influenced so many others including myself.

  • Stu Hamm is nothing compared to a lot of bassists

  • wow

  • after watching this. I have an 51 Kay for sale.

  • After watching this I think I'm going to sell my upright. I have an 51 Kay.

  • Well,pretty good. :D

  • AMAZING

  • wow amazing

  • i love stanley, best bassist in my opinion, but it is true that he sometimes sacrifices a good groove in order to show off. but then again, who wouldn't?

  • Saw the man do it in Holland couple a years ago.It was nearly the same solo and it was pretty impressive to witness.I agree it sometimes is more show than music but hey, if anyone has the right to get away with that it's him. Nowadays I see many young bassplayers schredding right from the start-and I aprecciate their technical skills-but Stanley did some amazing musical ART over the past 35(!!!! who can say that??) years. Stan is still the Man !!

  • marvellous! im amazed! there is only the double bass being played in the whole piece rite..sounds like even got percussion at some parts..

  • Absolutly Astonishing!

  • OMG!!!!!!

  • his tone on the G string sounds like a fretless banjo when he does the vibrado, but his clean tone on an upright is sick

  • I didn't think it was possible to play an upright like that...truly amazing.

  • BEAUTIFUL!

    thank you so much! :)

  • never seen anything like it before truly amazing

  • But the thing is, now I saw the whole vid, that it sometimes annoys me that he is just showing off virtuosity and that his real strength is the sensible tone he is able to produce. Not just him but a lot of bassplayers suffer from this disease.

  • yep, Stanley is at his best at the upright.

Listen to his " spanish phases for strings and bass "( 'album Stanley Clarke')

  • intense

  • One of the most amazing things I ever saw on an upright.
