@Fanik10 - a much BETTER line up than the crap we have today. wow... TWO black sitcoms back to back on NBC.. nice to see that on a popular network like NBC.
@neetrab all the more reason to stay home Saturday Nights with the fam and watch these shows. You got your Ice Cream or your Popcorn and enjoyed these shows.
@Fanik10 Probably the greatest sitcom lineup of all time. I mean who can pull off showing 4 sitcoms on a Saturday night and all the shows get great ratings. Makes you wonder what happened to NBC.
And yes, Vanessa Bell Armstrong beat out Aretha Franklin and Patti Labelle in singing this intro. They didn't get the role and SHE did! She really SAAAANG this song. I think we ALL know that.
@martingb66 - you are so welcome. I just started watching the series again and laugh so hard I start crying. The quality of the acting and the writing is so superior to most things I've ever seen produced on TV. What do you think? Remember the one where Thelma thought her cooking had killed the hamster and everyone got their stomachs pumped? How about the one where the rich widow was trying to get with the minister. Man. Those words of integrity and of encouragement and love- rare!
The singer is gospel GREAT Tramaine Hawkins! If you think THIS one's good, check her on "Going Up Yonder!" This woman brings da church outta ya fa sho!
@TheJoey1978 well to refresh your mind okay remeber family matters the grandmother from there play in this one... theres uncle phil from fresh prince, if you seen the wayne brothers the black cop she is the daughter in this show to the man coming out of the car
thats about all i can really give you to know whos who the rest you just gots to see a show of it on youtube many are around few are watch lol

Oh yes, back when t.v. wasn't drenched with only cop/detective shows, legal shows, and medical shows. Man, this was a great show. Sherman Hemsley is really a true genius.
@Godskid2009 LOL...THAT CHURCH IS ON 41ST AND SPRING GARDEN ST IN WEST PHILLY.....IF YOU CHECK GOOGLE MAPS YOU SHOULD SEE IT...ITS CALLED MT PISCAH??? I THINK
I remember watching this show and my friends always go to the school cafeteria with their brown bag sack lunches and they eat their lunches in the cafeteria.
I love this song. The best part of this clip is when the Deacon stops to jump rope with the kids and somehow he is jumping to the beat of the music. I get a little excited on the inside when I see that that. Jumping to gospel music just gets me excited. I think I will buy some old school gospel music I can jump to. Who? The only one I can think of right now is James Cleveland's somthing's got a hold of Me. You remember? When the song picks up the beat?
@don312000 ... and then.... he continues with that step as he walks quickly through the sanctuary. This opening is almost always the most entertaining part of the show.
@karolynruffin1 I agree when Sherman Hensley started to jump rope that was cool,I cant stop laughing when I see that and when he struts down the aisle in the church haha.
@karolynruffin1 NO Damn way.sorry.You took the words right out of my mouth.
Dont mean to curse on a clip like this but you wouldnt believe I feel the same exact way.I use to strut around the house just trying to keep up with the beat.....until I ran out of space. (This is making me smile thinking about it so I know somebody out there is laughing)
I used to watch this show with my sisters when I was a kid. Whenever the them song came on, we would dace sa if we had the "Holy Ghost'. Great memories gowing up in the 80s..I'm an 80s kid all the way.

@GunbladeRevolver - "...she went to TOWN on this opening song especially near the end "I need you Everyday, of Every hour..." ------ Hi, I thought she said, "I KNEEL everyday, every hour, I can't make it without you..." LOL! I really think that's what she said..
@MissRoyalDoll This show used to be on NBC on Wednesday night if my memory serves me right. I'm pushing 33 but it's funny the stuff I can remember. Heck I found Season 1 of Punky Brewster at Wal-Mart for $5.00 which was one of my favorite shows. I certainly miss better days past. Life was a whole lot different.

Amen was another great show of those days. Me and my grandma would sit on the sofa at her house when i was around 9 or 10 back then & watch it. Patti Labelle and Aretha Franklin were slated to do the lead for this, but Andre Crouch who wrote the song recommended Vanessa Bell Armstrong, and she beat both Patti and Aretha for the lead..........
Think of what would happen if a TV show from today tried to use the Lord's name in the theme song. I shudder to think of the consequences from the ACLU.

The 80s for most of you was a time of youth so its natural to see through rose tinted glasses in reality though 2009 is probably the greatest time in human history you have longer better health, numerous educational options,a more connected world through the net and other technologys and a far better overall standard of living.
There's certainly a certain element to the fact that everyone tends to cherish their own youth more; but nontheless I say it was a better time.
At least kids still had their innocents then, and quality was still the standard in entertainment. Things were still being created instead of like now just being rehashed.
Now kids from day one grow up on a huge dose of rated R movies, bitches and hoes music, and watered down, assembly line, and CGI stuffed music and entertainment...
not to mention internet porn of the most demented kind.
They're so jaded from the get go!
It's all about what you cherish.
Yeah, we're more electronically connected; but so what? All this connectivity; yet, war, famine, and genocide haven't subsided and inch; and people walk over someone laying on a convince store floor dying. There's hardly any community about us. So how much is it really worth?
Watching my niece and nephew growing up now and the crap they watch on TV I get real worried - in my day mid 80's growing up as a child things were so different and kids knew their place. Not like today. I'd hate to have kids today (so many issues they face from such an early age)
yeah but entertainment sucks the big one. Music blows tv sucks movies suck. We're in a pointless war. There's so much stupid pointless technology. There's been not one great technological discovery. This decade is the worst, it has absolutely no identity.
@xxdrew333xxx So true. I can't name one thing great about the past decade except technological advancement. At least we can watch all the old shows and listen to old music with the click of the mouse.
Brings Tears to my eyes... I love the opening to this show. This reminds me when times were good, back in the 80's.... oh how i wish i could go back in time.
Like everyone else, I miss those Saturday night lineups also... I was young so thats what I had to look forward to the night before going to church... All of those are great shows...!!! I loved "Amen"...!!!
Oh, I'm just looking over tomorrow's sermon. Promuscuity, the bullettrain to Satan!!

I used to love Amen! Great show! There are still some good shows out there, but very few.

Patti Labelle and Aretha Franklin were slated to do the lead for this, but Andre Crouch who wrote the song recommended Vanessa Bell Armstrong, and she beat both Patti and Aretha for the lead..........

Sherman Helmsley is a true gem. Genius. Underrated.

His name is NOT Sherman Helmsley. His name is George Jefferson. LOL

Think of what would happen if a TV show from today tried to use the Lord's name in the theme song. I shudder to think of the consequences from the ACLU.
wendys120 2 years ago
Yeah, I guess there was no ACLU in the 1980's, huh?
Idiot.

When my brother watched this intro, he'd do the jump rope thing just like Sherman Hemsley! We couldn't stop laughing at him when he did that.

The 80s for most of you was a time of youth so its natural to see through rose tinted glasses in reality though 2009 is probably the greatest time in human history you have longer better health, numerous educational options,a more connected world through the net and other technologys and a far better overall standard of living.
damieandark 2 years ago

Yobachi2007 2 years ago 5
Yobachi I so agree with you !!!

This decade is the worst, it has absolutely no identity.
xxdrew333xxx 2 years ago 3
@xxdrew333xxx So true. I can't name one thing great about the past decade except technological advancement. At least we can watch all the old shows and listen to old music with the click of the mouse.

I am not meaning this to sound disrespectful, but even though this show was made in the 80's and some of us remember it, doesn't make us a "ol head."
